LCD Soundsystem Reveal Cover for May 18th LP “This Is Happening”Just when we were growing fond of calling LCD Soundsystem’s upcoming album “TBA,” James Murphy and Co. revealed today on their DFA Records site that the band’s third album will have a proper title, This Is Happening. Accompanying news of the title was Murphy’s Twitter announcement, “Well, we finally made a cover…,” which is that sideways portrait up top of Murphy dancing. The cover image features a stylistic motif reminiscent of David Bowie’s Lodger, and as listeners will discover when This Is H

LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy on Scoring His First Soundtrack for “Greenberg”Photo: Wilson/Webb (Greenberg), Horowitz/WireImage(Murphy) In Noah Baumbach’s new film Greenberg, Ben Stiller plays a curmudgeon who’s more likely to push people away than attract them. And that’s precisely why LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, who wrote the soundtrack, likes the character so much. “I’m Greenberg-esque,” Murphy says proudly. In fact, Murphy’s music was a chief inspiration for the movie: Baumbach was obsessed with LCD Soundsystem’s sarcastic ballad “New York, I Love You But You’re

LCD Soundsystem Debut “Greenberg” Track “Oh You (Christmas Blues)”Photo: Wargo/WireImage A new LCD Soundsystem track hit the Internet last night, but “Oh You (Christmas Blues)” isn’t off James Murphy’s upcoming LCD album. Instead, the bluesy number is one of dozen or so songs Murphy penned for the Ben Stiller film Greenberg, and the one song on the soundtrack to appear under the LCD Soundsystem name. Listen to a radio rip of the song over at We All Want Someone to Shout For. Despite being credited to LCD, “Oh You (Christmas Blues)” sounds nothing like Sound of

James Murphy Opens Up About “Crazy” May LCD Soundsystem LPPhoto: Wargo/WireImageWhat’s the new LCD Soundsystem record like? “Boring!” raves James Murphy. Having just shipped off a last-minute addition for Shellac’s Bob Weston to master, Murphy is completely exhausted by the as-of-yet-untitled May album — which he also describes as “weird” and “crazy” — and he feels like he’s heard it one time too many. “You ever listen to a song 40 times?” he asks. “That’s why I don’t write the lyrics until as close to the day I sing it as I can, so I don’t get sick of

David Byrne Hooks Up With Brazilian Girls for “Losing Myself”New York dance trio Brazilian Girls have teamed up with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for “Losing Myself,” a new collaboration that hits iTunes today. A version of the song featuring French lyrics originally appeared on the group’s 2008 album New York City. The Brynified rendition features not only English but also the closest thing you’ll ever get to David Byrne actually rapping. “Losing Myself” is Byrne’s third hip-hop/dance-flavored collaboration of 2009, and it’s only March: He hooked up with Breaking duo N.A.S.A. for a pair of tracks, “The People Tree” and “Money,” and teamed with Dizzee Rascal on “Toe Jam,” which featured on Fatboy Slim’s BPA album I Think We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat. Plus, the former Talking Head reportedly has a concept album with Fatboy Slim titled Here Lies Love due out at some point this year. And this all follows Byrne’s acclaimed 2008 collaboration with Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. “Losing Myself” grooves like a funky LCD Soundsystem jam. Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem Extend Tour, Guns N’ Roses Reunite (Maybe, and Without Axl), The Shins Turn You On The colossal tour featuring The Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem will thankfully grace cities other than Louisville and St. Paul, as more dates have been added. The first addition: An October 6th show on NYC’s Randall’s Island. According to former member Steven Adler, at least 80% of the original Guns N’ Roses lineup will reconvene at the Key Club in L.A. to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction. This makes two more members than first announced. The missing one-fifth, Axl Rose, is on the guest list, but unlikely to show up. Rihanna, fresh off of breaking UK chart records with “Umbrella,” is getting all synergistic by releasing her own line of umbrellas. The Shins’ “Turn On Me” single, out September 3rd, will sport a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe,” as well as their contribution to the TV show Weeds, as B-sides. The Hives are having “Chinese Democracy“-like troubles recording their new album, so expect their next album to be released in or around 2014. Photo: Dyson/Getty

The Album Is Dead! Long Live the Album! As record sales continue to tank by the week, artists and fans are getting crazy nostalgic for the halcyon days of the disc. But maybe the death of the full-length LP has been greatly exaggerated: Could the album actually be waging a comeback? The new video game Rock Band will feature entire albums as templates for aspiring rockers. First up is the Who’s Who’s Next. Metallica, who’ve long resisted putting their music online, will include “Enter Sandman,” with more tracks available in the future. Last weekend at the Pitchfork Music Festival, three headliners performed albums in their entirety: drone-rockers Slint revisted their 1991 cult classic Spiderland, Sonic Youth tore through their 1988 noise-rock masterpiece Daydream Nation and Wu-Tang rapper GZA unleashed his 1995 album Liquid Swords. Reissues are coming out at ridiculous rates. Some are records we thought we bought just yesterday, like Foo Fighters’ repackaging of their 1997 disc The Colour and the Shape. iTunes has been offering up full albums for sale at bargain-bin rates (well, $5.99 and $6.99), focusing on Next Big Thing artists like LCD Soundsystem.

LCD Soundsystem Rock the “Drunk Girls” at Surprise Brooklyn GigPhotograph by Jon Wilde“I have good news and bad news,” James Murphy said as LCD Soundsystem took the stage for the first time in over two years last night in Brooklyn. “The good news is, we’re here. The bad news is, I’m wasted.” No no, dude — that’s the great news. The New York punk-funk heavyweights have an early single-of-the-year contender with the irresistible rock anthem “Drunk Girls,” but it’s a totally different song when several hundred drunk girls are there screaming along. Fans React To Marilyn Manson’s Dance-Punky New Song “We’re From America”Photo: Kravitz/FilmMagic As Rock Daily reported last week, Marilyn Manson’s new track “We’re From America,” from the upcoming The High End of Low, was posted as a free download on the shock rocker’s official Website. If the song is any indication of what we might expect from Manson’s new LP, it seems like the Anti-Christ Superstar may be heading in a dance-punk direction a step away from the industrial metal and goth pop of previous albums like 2007’s Eat Me Drink Me. Perhaps it’s because Manson is happy to have Twiggy Ramirez back in the fold, but the music ranks among the most upbeat of the singer’s career, even if the lyrics are ultra-critical view of the U.S.A. So, how are the fans feeling about Manson’s new sound? First, to our ears, “We’re From America” sounds like a Mansonized version of LCD Soundsystem’s “North American Scum,” from its lyrics mocking America down to its vocal cadence and thrash breakdown on the choruses. Over at the Manson message board the Heirophant Council, the general consensus seems to be pretty positive, with fans celebrating the track’s propulsive riff and beat. To quote one message boarder, “It’s a really catchy and ‘ballsy’ song, fuck yeah!” If the fans have any complaints, it’s the repetitiveness and somewhat clichéd lyrics. “The word America becomes a symbol in this song, and it’s nowhere nearly as provocative as it tries to be,” writes one poster. “It’s been done a countless number of times in recent years, and done better — even by Manson himself. It seems like a fill-in-the-blank Manson parody by MAD TV.” The High End of Low is due out May 26th, and will be preceded by first single “Arma… geddon.” So what’s your take on Manson’s latest opus? We’re accepting your reviews in the comments.
