New Reviews: Sade, Hot Chip, Yeasayer and MoreThe mysterious Sade returns after a 10-year hiatus with Soldier of Love, Sade Adu and her band’s first album since 2000’s Lovers Rock and only their second album in 18 years. Despite the lengthy break, Sade pick up where they left off on their latest album, delivering another set of sultry and beautiful R&B songs. On the amazing title track, “Sade’s voice, as slinky and smoky as ever, has that instantly recognizable ache,” Rob Sheffield writes in his three-and-a-half star review. “Beloved by all

M.I.A. Ends Retirement, T.I. Spits Surprise Set at Diesel PartyPhoto: Theo Wargo/WireImage On Saturday night, the grand finale of Diesel’s international 30th anniversary celebration brought M.I.A., Franz Ferdinand, T.I., N.E.R.D., Hot Chip and Chaka Khan together under one enormous, makeshift tent for a much-hyped Rock and Roll Circus. It was an event of unique collaborations and oddball extravagance, as 5,000 attendees flocked to Pier 3 at Brooklyn’s waterfront for free carnival food and roaming freak circus acts, including fire eaters and sword swallowers. Overhead acrobats, marching bands, monsoons of confetti and two DJ sets from Benji and Joel Madden kept the crowd entertained between performances. T.I. popped in for a surprise six-song set, and brought out M.I.A. to handle her sample on “Swagga Like Us.” Franz Ferdinand backed the MC on “Live Your Life” before the Scots delved into their own 40-minute set (the longest of the night). Earlier, Hot Chip performed three songs before turning into Chaka Khan’s band for three of her hits, including “I’m Every Woman.” Just after 1 a.m., M.I.A. ended her brief retirement, taking the stage in spandex and a short leather jacket that revealed her previously hidden pregnant stomach. She and Baltimore rapper Rye Rye ended the five-song set with crowd-favorite “Paper Planes” and an N.E.R.D. cameo. Pharrell repeated “Brooklyn, how do you feel?” and reminded the crowd, “We got to take advantage of this mothafuckin’ moment!” N.E.R.D. did just that, managing to work in a climactic 15-minute set before the party ended at 2 a.m.

Coachella Day Two: Mark Ronson, Cold War Kids, Hot Chip, Kate Nash and More “Things could be much worse,” sang Cold War Kids frontman Nathan Willett as a sizable hometown California crowd assembled in front of the main stage in the height of the Saturday heat, and he meant it. The band finished up “We Used to Vacation” with guitarist Jonnie Russell slapping a cymbal with a yellow maraca, tested out some new material and performed their stellar cover of “Hang Me Up to Dry,” with Willett breaking away from the mike to pound away at his keyboard. Meanwhile at the Gobi tent, Bonde de Role was stirring up a Brazilian dance party, dropping rhymes over the music from Grease’s “Summer Nights” and filling in for any language gaps with “bah bah bah”s and “chi chi cha”s. An hour later and a tent away, Kate Nash and a tight four-piece band wowed a massive crowd that ranged from teenage girls to muscle-bound men. Perched a keyboard decorated with a drape of red fabric, Nash gently tipped out of her chair with excitement, crooning witty tracks like her single “Foundations” in her endearing British accent and ending nearly every song with mini rave-ups that transformed her neat little tunes into something refreshing and wild. An even bigger (and more aggressive) crowd was busy cramming itself into the Sahara tent for British electro outfit Hot Chip. Despite the 100-degree temperatures, singer Alexis Taylor emerged in a shirt, tie and light-colored jacket to the sounds of “Shake a Fist,” as the group gave the song a clubby overhaul, packing the track with loopy keyboards. Crazed fans climbing the sides of the tent gyrated madly as the band delivered nearly an hour of melodic, smart dance music. At the exact same time, just a day after singer Serj Tankian performed a solo Coachella set, his System of a Down bandmates Daron Malakian (singer-guitarist) and John Dolmayan (drums) debuted their new band, Scars on Broadway. Few outside the obsessive SOAD fan co

Smoking Section: Kanye West, Linkin Park at the RS 40th Parties in Las Vegas It’s VMAs weekend in Las Vegas, but this Saturday was Rolling Stone day. Celebrating our 40th anniversary, we took over the Hard Rock Hotel for a slew of parties and performances that were simply off the hook. Starting things off yesterday was the inaugural Rolling Stone poker showdown. With over 150 entrants, first prize was more than $20,000, and vying for that big money was an odd cross-section of stars. Rapper Nelly had a solid chip-stack early on, but squandered it by the fifth round. “I wish I could just keep buying in,” Nelly told the Smoking Section in the elevator, afterwards. “Then I’d be here all night.” Elsewhere, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme hung on until the bitter end, and later informed the S.S. of his VMA duties. He will be playing bass on the Violent Femmes classic “Gone Daddy Gone” joined by his bandmate Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar), Dave Grohl (drums) and Gnarls Barkley frontman Cee-Lo. Josh was pleased to be infiltrating the awards ceremony, and might have even scored a short slot on the show with his other band, Eagles of Death Metal, whose bassist, Brian O’Connor, mercilessly knocked the S.S. out of the poker tourney. Also doing well at the tables was pop tart Ryan Cabrera — who, with his greasy hair pulled into a ponytail, his hat, and his white v-neck T-shirt, and his white skin, looked exactly like a Pepsi-era Michael Jackson. Not doing well was svengali dad Joe Simpson, as well as every member of the Swedish trio, Peter, Bjorn and John. Last night Tom DeLonge’s band Angels and Airwaves put on a hot set at the Hard Rock’s legendary swimming pool. Also under the stars, thousands of Linkin Park fans crammed into the hotel’s outdoor venue to see the band rip through Minutes To Midnight cuts like “What I’ve Done,” “Hands Held High” and, their best song ever, the epic “The Little Things Give You Away,” a stinging epic th

"Made in the Dark" by Hot ChipHot Chip's Made in the Dark is brimming with robot love, but it's far from being the work of slick automatons. On this, their third album, the British fivesome play sentimental, spastic robots. The record weaves (sometimes violently) from gorgeous, melancholic ballads into bursts of pleasure-principled electro-pop. The band have always juggled these two tendencies, but here the transitions are far more jarring than on either of their previous albums. Still, the individual parts are thrilling even if the whole doesn't quite gel. "We're Looking for a Lot of Love" strolls leisurely by with wistful whistles, clicking percussion and a pastel wash of key tones. "Touch to Much" is equally sweet, with its tinkling bells and a subdued kick. The highlights, though, are the really subdued numbers. On the "Wrestlers," woozy synths give way to a simple, understated piano melody, while Alexis Taylor sings, "I learned all I need to know I learned from wrestling" — baffling and charming at

Concert review: Hot Chip at the 9:30 clubHot Chip could be the MacGyver of electropop. Give them a maraca, a rubber band and a Swiss army knife, and the group will give you a dance-floor hit.
