Death Cab at the DNC: Chris Walla on “Badass” Patrick LeahyPhoto: Getty Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla is on the ground in Denver for the Democratic National Convention and blogging for RollingStone.com. Here’s his first dispatch: On the stereo: Fleetwood Mac, “Walk a Thin Line” My nearest frame of reference for a political convention like the DNCC is SXSW, the annual indie rock melee in Austin, Texas. We’ve been there as a band a handful of times, and I’ve been twice on my own. It’s a train wreck of logistics: Hundreds of bands (many self-managed and very literally independent) trying desperately to find their credentials, their gigs, their accommodations (often the floors of friends) and perhaps most importantly their free beer. There’s definitely free beer to be found, but it’s something of a treasure hunt in Austin. The free drinks seem easier to come by here at the DNCC, but everything else is much more difficult than SXSW. For one, there are black helicopters everywhere and snipers on rooftops, that sort of thing. More riot cops than I remember even at the WTO in Seattle in 1999. And mounted police. Bigass horses on every corner between about 15th and 19th Streets, for a few blocks on either side of Broadway downtown. I’m desperately trying to get my bearings here in Denver — this here mess is tricky to navigate, both in physical and logistical terms. Last night, though, I was lucky enough to get into the reception for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She’s quite the force, much more commanding in person than she sometimes appears on television, and she led an impressive pep rally for the hundred or so House reps, TV producers and guests gathered there. Free wine, but no beer to be found. Funny little expensive-looking hors d’oeuvres. And I think Henry Winkler was there. My new favorite rep, though, is Debbie Wasserman Schultz, from Florida’s 20th district — Broward County, including Fort Lauderdale. She introduced the speaker at the reception, and while I won’t claim to know much about her legislative history (though

Interpol Backstage at Madison Square Garden: Rolling Stone checks in with the band hours before their debut gig at New York's historic venueMon, Sep 17 2007 03:20 PDT Rolling Stone met up with Interpol just after they arrived at their surprisingly posh dressing room backstage at Madison Square Garden. The band recounted a brief history of their favorite dressing rooms. "There was a dressing room in Houston, Texas — it wasn't stylish, but it had atmosphere because it had been used over and over again. It had a little bit of a punk-rock history to it. Very rough around the edges," drummer Sam Fogarino remembered. Photo">

Smoking Section: Jack Johnson on the Beach, Midlake in the Studio and Jimmie Dale Gilmore on Stage In December, the Smoking Section winged it out to Santa Barbara to hang out with Jack Johnson. Sitting on the rocky coastline with a fat spliff in our mitts watching Johnson shred massive swells was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the wild ride that was 2007. We witnessed amazing performances — Lucinda Williams‘ five-night stand in Manhattan, Stevie Wonder at the Garden, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the Hamptons, Pearl Jam in Chicago, Wilco at Bonnaroo, The Killers in London and the Foo Fighters in a Vegas hotel room (sadly, we missed Dave Grohl’s “New Year’s Eve Disco Party” in L.A.). We moved into Kid Rock’s Malibu bachelor pad for a few days, tore up Paris with Ben Harper, guzzled absinthe at Marilyn Manson’s house and embraced our inner player, cocktailing with Snoop, strip-clubbing with Kanye and l’chaim-ing Jay-Z. It all poured sweet and clear — it was a very good year. * * * * If the SS had one regret from ‘07, it was that we were never in the same city as Midlake. The Denton, Texas, fivesome awed us with the mellow explorations of The Trials of Van Occupanther, and we’re happy to report that they’re home, taking their sweet-ass time on the follow-up. “It will be called The Courage of Others,” reports singer Tim Smith. “I think it will sound darker — not dark like Sabbath, but a little more minor-key.” Whereas Van Occupanther was recorded in their living room (”That was tough, because of roommates”), Midlake now occupy their own studio in Denton, with families and dogs waiting at home. “We’ve been going in at 8 a.m. and we’re done by 5,” says Smith, whose songwriting has been influenced, most recently, by No Other, the mysterioso 1974 solo gem from Gene Clark of the The Byrds. “We were jammin’ pretty hard this morning,” Smith says. “We said to ourselves, ‘No other rock band does this at 9:30 i

ICYMI: Willie Nelson’s Daughter Roundhouse Kicks Some Drunk Dude Off Rock StageI wasn't aware that Willie Nelson had a daughter who played in bluesy Texas bar band, but even without the tenuous celebrity connection, this video (sent in by Matt Dentler) is still sort of awesome for no other reason than - at about 1:20 in - you get to see some chick kick a drunk dude several feet off a small stage. While the victim was clearly wasted and douchebaggy-looking, it's unclear what was written on the piece of paper he obsessively kept trying to show everyone. Whatever it was couldn't have been too good, cause Willie's little girl gave the guy a foot-pounding that would make Johnny Lawrence feel guilty. But I feel sort of bad for Drunkie McDrunkerson when the rest of the crowd seems to follow suit in the ass-stomping. Anyway, see the video after the jump.

What Do Lesbians And Kirsten Dunst Bring On The Second Date? A U-Haul Full Of Their Furniture.
(WENN)
Kirsten Dunst followed her latest hook-up to London. Hell, I have trouble following my latest hook-ups out of the bar. I don't want to stop drinking! Screw them! Screw them HARD!
Kirsten and her new floppy-haired British boyfriend, Johnny Borrell looked very outfit-coordinated while strolling through London the other day. Things are evidently getting pretty serious between the two who met while he was on tour with his band, Razorlight, in the states just a few weeks back. Friends says they are so enamored with each other that Johnny dumped his girlfriend and Kirsten joined the band on tour. Here's more:
A source revealed: "This relationship is the real thing. They met when Johnny was touring the US and she followed him around like a lovesick puppy.
"She flew to Texas to join him at the South By South West festival then the band returned to Britain.
"But they hated being apart and on Friday she flew to London and is staying in his flat. No one is sure how long she will be here for. She's filming in Europe soon so she could be in London a fair bit."
Yes, it's moving a little fast, but Kirsten looks really happy. Besides, she recently said that she didn't want a fancy man so an indie rocker seems right up her alley. We can only imagine there will be lots of matching skinny jeans days ahead.
He must have been slinging some magical British D. Well, she is filming there. You know he's with his friends and like "hey geeza, yeah, I got this bird at my flat. She's really pale and smokes a lotta fags, and I don't know how to bloody well git rid of her. She's not even that fit. Bollocks!"
