Anton Corbijn Talks Ian Curtis Biopic “Control,” Using Killers Track in Film Rock Daily has brought you exclusive photos from the set of the Ian Curtis biopic Control and a report on the fim’s screening at the Toronto Film Festival — now we’re back with a Q&A with the movie’s director, famed photographer and music-video director Anton Corbjin. Control, Corbijn’s debut feature film, opens in New York on October 10th and in L.A. the following week. What was your impression of Ian when you first photographed him? He was somebody who kept a bit to himself, I thought, but very friendly, and the second time I met him he was a bit more distant, but that was very close to his suicide. I didn’t speak English very well then and of course I had a bit of an accent, so we didn’t have lots of conversation. The photographs I took of [Joy Division] at the time suggested I had a very deep relationship with him because the picture has its own life, they become synonymous with the music that people think I live with them. Photography, beautiful photography, quite often, can be taken in a short period of time and the first session was ten minutes and has lived on forever. What’s the film’s appeal for the person not familiar with Joy Division? It’s not a music film. That was not really my goal, to make it relevant to anybody in that sense. It’s a film about a boy; it’s a dramatic loss story and you go with him from the age of seventeen to twenty-three. He happens to become the singer of Joy Division, so Joy Division plays a part of the film. And Joy Division music is quite simple music, but it’s very hauntingly beautiful and it’s quite timeless, so if you like music, I think you’ll come away with a lot of the band. I seriously believe that because they were era-defining but they’re not specific for an era or to that era in another sense, they don’t sound like the Seventies; they don’t sound like the Eighties; they sound like now. They sound very modern and quite simple, straightforward music, but incredible, beautiful m

Single Minded: Ghostface Killah, Joy Division vs. Dr. Dre, Radiohead’s Webcast and More Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. Ghostface Killah featuring Beanie Sigel & Styles P, “Barrell Brothers” [Passion of the Weiss] We don’t know who leaked the second track from Ghosty’s The Big Doe Rehab, out December 4th, but we’re glad they did. Killah spits with focused veracity and Beanie Sigel unleashes his most spirited verse in ages. Joy Division and Dr. Dre, “Let’s Get High, Joy Division Style” [The Music Slut] What makes this mash-up so shocking is that this combination of JD’s “A Means to an End” and Dre’s “Let’s Get High” is really good, with Dre almost keeping pace with Joy Division’s visceral pace. Justice featuring Mos Def and Spank Rock, “D.A.N.C.E.” [RCRD LBL] Our first visit to the record label/free music blog RCRD LBL gave us this, the thirteen millionth version of Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” With Mos Def and Spank Rock involved, though, it seems that 13,000,000th time’s the charm. Radiohead, thumbs_down Webcast in MP3 form [Music Is Art] Frustrated you can’t bring Radiohead’s Webcast into your car? Now you can! Every song the band DJed and all the covers Radiohead performed are housed at this site for your downloading pleasure. U2, “Wave of Sorrow” preview video [U2.com] In this video, Bono previews a Joshua Tree demo from the album’s upcoming reissue. The highlight comes when Bono starts singing over the song, then stops mid-word to explain what he was singing about.

The Killers Compile B-Sides LP, Slash Pens Memoir, Joy Division Single Re-Released For “Control” Film The Killers are compiling an album full of B-sides and compilation tracks to release at the end of the year (a.k.a. Christmas). The collection will help bridge the gap between those who actually have access to the U.K. singles and those who have no idea how to use file-sharing software. Among the songs included are “All the Pretty Faces,” Spider-Man 3’s “Move Away” and a cover of Joy Division’s “Shadowplay.” Speaking of Joy Division, their classic single “Love Will Tear Us Apart” will be released for the third time on September 24th to coincide with the theatrical arrival of the Ian Curtis biopic Control. More details about the Joy Division album reissues have also emerged: A second disc of live material will accompany each album. The rapper Saigon, famous for screwing over Turtle on the HBO show Entourage, was arrested last night in Manhattan after a car search following a traffic violation found a weapon. The weapon in question: a knife. Slash will join the literary ranks of Keith Richards by putting down his guitar and picking up a pen. Slash is nearly finished with an autobiography that will take aim at all those GN’R rumors that have circulated over the years. Foxy Brown predictably had her probation revoked after smacking a neighbor with a Blackberry and leaving the city without permission only to go violate New Jersey traffic laws. Brown will remain behind bars until a September 7th court date.

Soundstage: Joy Division, Paris Hilton and DMX On Film Welcome to Rock Daily’s new column tracking rock on the big screen. Stay tuned so you don’t miss the next Walk the Line, The Doors or even Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The Joy Division biopic Control will get a New York City release on October 10. The movie, which is based on Deborah Curtis’ (frontman Ian’s wife) book Touching From a Distance, will be rock-photographer legend and music video director Anton Corbijn’s first foray into the feature-film business. The film stars relatively unknown British actor Sam Riley as Curtis and Oscar-nominated Sweet and Lowdown actress Samantha Morton as Deborah. The remaining members of Joy Division will help supply songs for the film’s soundtrack. Though we hesitate to call her a rock star (or a singer … or an actress), Paris Hilton is once again trying her hand on the big screen, this time — gasp — in a musical. The recently incarcerated heiress will attempt to sing and act simultaneously in Repo! The Genetic Opera, a sci-fi musical set in the year 2056, where Hilton will portray the privileged daughter of Paul Sorvino. “I have auditioned at least 30 actresses for this role; Paris came in and owned it,” said Saw director Darren Lynn Bousman. “She is the role.” So, um, who were these other actresses? And New York rapper DMX is currently shooting the action film Jump Out Boys opposite Planet of the Apes‘ Kris Kristofferson in Louisiana. The movie follows the adventures of two escaped convicts. Expect plenty of car chases and explosions, and we presume very little acting.

Killers’ Joy Divison Cover Hits the Web, M.I.A. Helps Jailed Aussie Kids Rhyme, Jadakiss Free From Gun and Drug Charges From the Ian Curtis biopic Control, check out the Killers’ take on Joy Division’s “Shadowplay.” The cover, which will also appear on the Killers’ upcoming B-sides collection Sawdust, finds the Las Vegas band putting a glossy sheen on the moody 1979 classic, like it was being filtered through a Depeche Mode machine. Who knew Joy Division could sound so sunny? Following the first trial showdown of the music industry vs. an illegal music downloader, the RIAA promises that many more of its kind will take place, regardless of whether or not Jammie Thomas, a woman in court for downloading 1,702 songs from Kazaa, is found guilty. “We’re in the long haul in terms of establishing that music has value,” said RIAA president Cary Sherman. M.I.A. has teamed up with an Australian all-girls juvenile detention center to record a new song. Through the Heaps Decent program, which helps indigenous and underprivileged youths break into the music industry, M.I.A. spent two days recording the track utilizing the center’s doors and other noises to establish the beat. The finished product will soon be previewed on the Heaps Decent MySpace page before the full track goes on iTunes, with all profits going back into the program. Prosecutors in Westchester County, New York, have dropped year-old weapon and drug charges against Jadakiss over a lack of DNA matches on a handgun found in a car Jadakiss was driving when he was pulled over and cops found the car reeked of marijuana in October 2006. Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Neilsen is planning on opening a hotel/restaurant in the band’s home base of Rockford, Illinois. “Rick’s,” as the building will be called, will also include a museum that will house Neilsen’s large guitar collection, which includes axes previously owned by Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and Jack White.
