Readers’ Rock List: Bird SongsPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty In memory of Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell, the musician responsible for the famous introduction to the band’s “Free Bird” (and to honor last night’s great effort by the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl), this weekend’s Rock List was dedicated to Bird Songs. It was a heated battle between two former Super Bowl Halftime Show performers, but in the end Paul McCartney and the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird” edged out Prince and his Purple Rain gem “When Doves Cry” for the prize. To see where Alice in Chains, the Misfits and Wilco all nested, check out our Readers’ Rock List: Bird Songs below: 1. The Beatles – “Blackbird” 2. Prince – “When Doves Cry” 3. Alice In Chains – “Rooster” 4. The Beatles – “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” 5. Bob Marley – “Three Little Bird” 6. The Trashmen – “Surfin’ Bird” 7. The Beatles – “And Your Bird Can Sing” 8. The Grateful Dead – “Bird Song” 9. Steve Miller Band – “Fly Like An Eagle” 10. Phish – “Birds of a Feather” 11. The Misfits – “Where Eagles Dare” 12. Nelly Furtado – “Like A Bird” 13. Fleetwood Mac – “Songbird” 14. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird” 15. Wilco – “Hummingbird”

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Halleran/Getty Images Rock Daily had Las Vegas panicked when we revealed the winning answer to all those Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl Halftime Show bets, forcing most gambling sites to shut down all Bruce-related betting. We have the full story on that plus much more at our Super Bowl Hub — Rock Daily will be in Tampa this weekend to root on the Steelers and witness the Springsteen set. The music world was saddened by the deaths of Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell and Solid Air singer-songwriter John Martyn. The Grammys hired every gun possible to ensure people will tune in to this year’s show: Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake were all announced as 2009 Grammy performers on Monday, then yesterday U2, Kid Rock, Plant & Krauss and Rihanna were joined the Grammy bill. Speaking of Macca, Sir Paul will go from The Colbert Report to Coachella lineup. Weezy revealed he’s making the jump from beats to electric guitars with Lil Wayne’s “real rock album” Rebirth, due out April 7th. Wayne also debuted his new single “Prom Queen” and settled his lawsuit with the Rolling Stones.

Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark EP Artist: Drive-By Truckers Review: Prospects were poor for what turns out to be an overflowing song bag of an album by Lynyrd Skynyrd's arty nephews. Their last winner was 2004's The Dirty South, preceded by two others in close succession but followed by the disoriented A Blessing and a Curse and then the loss of tenor-songwriter Jason Isbell. Welcome though her gender bend is, bassist and Isbell ex Shonna Tucker doesn't compensate by writing and singing. But Mike Cooley is on his game &
