Madness: Most viewed pictures

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily • Rock & roll icon Bo Diddley died at the age of 79. Billy Gibbons, George Thorogood and Buddy Guy all remembered the creator of the Bo Diddley Beat. • It was another week of Metallica madness, as the band previewed six songs from their new album to positive response and were honored with their very own Guitar Hero. • The prosecution rested at the R. Kelly trial and the defense went to work, attacking key witnesses, alleging extortion, calling music journalists to the stand and asking “Where’s the mole?” • We continued our Guitar Heroes coverage, as Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and John Mayer all told us their secrets. We also asked our readers to tell us their Greatest Guitar Songs list.

In the Studio: The Vines The Vines caught their break with 2002’s platinum Highly Evolved, but singer Craig Nicholls nearly killed their momentum with his freakouts, from trashing dressing rooms to berating fans. Since getting diagnosed in 2005 with Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism, Nicholls has been focusing with his band on their fourth disc, helmed by Evolved producer Rob Schnapf. “Nothing can hold us back now,” says Nicholls. “Unless I die in a plane crash.” The fourteen new cuts include the string-laden “True as the Night” and the heavy-pop tune “Merry Go Round.” Says Nicholls of the Vines’ return, “We’re coming back, and it’s gonna be madness.” [Photo: Getty]

Comments of the Week: Our Led Zeppelin-Loving Readers Won’t Get Fooled AgainPhoto: Walter/WireImage Look, we don’t usually aim to confuse readers, and we try to snuff out comment board flame wars before they get out of hand (example: any Chris Brown post), but the conversation that followed our story with the headline “Led Zeppelin Roller Coaster May Ride Again: Hard Rock Park Rescued By New Owners” was by far the funniest thing that we read this week. Enjoy all the madness below: Arlington, VA “NO FAIR! Another misleading headline getting us to link to an article that couldn’t be further from the subject we all think we are linking to.” disbot 3000 “Imagine that: A teaser headline that doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story in order to draw readers in. I don’t think it’s ever been done before in the history of all media. If that’s the best thing you’ve got in your life to get upset over, yours must be a grand life indeed. Kudos to you!” Anonymous “To Arlington: Exactly what part of ‘Led Zeppelin Roller Coaster May Ride Again: Hard Rock Park Rescued By New Owners’ vs the actual story inside, did you find misleading??” Anonymous “The headline CLEARLY states the article is about HARD ROCK PARK, and the Led Zeppelin rollercoaster. If you thought the link was going to be a story about a Led Zeppelin reunion, you are a total moron who doesn’t know how to read.” Greg “taking the metaphor of a rock and roll band as a rollercoaster, it might be a little misleading to say that a once-defunct band may ‘ride again’ i.e., play again. I’m just saying. Please don’t beat me, anonymous.” Anonymous “Greg, If you took even the fraction of a second to read the FULL headline, ‘Led Zeppelin Roller Coaster May Ride Again: Hard Rock Park Rescued By New Owners’…. we wouldn’t be having this discussion. You only partially read it. No excuses. You lose.” Thanks to Greg, the multiple Anonymous, Arlington and everyone who else made this, the longest four-day week of our lives, just a little bit brighter. You guys are the best. Sincerely, the Rock Daily crew.

Fricke’s Picks: Porcupine Tree, the Future Kings of England and the Raspberries The Art of Nightmares Porcupine Tree – the long-running British progressive-rock band founded and commanded by singer-guitarist-composer Steven Wilson – are rare in their field: obsessed not with fantasy but the death of it, particularly in children. At a recent head-trip gig at New York’s Beacon Theatre, films of sickly-white preteen zombies – hypnotized by computer screens, gulping medication, brandishing handguns – were projected on a screen behind Wilson during his tangled distortion-bomb riffing in the long title track of the recent album, Fear of a Blank Planet (Atlantic), and the record’s even longer centerpiece nightmare, “Anesthetize.” A schoolgirl ran amok in what looked like a ruined psych ward during the convulsive title instrumental from the group’s new EP, Nil Recurring (Transmission). Wilson started Porcupine Tree in 1987 as a home-studio experiment that has since evolved, live and on an extensive series of records, into an aggressively modern merger of Rush’s arena art rock, U.K. prog classicism – especially Pink Floyd’s eulogies to madness and King Crimson’s angular majesty – and the postgrunge vengeance of Tool. There are no dragons evident on Fear of a Blank Planet or Nil Returning. But there are plenty of demons. And King Crimson guitarist-sage Robert Fripp plays on both records, an impeccable seal of approval. New Royal Freaks Witches and fiends run riot through the lyrics and instrumental vapors of the six extended tracks on The Fate of Old Mother Orvis (Backwater), by the Future Kings of England. The audaciously named British band’s mix of art rock and freak folk is also rife with other specters – the pastoral Floyd, ’72 Genesis, the echosoup psychedelia of Amon Düül II – whipped together with an ardor that sounds like yesterday and tomorrow at once. Seventies Rock Candy Hard and sweet, the Raspberries were never the second coming of the Beatles. They were, in the early Seventies, and still are – based on a show I just saw by the original li

"Super Taranta!" by Gogol BordelloThe latest record from this New York-based but globally-minded gypsy-punk outfit will probably encounter listeners in two categories: those who already stalk the band, rabidly awaiting their next show; and those who are waiting to be converted or are simply on the fence. First, the good news for the uninitiated and the non-believers: Gogol Bordello play a volatile fusion of global sounds and their magpie vision is well-realized here. Eastern European melodies and thrashing punk riffs trade jabs with occasional touches of ska or dub, building into brilliantly crazed jams. For all the high-octane eclecticism, what immediately shines through is singer Eugene Hutz's pipes. He belts 'em out like a Russian Shane McGowan, drunk on vodka, jet lag and righteous indignation. The skinny on Gogol Bordello is that all their sonic madness is all the more, well, mad in concert. Those who've already been won over by their live gigs can take heart, Super Taranta! comes close to matching that
