Watch Found Footage of Suicide, The Ramones at Max’s Kansas CityAlong with CBGB, Max’s Kansas City was one of the most famed venues of New York City’s 1970s punk era. The nightclub on Park Avenue South featured performances by the Velvet Underground, the Ramones and Iggy Pop and served as a home away from home for Andy Warhol and his circle of artists and musicians. First opened in 1965, Max’s was also the site of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Aerosmith’s first New York City shows, and after closing in ‘74 and reopening in 1975 as Max’s II, the

Fricke’s Picks: Titans of Power PopIt is hard to resist the cheerful striving all over Titan: It’s All Pop! (Numero Group), a two-CD salute to a shoestring enterprise. Titan Records, an indie power-pop label in Kansas City, Missouri, released a sampler LP and a handful of singles at the turn of the Eighties, shelving as much as it put out. This set is pretty much Titan’s history in full, and the title is no lie. The quality of the next-Beatles and new-Raspberries aspirations of Gary Charlson, the Gems and Millionaire at Midnight (it’s a band) never dips, even if the fidelity isn’t quite Abbey Road. Early Madonna Recordings Hit Web, Feature Material Girl’s First SongsPhoto: Lovekin/Getty An unreleased tape featuring some of Madonna’s earliest recordings has been unearthed. The tape, which was recorded roughly 27 years ago, captures the era in Madonna’s life when she was living in the basement of a Queens, New York synagogue with Ed and Dan Gilroy, who was her boyfriend at the time. Madonna spoke about the brothers in her reflective induction speech at this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Snippets of that speech are interspersed with the old recording, which features one of her early songs “Born To Be A Dancer.” The tape also features Madonna playing guitar and drums on the “first song” she’d ever written, “Tell the Truth.” Soon after the recordings, as Madonna also noted in her Hall of Fame speech, she and her band began playing NYC venues like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. Based on the excerpts, it’s safe to say that Madonna would have made an awesome Debbie Harry if she didn’t become the Material Girl. Earth, Wind & Fire Team Up With Chicago For Joint Summer TourPhoto: Bedder/Getty Two more classic acts are teaming up for a 30-city co-headlining tour: Earth, Wind & Fire and ">Chicago will head out together starting June 5th. The two long-lasting bands also set out on a joint tour in 2004-2005. Each night, both groups will perform a full set apiece, then it’ll be Earth, Wind & Fire & Chicago for the final set as all the musicians hit the stage together. EW&F have enjoyed a renaissance of late, no doubt helped out by big fan President Obama recently having the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers perform at the White House. The prolific Chicago have gone platinum with 25 out of their 30 albums. We’re calling this the Revolving Door Tour, as if you combined the total number of band members both Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago have employed in the past four decades, it’d be somewhere in the 50s. With the slumping economy expected to seep into the summer touring business, multi-artists tours like Poison, Def Leppard and Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon, .38 Special and Styx are becoming a necessity on the circuit. The dates for the E,W&F and Chicago tour are below. June 5 - Orange Beach, AL @ The Amphitheater June 6 - Atlanta, GA @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre June 9 - Charlotte, NC @ Time Warner Cable Arena June 10 - Washington, D.C. @ Merriweather Post Pavilion June 12 - Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Event Center June 13 - Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Event Center June 14 - Bethel, NY @ Bethel Performing Arts Center June 16 - Boston, MA @ Agganis Arena June 17 - New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden June 19 - Ledyard, CT @ MGM Grand Theatre at Foxwoods June 20 - Verona, NY @ Turning Stone Resort Casino June 21 - Columbus, OH @ Value City Arena June 23 - Indianapolis, IN @ Conseco Fieldhouse June 24 - Detroit, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre June 26 - Chicago, IL @ Allstate Arena June 28 - Kansas City, MO @ Sprint Center June 30 - Milwaukee, WI @ Summerfest July 1 - Minneapolis, MN @ Target Center July 10 - Houston, TX @ The Cynthia Woods M

Neil Young Confirms New, Electric Car-Inspired LP “Fork in the Road” Due April 7thPhoto: Gosatti/Getty When Neil Young began playing nine new songs a night towards the end of his 2008 tour it became apparent a new album was in the works. Today it was confirmed that Fork in the Road, a theme record about Young’s Linc Volt electric car project, will come out April 7th. The title track was turned into a hilarious YouTube video earlier this year. The only previously unheard song is “Johnny Magic,” a loving tribute to Jonathan Goodwin, who is Young’s partner in the Linc Volt project. Young has spent significant amounts of time working with Goodwin at his Wichita Kansas garage over the past year. Goodwin, known as the “motorhead messiah,” is one of the worlds preeminent electric car experts, and has little interest in his partner’s other career. “For the first month I thought he was Neil Diamond,” Goodwin told Rolling Stone last year. “I guess he is another singer. My wife told me ‘That’s Neil Young. He sings the older songs.’ To this day I’ve never listened to any of his music.” The album was recorded with Young’s touring band, which includes Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar, keyboards), Chad Cromwell (drums), Rick Rosas (bass), Pegi Young (vocals) and Anthony Crawford (vocals, guitar). They just wrapped up an Australian tour and are headed to Canada and Europe later in the year. Here’s the track listing: “When Worlds Collide” “Fuel Line” “Just Singing A Song” “Johnny Magic” “Cough Up The Bucks” “Get Behind The Wheel” “Off The Road” “Hit The Road” “Light A Candle” “Fork In The Road” Related Stories: • Neil Young’s Eco-Challenge • Neil Young Opens Up the Vaults With Crazy Horse Disc, Box Set • Neil Young: “There’ll Never Be Another Crazy Horse” • Neil Young’s Biggest Fan Speaks: “His Voice Is Haunting,” Says Donald Trump

“Rock Band Unplugged” Coming to PSPRock Band is set to go portable as MTV Games and Harmonix revealed plans to release the music video game exclusively for Sony’s PSP handheld system. According to a press release, Rock Band Unplugged will take advantage of “the PSP system’s Wi-Fi capabilities and becomes the first PSP game to include a fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North American and Europeans markets.” No other details, such as gameplay or tracklist, were officially revealed. Rock Band Unplugged exclusively linking with Sony PSP is likely a response to the Guitar Hero: On Tour game that came out exclusively on the portable Nintendo DS. Whereas the Guitar Hero: On Tour takes advantage of the DS’s touchscreen and microphone capabilities to sort of replicate the Guitar Hero experience, Rock Band Unplugged will reportedly require gamers to touch buttons to match up with the musical cues, Primotech reports. After successfully completing one “phrase” of the song on one of the instruments, the instruments will then change for the next “phrase.” To quote the Twitter of Harmonix designer Dan Teasdale, “Phrase-based lane-switching beatmatch lives again!” While the press release didn’t elaborate on what songs may appear on the game, Primotech says tracks by AFI, Kansas, the Police, Boston and Blink-182 will be featured. The game is due out in fall 2009. Slipknot: "We're gonna be bigger than Metallica"Slipknot percussionist Chris Fehn believes that the Iowan nontet have the potential to be bigger than Metallica. "I think we're going to overtake [them]," Fehn told Kansas City Star. "We haven't even made our [Metallica's 1991] Black record yet. Wait until we do that. It's over, dude. We're going to overtake any band that sells out soccer arenas in Europe. We're going to do it. We're the last chance as far as the world goes."
