Rob Sheffield Remembers Ultimate Indie Cult Hero Alex ChiltonPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty Classic Alex Chilton live moment: 1987, long after midnight, a sleazy rock bar in Roanoke, Virginia. When the man strikes up his best-loved song, the Big Star classic “September Gurls,” some drunk idiot celebrates by throwing a bottle that hits the guitar. Chilton cuts the song dead right at the syllable “Sep—” and snarls, “If I catch the motherfucker who threw that bottle, I’m gonna kill him.” Then, to the band: “OK, on D. One. Two.” They pick it up without m

Bootleg Watch: Elvis Costello Hits the Gas on “This Years Model”Starting this week, we’re going to be spotlighting our favorite bootlegs of the moment. No, we won’t be linking to them – we don’t want anybody to get sued on our account – but if you’re interested, begin here and here. Elvis Costello and the Attractions Winterland Ballroom, June 7th, 1978 By the time Elvis Costello and the Attractions hit San Francisco for this show in 1978, they had been on the road pretty much nonstop for a solid year and had only just begun to play large rooms such as Bill Graham’s famed Winterland Ballroom. Performing most of This Year’s Model – Costello’s first album with the Attractions, which had hit stores just a few weeks prior – the four-piece bashed away at a frantic pace they haven’t matched since. The songs rush by Ramones-style – there are barely any pauses between them except for Costello screaming out terse intros like, “This one’s called ‘Pump It Up!’.” This must be why all their early press called them a punk band. Highlights include a highly pressurized ‘Watching the Detectives” and a frenzied “Radio Radio,” during which Steve Nieve bangs on his organ with such force that the thing sounds like it’s on the verge of short-circuiting. International Report: Live Earth Sydney We asked Rolling Stone’s international editions to report on the Live Earth concerts nearest them. Here’s the report from Dan Lander of Rolling Stone Australia on Live Earth Sydney: WHO PLAYED: Wolfmother, Jack Johnson, Crowded House, Blue King Brown, Toni Collette, Sneaky Sound System, Ghostwriters, Paul Kelly, Eskimo Joe, Missy Higgins, John Butler Trio HIGHLIGHTS: • Crowded House joined by everybody on the bill for a sing-along version of “Weather With You”, a song which took on a new meaning under the circumstances. • An intense-as-hell drum solo from the John Butler Trio’s Michael Barker, the perfect foil to Butler’s equally intense demand to Australia’s leaders not to introduce nuclear energy as an answer to global warming (we have much better options). The JBT set was a standout overall – there is no one on the planet who sounds better at an outside gig than these guys. • Paul Kelly joined by Kev Carmody, Missy Higgins and John Butler for “From Little Things Big Things Grow”. The whole crowd sung along – all eleven verses. MOST UNEXPECTED MOMENT: Academy-Award nominated actress Toni Collette and her band the Finish closing their set with a very fitting cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution”, proving not every actor who tries their hand at music need be as bad as Russell Crowe.
