Although the British quintet was in the midst of enjoying its first taste of global success, original singer Paul Di'Anno abruptly quit in 1981. Though stunned, the young band wisely agreed to soldier on, making ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson their new frontman. Nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren," Dickinson's voice was to become one of the band's most prominent signature characteristics. It also didn't hurt that the band had composed some of its best songs ever, such as the haunting title song, and its first U.K. Top-10 single, "Run to the Hills." Other highlights include the sinister "Children of the Damned," the melodic "The Prisoner," and the album-closing epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

- Run to the shops

Well I can't say much more about this album than the other guys have already said, except to say that the negative reviews seem to be of a non-constructive nature all I can say guys is that all forms of art be it music or other forms all borrow and steal from other genres thats the way we evolve nuff said on that. NOTB did it for me when I was a kid and still does so now although I can't bang my head to it now as much as I could do .If you're curious about Maiden then buy this album but don't be fooled into thinking that the albums after 7th son are any good though there are a few shiners dotted around in the later albums. NOTB a classic would'nt you agree?

- Third times' a charm

This album introduced me to Iron Maiden. It's a delightful compilation of 9 tracks, including the Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills and what appears to be a not-so-well-known song entitled Invaders. This was the album in which Singer Bruce Dickinson made his entrance. Sadly, the band's smashing drummer, Clive Burr, split from Iron Maiden after this album.

I have been quite hooked on Maiden since. The guitars wailing their 1980 notes are just something a lot of kids these days don't like that much, which is sad, because Iron Maiden's music is a prime example of English Hard Rock. This album is so awesome, in fact, that it sent Iron Maiden for the first time (but certainly not last time) up into to the number 1 chart position, which is pretty cool as it was only their third album.

If you like Iron Maiden, hard rock and/or metal, punk-rock, or curious person looking for the music that suits your taste, or all of the above, I can't stress it to you how much you need this album. It's absolutely astounding and full of raw power!

- Iron Maiden at their best!

As the title states, this is Iron Maiden at their best. Each of the songs is good.

Invaders: Except for this one. This is the only song on the album I dislike. I hate the way "Invaders!" is said. 5/10

Children of the Damned: I do not know what this song is about, I think it may be bout someone important dying. This is definitely one of their best songs, slow epic vocals, but an intense speedy solo. 10/10

The Prisoner: Another excellent song, the chorus sounds great, but the rest is kinda samey. 8/10

22 Acacia Avenue: A song many like, but one I'm not particularly a fan of. I guess its just not for me. Its decent though. 7/10

The Number of the Beast: A great track indeed, this song is one of their most famous and is a staple in their live concerts, Number was controversial because parents believed it to be promoting satanism, their ignorance appalls me. They probably never even listened to the words. 10/10

Run to the Hills: A seriously overrated track. By no means bad, but just not as good as everyone thinks and says, at least in my opinion. 9/10

Gangland: A lesser track, I still enjoy this, but its not what I would choose to listen to. 6/10

Total Eclipse: When I first heard this song I wondered what album was it from, and too my surprise it was on Number. I apparently had a dated copy lacking this track. On the first listen It seemed average, but it grew on me. 8/10

Hallowed Be Thy Name: The epic finale, a powerful, deep epic track, about death, and the illusion of life. My favorite Iron Maiden song.

10/10

- VERY OVERRATED ALBUM!!!

Why people are always saying that this is the best Iron Maiden album? Let me say two things; the songs are heavy, fast, but...

some of them are quite simple (of course heavy metal talks about feeling, but I think there better albums which are more elaborated and tells the same)

Invaders; is an ok track, but there are some heavy metal songs like this. For example, 24 hours ago, from Savatage, is more original.

Children of the damned; reminds me a lot of Children of the sea, from Black Sabbath's Heaven and hell album. Again, there are many songs in this style.

The prisioner tries to be diferent, but simply I didn't like it so much.

22 Acacia Avenue; continues Charlot the harlot, and also my indifference.

The number of the beast and Run to the hills are considered Maiden clasics, but I don't like them, they don't tell me nothing

Gangland and Total Eclipse are two very dumb tracks, Total disapointment!!

The one which I really liked is Hallowed be thy name, GREAT track with lots of time changes. Bruce does it well!

After reading my review, some Maiden fans may hate me, but that's my opinion!. So, some metal listeners will love this, but if you like more sofhisticated and elaborated metal I recommend you to buy Powerslave, Somewhere in time or Seventh son of a seventh son. Also Piece of mind and Iron Maiden had some great tracks.
