Concert Review: Spoon at Center Stage - Atlanta, GAThere are many categories of success in the music industry. Some bands have the backing of a record label and are heavily marketed. Other bands garner a huge following of fans and ride that wave via word-of-mouth exposure to success. Spoon falls in the latter category. Formed in 1994 in Austin, Texas, vocalist/guitarist Britt Daniel along with drummer Jim Eno embarked on what would become a very long journey.[...] Read more!

"Mothership" by Led ZeppelinWhy release another Led Zeppelin best-of compilation? Well, one could argue that, far from losing its relevance, the seminal heavy metal band is more au courant than the army of acts they've inspired, despite only just now making its tunes available digitally. With songs about levees breaking, Kashmir, and Lord of the Rings co-mingling on two discs, Zep's prescience, coincidental or not, is on display. The 24 tracks included were selected by the surviving members, and span all eight studio albums. While there are inevitably some favorites missing, such as "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" or "Misty Mountain Hop," one feels both happily wrung out by the journey from "Good Times, Bad Times" to "All My Love" and desirous of more. Many who buy Mothership will recognize bits of these song—if they didn't know them already—from P. Diddy's samples, the third Shrek movie, and Chevrolet commercials, but now they'll finally be able to turn the volume up and let the

Neil Young’s Rough Ride: A Look Back at the Freedom of Speech Tour When Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tore into “Let’s Impeach the President” in Atlanta in August 2006, they faced an overwhelming chorus of boos and raised middle fingers. The band seemed calm onstage, but today Neil Young says he feared for his safety throughout the entire Freedom of Speech Tour. “I was a nervous wreck by the end of that thing,” he says. “We had to deal with death threats and bomb-sniffing dogs the whole time.” The Atlanta concert is a pivotal scene in CSNY Déjà Vu, a documentary chronicling the tour, directed by Bernard Shakey (a.k.a. Young), which premiered at Sundance. Click here for an interview with Young in which he discusses the documentary, the presidential election and his plans for the future. Slash’s Autobiography: Fun with Traci Lords, Weapons And Speedballs If Slash’s upcoming Slash: The Autobiography lives up to even half the potential of this excerpt, the former Guns N’ Roses and current Velvet Revolver guitarist may have penned the most lurid, filthiest rock memoir ever. We feel like we should go to rehab just from reading about Slash’s drug-stained memories of Guns N’ Roses as they prepared to journey into the dark abyss that resulted in Use Your Illusion I & II. It’s not all about drugs and Axl Rose’s unpredictable mood swings: Slash infuses this excerpt with hysterical vignettes about his life as a rocker in late-Eighties LA. For example, Slash secretly dated but was unable to bed famed porn star Traci Lords; ultimately, that relationship ended after Slash failed to come down from a two-day crack binge in time for a date with Lords. And that’s just one anecdote in a chapter chock full of every possible rock cliché you can think of. Groupies offering the entire band sexual favors? Got it. Slash asking the contractor who was working on his bathroom if he wants cocaine? Yep. Drummer Steven Adler secretly using the recording studio’s butter tray to disguise his vices? That’s there. This lone excerpt has it all, including Slash’s drug-fueled paranoid dash when he thought he was being chased by the Predator from the Schwarzenegger movie, which forced him to purchase an arsenal of weapons that even T.I. would deem excessive. One thing’s for certain: This autobiography will probably rock a whole lot louder than Chinese Democracy. Related Stories: More “Chinese” Water Torture: Guns N’ Roses Album Out in 2008? Zach de la Rocha Completes Solo LP, J.Lo Considers Spice Girls Collabo, iPhone Goes Overseas Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha has finally ended his Chinese Democracy-esque journey by revealing that his first solo album is finished. The record, which de la Rocha started after leaving Rage in 2000, will feature Zach playing keyboards and former Mars Volta member Jon Theodore on drums. A source close to the recordings called it a cross-pollination of “Led Zeppelin and Dr. Dre.” While no decision has been handed down yet, some reports claim Britney Spears will temporarily relinquish custody of her kids to ex-husband Kevin Federline following allegations that Spears’ former bodyguard would testify regarding drug use, and the voluntary exile of her lawyer and manager. In what would be a career move only slightly less devastating than Gigli, Jennifer Lopez has expressed interest in joining the Spice Girls onstage during their reunion tour after striking up a friendship with Posh Spice. Apple’s platinum-selling iPhone will make its U.K. debut on November 9th. The phone will be available exclusively on wireless carrier O2 and will cost a meager £269 ($540). The principal members of Shudder to Think reunited onstage last night at New York’s Mercury Lounge, marking the first time since 1999 that the Washington, D.C. band has played together live. The group performed six songs, including two tracks from 1994’s Pony Express Record.

T-Pain, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney Dominate Charts, Radiohead Nearly Done With Their New Album, And More Chart Roundup: T-Pain’s sophomore album Epiphany debuted atop this week’s Billboard charts with 171,000 copies sold. Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad came in at the #2 spot, selling 162,000 copies and edging Sir Paul McCartney’s Memory Almost Full by only 1,000 copies. If T-Pain and Rihanna outselling Paul McCartney proves anything, it’s that we need to open more Starbucks. Despite the debut-heavy top three, combined album sales were still down 8.3 percent compared to the same week last year. Best news ever: Radiohead are “nearly there” with “there” being the completion of the band’s new album. Only Lollapalooza would be cruel enough to schedule Regina Spektor, The Hold Steady, Roky Erickson, and CSS sets all at the same time on four different stages. Tony Soprano is not dead, according to Journey’s Steve Perry, who refused to let “Don’t Stop Believin’” soundtrack a Soprano family massacre. Watch Justin Timberlake’s new video for “Lovestoned,” which clocks in at a modest, un-“What Goes Around…”-like 4 minutes and 54 seconds. Shh… The White Stripes are supposedly playing a secret show in NYC at the venue formerly known as Irving Plaza (and now known as the Fillmore East) on June 19th. Photo: Getty

Cat Power Wins Shortlist Music Prize, Pete Doherty To Work With Disney, David Chase Explains Sopranos Finale (Sort Of) Cat Power is the greatest, according to those who decide who should win the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize. Chan Marshall beat out nine fellow nominees including Joanna Newsom, Girl Talk, Band of Horses, and Tom Waits. So what does she win? We’re assuming some sort of trophy, but also a promotion with the iTunes store that offers an exclusive track with purchase of the award-winning album. Members of the Shortlist Electoral College who honored Cat Power with this prize include Sufjan Stevens, Wayne Coyne, and Panic! At The Disco (nothing like the thrill of knowing the Panic! dudes think you rock). Pete Doherty is set to perform a song from Mary Poppins for a Disney tribute concert. We loved the ending of The Sopranos (but not the song choice. Journey!?) For those who didn’t appreciate the abruptness, creator David Chase has some words for anybody who gotta problem wit dat. Check out three new songs from Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam, which drops in September. The White Stripes made their triumphant return to the UK by playing a surprise acoustic show to ex-servicemen at a veterans’ hospital. Who wants in on Vince Neil’s Motley Cruise?
