Iron Maiden Live Out “Aces High” In Most Metal Jet Ever “Live to fly/fly to live” goes the chorus of “Aces High,” and Iron Maiden frontman/avid pilot Bruce Dickinson will continue living up to his mantra in 2008 as he transports his band and crew on the Eighties-dedicated “Somewhere Back in Time” world tour in this pimped-out custom 757. Speculation about whether the jet is equipped with a tailgun for air-dueling purposes was unconfirmed by press time. [Photo: Anthony J. Best]

Led Zeppelin: The Full Report From David Fricke For the second encore of their first full concert in twenty-seven years, at London’s 02 arena last night, Led Zeppelin tore into “Rock and Roll,” from their untitled fourth album, with a joyful vengeance. As drummer Jason Bonham hammered with the ghostly precision and ferocity of his late father, guitarist Jimmy Page fired dirty chunks of Chuck Berry and bassist John Paul Jones kept iron time with familiar reserve, singer Robert Plant sang the most obvious words of the night: “Been a long time since I rock and rolled.” Overhead, images of a much younger Zeppelin, in concert during the early and mid-Seventies, flashed on a huge digital-video screen. In those films, Led Zeppelin were the biggest, loudest and most cocksure band in rock. Jimmy Page’s now snow-white hair was still jet black; Robert Plant was a golden god, not yet a Viking elder, and the late John Bonham — whose death in 1980 abruptly ended Zeppelin’s reign — still ruled the engine room. But the band that played underneath those memories last night was not the one that misfired at Live Aid in 1985 or again in New York in 1988. This one was rehearsed, ready and out to kill. This band was Led Zeppelin in every way. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham the Younger opened their two-hour show with the confident wit and colossal nerve of “Good Times Bad Times,” the first song on Led Zeppelin’s 1969 debut album. Even before Plant opened his mouth, the original fury — a surprisingly lean, dub-like crossfire of cannonshot chords, frantic, gulping bass runs and polyrhythmic swagger — was in order and in force. “In the days of my youth/I was told what it means to be a man,” Plant sang, in the slightly lower register of someone who gives those lessons now. It was an appropriate effect, too — an admission of age delivered with feral pride — on a night dedicated to the memory of Zeppelin’s late friend and mentor, Atlantic Records’ co-founder

"Super Taranta!" by Gogol BordelloThe latest record from this New York-based but globally-minded gypsy-punk outfit will probably encounter listeners in two categories: those who already stalk the band, rabidly awaiting their next show; and those who are waiting to be converted or are simply on the fence. First, the good news for the uninitiated and the non-believers: Gogol Bordello play a volatile fusion of global sounds and their magpie vision is well-realized here. Eastern European melodies and thrashing punk riffs trade jabs with occasional touches of ska or dub, building into brilliantly crazed jams. For all the high-octane eclecticism, what immediately shines through is singer Eugene Hutz's pipes. He belts 'em out like a Russian Shane McGowan, drunk on vodka, jet lag and righteous indignation. The skinny on Gogol Bordello is that all their sonic madness is all the more, well, mad in concert. Those who've already been won over by their live gigs can take heart, Super Taranta! comes close to matching that

Michael Stipe Reveals R.E.M. Has Had “Tough Ten Years” On Friday, Michael Stipe appeared on Jane Pratt’s SIRIUS show Jane Radio and discussed R.E.M.’s well-hidden decade-year struggle to communicate with each other. (Don’t fear, R.E.M. die-hards: Stipe also chatted about how the band’s March album is bringing them closer than ever). “It’s been a really tough ten years for us,” Stipe revealed. “We were trying to keep a real brave face publicly, and kind of hold through it. But I have to say I think we finally found a place of communication. We’re talking to each other, we’ve written a bunch of great songs … I’ve got another four songs to present to the guys next week when we go back in the studio and one of those is really going to surprise them. I can’t wait to see them.” Stipe added that he’s using a high-tech songwriting trick he picked up from Bono. “I use the memo on my cell phone to [record lyrics and melodies]. … I love technology.” Not that the twenty-first century is all it was cracked up to be. “I thought we would all have jet packs, and clean energy, and the world would be a great place, and there would be no wars. That’s not really quite how it turned out,” he lamented. The singer also proclaimed himself an eternal optimist, praised Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild (for which Eddie Vedder provides the soundtrack), and said he was heading off to catch Interpol’s Madison Square Garden debut Friday night: “I love those guys so much.”

Coachella: New York to Cali…The Hipster Exodus BeginsFor this year’s Coachella, we’ve dispatched our very own indie rock star reporter, Ed Droste of Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear. Below is his first of many reports. THE AIRPORT 8:34 a.m.: I’m definitely feeling the effects of a few too many drinks from last night’s DNTEL record release party at Union Pool. I’m starving but will likely only get a bag of blue taro chips on our jet blue flight. Maybe I’ll watch HGTV and pass out in row 18A. I need to be ready for my schedule which, get this. I made with the “coachooser.” Festivals are clever, never let anyone tell you differently. 10:29 a.m.: Jetblue is so insanely quick and easy, and they have free net. I know I know, people were annoyed in February when some serious shit went down, but it’s so smooth I’ve had time to eat, browse the newstands, surf the web, etc. Did you know Katie is Divorcing Tom? Star says so. Also picked up the latest copy of RS (happy 40th) and enjoyed reading up on FEIST with whom we’ll be touring with in June. I wish she was playing Coachella, but I’ll have plenty of chances to see her perform. There’s some serious Coachella pilgrimage action going on around these parts — I’m making some assumptions naturally, but I don’t usually fly with a plane full of cute 20 somethings…hmmmm. I think I’ll eat some trail mix and take a Xanax. Don’t Miss Our Constant Coachella Coverage! Get the scoop from Brian Hiatt, Rob Sheffield and indie-rock star correspondent, Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear

Smoking Section: Fiona Apple, Kanye West, The Killers and Tom Petty On a perfect summer night in Manhattan, the Smoking Section hoofed it up to Central Park to check out our hero Fiona Apple, backed by bluegrass prodigies Nickel Creek. “They are such good musicians,” Apple told us. “And they have such a strong work ethic — I was hoping it would rub off on me.” Two of the Creekers — Sean and Sarah Watkins — regularly host a jam session, the Watkins Family Hour, at L.A. club Largo, where Apple has been known to sit in on ancient murder ballads like “Knoxville Girl.” “We have a lot of fun,” she says. Apple brought that exuberance with her on her fourteen-date run, singing and dancing and smiling (shocker!) through a review of her catalog, some Patsy Cline and other tasty nuggets. “I usually associate being onstage with turmoil and angst,” Apple says. “But onstage with them is like family fun time. My whole perspective has changed about the job. I kind of feel like, ‘Oh, this is where I belong.’ ” * * * * The S.S. jetted to London for this issue’s interview with Kanye West. After his set at the V Fest in Staffordshire, Kanye and the S.S. hopped in a Mercedes for a three-hour drive to the equally muddy V Fest in Chelmsford (check out West’s sneaker protection) to catch the Killers. “They’re my absolute favorite band,” said Kanye. Days later, in New York, we caught up with Brandon Flowers at Sears Sound. “Kanye is amazing,” a flattered Flowers responds. “I can’t wait to hear his new stuff.” In the studio we witnessed Flowers and Lou Reed put the finishing touches on a sick new tune called “Tranquilize,” which will be featured on Sawdust, the Killers’ compilation of outtakes, B sides, remixes and covers (like one of Dire Straits’ “Romeo and Juliet”), out in November. “I was a big fan of the Smiths’ Hatful of Hollow and Oasis’ The Masterplan, so
