This Week’s Reviews: John Mayer, G Unit, Alkaline Trio and Sebadoh John Mayer’s latest live album Where The Light Is: Live in Los Angeles leads the pack in this week’s RollingStone.com exclusive reviews for records hitting stores today. Mark Kemp writes, “Groupies will swoon over the opening five-song acoustic set of lightweight favorites like ‘Daughters,’ but it’s when Mayer trots out the power trio that his blues licks get red-hot, peaking with the squalling, ten-minute guitar workout ‘Out of My Mind.’” Click below for the Mayer album plus round-ups of new albums by G Unit, Alkaline Trio and Amos Lee plus a review of the reissue of Sebadoh’s Bubble and Scrape. • Review: John Mayer’s Where the Light Is: Live From Los Angeles • Review: G Unit’s T.O.S. The Complete John Mayer: Guitarist Delivers Acoustic, Blues-Rock and Latest Persona In One Marathon Show For his First Annual Holiday Charity Revue Saturday night in Los Angeles, John Mayer brought together the three phases of his career — the solo acoustic work, the blues-rock John Mayer Trio, and his current touring band — into one night. Mayer devoted one set to each format, quipping, “It’s a real honor to be opening for myself,” as he began the acoustic set. “I ran into myself backstage and I was very nice — and, I mean, I’m huge!” Mayer began with an acoustic version of the funky “Neon,” off his major-label debut Room for Squares. The half-hour set’s other high points were gorgeous versions of the rarely played “In Your Atmosphere” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” (which he had also performed at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in October) with the two guitarists from Mayer’s touring band. But it was clear from the moment that the John Mayer Trio stepped onstage that their performance, already the most anticipated of the night, would go down as the highlight. Looking dapper in matching black suits and skinny black ties, Mayer, Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino tore through an electric 55-minute set of covers (”Every Day I Have the Blues,” “Wait Until Tomorrow,” “Bold As Love”), originals (”Who Did You Think I Was,” “Out of My Mind,” “Come When I Call”) and tracks from Mayer’s Continuum that originated on the trio’s 2005-2006 tour (”Vultures,” “Good Love is On the Way”). Mayer seemed thrilled and completely at ease, and addressed the recent spike in his tabloid appearances, telling the audience “My problem is not that my hair isn’t done or that I’m on video late at night and not walking straight. The reason it bugs me is that it messes with my message of playing guitar and being creative, and my message of being grateful to all of

Talk of Jackson Family Tour, Led Zeppelin Single Poised for Chart Debut, Foo Fighters Announce Short Stack of 2008 Tour Dates The Atlanta-based promoter of R.Kelly and Chris Brown’s upcoming tour has revealed the possibility of a Jackson family tour for 2008. Leonard Rowe, who has been in the business since 1975, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution he flew to Las Vegas in April to discuss the idea with the Jacksons. Rowe said Michael didn’t shoot down the idea; he only nixed a 2007 tour because of the amount of preparation involved. No additional planning has been started. Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” will make its debut on the U.K. singles charts this week, thirty-six years after first appearing on Zep’s fourth album. The track hadn’t been released as a single until now, as a part of Zeppelin’s digitally remastered greatest-hits album, Mothership. Reports put “Stairway” currently at number fifty-six, but its position is expected to rise before the week is over. Rumors that Jon Bon Jovi is seeking political office in his home state of New Jersey have been greatly exaggerated. Speculation began after Bon Jovi hired former New York Mayor David Dinkins’ chief of staff as his publicist and maintained a residence in NJ. “His day job is going too well, and this way he can keep the house,” his rep said. John Mayer has announced a holiday charity show on December 8th at L.A.’s new Nokia Theatre. At the gig, Mayer will play a solo acoustic set, then one with the John Mayer Trio (also featuring Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino) and a third with his usual touring band. The Foo Fighters have confirmed a handful of 2008 tour dates in support of this year’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. Full list after the jump. Foo Fighters 2008 Tour Dates: January 23 - Dallas, TX - American Airlines Center January 25 - Memphis, TN - FedExForum January 26 - Nashville, TN - Municipal Auditorium February 18 - Worcester, MA - DCU Center February 21 - Philadelphia, PA - Wachovia Spectrum February 24 - Det

John Mayer Goes Legit Lit We've got to applaud John Mayer for trying different things without fear of failure or ridicule. Or, maybe he is concerned with those things but is just brazen enough to boldly go forward anyways. In addition to previously exploring a different sound with his "John Mayer Trio," the musician also had a wacky improv / reality show on VH1 and has recently been performing stand-up comedy. Now, Mayer is adding "author" to his expanding resume, and he just posted on his blog (on his official website)
