The New York Times Battles a Googler for New JerseyWhy is the Gray Lady building websites for the obscure suburbs of South Orange, Maplewood, and Milburn? Perhaps because those are the exact same towns Google executive Tim Armstrong picked for Patch, his local-news startup. Armstrong, Google's top U.S. sales executive, has invested in Patch, a company which promises to develop "hyperlocal" websites focusing on news coverage specific to their communities. He's putting in money from his own fortune — money which he made through Google's lucrative IPO — but one must imagine New York Times executives view Patch as a stalking horse for the search engine. Hence the new Times feature called The Local. Besides Patch's three towns, The Local will also cover two Brooklyn neighborhoods. It will be entertaining to hear the Times spin on why it picked Patch's turf to launch The Local. Milburn's attractive demographics? South Orange's thriving cultural scene? No, the Times is waging an old-fashioned newspaper war — on the still-unfamiliar turf of the Internet, against a Google millionaire. This will be by far more interesting than anything else that happens in Maplewood.

Ghost Story Four Men who have known each other since childhood gather together in the library of Sears James (John Houseman). They are Edward Wanderly (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.), the town mayor; Ricky Hawthorne (Fred Ataire), Sears law partner; John Jaffrey (Melvyn Douglas), a very sick doctor, and Sears. They are participating in a ritual which has gone on for years: they are scaring the pants off each other with ghost stories. The Chowder Society, as they call themselves, are bound together as if they were family. It is Sears turn to tell the story, and its a doozy about a man buried alive. The group breaks up for the evening, each man heading home in the dark New England winter night. It is an uneasy night with the men affected by an unspoken fear.In New York City, a young man, David Wanderly (Craig Wasson), Edwards son, comes toward a young woman in his apartment. He is tormented by something in her. When she turns towards him, his face fills with terror as he crashes out the windows and over the balcony. He is dead.Don Wanderly (Craig Wasson), Davids twin, awakens to the phone ringing but Don already knows. His brother is dead. He is soon on a bus headed back from California to Milburn for his brothers funeral. The tension between father and son is apparent. They find it hard to talk. Edward wont listen to Dons insistent argument that David was murdered that it had something to do with Davids fiance. Don knew her too. But Edward wont listen. The police say it was an accident. The Chowder Society gather for Davids funeral along with Rickys wife Stella (Patricia Neal). With nightfall, an eerie feeling among the four old men is again in the air.
