VMA LIVEBLOG: Spears And Loathing In Las VegasI woke up this morning at dawn, filled with a joyful anticipation reminiscent of Christmas morning and the moments prior to losing my virginity, for I knew that the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards - the single most important televised event of the night that isn't Curb Your Enthusiasm - would be ridin' and shinin' its way into my living room in only a few short hours. And now, at 8pm Eastern Times, the "Pre-Show Royale" is upon me, and I'm literally moments away from the shock and awe of Britney Spears' first attempt in years at performing something other than insanity. I've got a glass full of Bourbon, a big bag of Hot Wings & Blue Cheese Flavored "Dorito Collisions", and a masochistic need for some hot pop culture torture. Let's do this! 8:02 - Since when did Pete Wentz, the bassist, become the spokesman for Fall Out Boy. He's telling us about his uberhip moonlighting gig as a "DJ". When he wants to make the club "go off" he either plays Justin Timberlake or Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'". And there you have it: Journey is THE bangin' club band of the summer.

Presidential Candidates Aren’t Allowed To Have Guilty Pleasures On Their iPodsA "What's on Barack Obama's iPod" article? Come onnnnn, something embarrassing... Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod. "I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone. Growing up in the '70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tops his favorites from the band. Aw come on, dude -- Rolling Stones, Dylan, and Stevie Wonder? Where's the token guilty pleasure admission?? And not some fake "oh my God I'm sooo embarrassed" guilty pleasure like Journey or The Cars or the song "Since U Been Gone" or something everyone likes, I mean a real, soul-revealing, humanizing, clinch-the-music-nerd-vote-with-your-honesty guilty pleasure. Could you imagine if Obama was like, "I enjoy Earth Wind & Fire, Jay-Z, and you know what? I really feel like Billy Joel's River of Dreams album got a bad rap. I don't know, I just really kind of enjoy it." Or, "I've been listening 'Gimmie Shelter' a lot lately, but I've also been hooked on 'Long Way Down' by the Goo Goo Dolls, it came on my Shuffle last week and I was like 'whaaaat?' but it really took me back, I don't know, I kinda like it." I guess if we've learned anything from this article, we now know that Shuffling Toward the Weekend has disqualified all of us from running for president.

Is a Journey Concert Even a Concert Without Lead Singer Steve “The Mullet” Perry?Brace yourselves, music lovers: Three of history's best bands are uniting this summer for the kind of line-up that makes you want to strap synthesizers onto your arms and paraglide over a volcano hole. Because Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick will be spanning the country together for almost three straight months, in what can only be described as "The Perfect Line-Up". But before you schedule your mullet tune-up appointment, we must point out the heartbreaking news: Journey, a band we love so, so hard thanks to hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms", will not be complete. Because lead singer Steve Perry will not be reuniting with the band for the tour. Instead, those attending this summer line-up will be presented with the vocal stylings of Arnel Pineda, a Filipino vocalist who was (wait for it) discovered on Youtube. Now, we were all set to take a huge, angry blogdump all over this new guy, this "fake Steve Perry", arguing that a Journey Concert without Steve Perry is like going to a church that used to be an IHOP. Until we actually saw and heard the videos of Arnel singing!! He seriously sounds exactly like Steve Perry. Sure, Arnel may look sorta (exactly) like American Idol cast-off Danny Noriega... but maybe that's a good thing? Especially considering Steve Perry was once quoted as saying he "never really felt like part of the band." Watch this New Fake Steve Perry Arnel Pineda sing some tunes after the jump, and then help us decide whether or not to buy tickets to this show. Let's not forget Heart is also performing. They basically provided the soundtrack to the coming of age movie that was my late teens. So -- worth it? Watch the videos after the cut and judge away.
