John Lennon Catalog Finally Available on iTunes; George Harrison Solo Work Due By End of 2007, Says Source Today John Lennon became the third Beatle on iTunes: Sixteen of Lennon’s solo album are officially (and finally) available for download via the music service. Though some of Lennon’s solo work has been available via other digital downloading services since late 2005, today marks both the iTunes and worldwide digital debut of Legend and Acoustic. Exclusive video content will be included (for a limited thirty-day period of time) with John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Sometime in New York City, Walls and Bridges, Milk and Honey, and the collections Anthology and Working Class Hero. “John would have loved the fact that his music will now be available in a format suited to a new generation of listeners,” said Yoko Ono. With solo work by three out of the four Beatles now available on iTunes, it seems we’re one step closer to the inevitable digital release of the entire Beatles catalog. In fact, an industry source tells Rolling Stone that George Harrison’s solo catlog is due on iTunes by the end of 2007. Photo: AFP/Getty

Van Halen Relaunch Tour With Flashy, Hit-Laden Sin City Performance When Van Halen last hit Vegas for a pair of shows in December, the group’s legendary guitarist was not doing too well. On the first night, despite his health history, Eddie Van Halen kept a cigarette affixed to his axe for easy access. Even more disconcertingly, fans noticed the guitarist was wobbly on his feet and took at least one embarrassing stumble during the concert. Then last month Van Halen had to reschedule some shows so their rehabbed cancer survivor guitarist could undergo undisclosed medical tests. But the band made its triumphant return in Las Vegas on Saturday night, headlining Tiger Woods’ Tiger Jam, the golf icon’s annual charity concert. The veteran band was not taking anything for granted, either: a few hours before the show the band worked repeatedly sound checking “Hot for Teacher.” “We are here to listen to one of the greatest bands in history,” Tiger Woods, the greatest golfer in history, announced to the audience. “It is my honor to introduce you to Van Halen.” There was no stumbling this time around. The set opened with a guitar squeal followed by a shirtless Eddie Van Halen looking great and leaping out from behind the curtain and into the familiar chords of “You Really Got Me.” Meanwhile, Diamond Dave and the boys were still hiding behind a black skrim awaiting the grand showbiz reveal. But that was Eddie Van Halen on this night: a player who couldn’t wait to get started, play more and milk each note from his guitar for two hours. He is back. While David Lee Roth can’t seem to do anything with his voice but fall flat, the man was born to be a headliner in Vegas: Top hats! Outlandishly dated outfits! Roundhouse kicks! “I can not play golf for shit,” Roth told the crowd. “But I can ruin my knee with the pros.” The 40-something audience enjoyed the run through the Van Halen double-barrelled greatest hits catalogue: “And The Cradle Wil

Photo Gallery: The Police From the Inside Our informal assessment: On top of being guitarist for the Police, a former member of the Animals and a surprisingly good writer, Andy Summers is also a pretty damned talented photographer. We caught up with Summers at New York’s Milk Gallery yesterday, where his photo exhibit “I’ll Be Watching You: Inside The Police 1980-1983″ — featuring lots of disarming black-and-white shots of the band at rest and backstage — is being displayed. When the Police reformed earlier this year for a world tour Summers brought his camera along for the ride, which may lead to a second collection. Click here to see a selection of shots from the exhibit, along with commentary from Summers himself.

"Ire Works" by The Dillinger Escape PlanWith Ire Works, New Jersey's Dillinger Escape Plan reinvent the term "prog." No, Dillinger haven't started writing 12-minute epics rife with keyboard leads. Rather, the band cram their breakneck rhythms, creepy choruses and abrupt car-crash polyrhythms into some of the catchiest three-minute anthems that extreme metal has ever seen. Electronic flourishes coat the understated metallic violence of "Sick on Sunday" and create entrancing textures à la Massive Attack. Meanwhile, "Fix Your Face" and "Milk Lizard" are the requisite brain bashers that Dillinger fans have come to love. "82588" has some brooding jazz guitar doodling that only sharpens the musical terror on the horizon toward the end of the track. Elsewhere "Horse Hunter" enlists the screams of Mastodon axeman Brent Hinds for a vocal marriage made in extreme metal heaven. The standout track "Black Bubblegum" melds some Nine Inch Nails grooves, Mike Patton-style crooning and a crazy time

"Unbreakable" by Backstreet BoysWhat becomes of the now-defunct boy band? Aborted trips into space, reality TV humiliations, or, for the Backstreet Boys, that difficult transition from boy-band to man-band. Trading lewd dance moves for staring moodily into the middle distance, their sixth studio album sees the "vocal harmony group" switching fast beats for ballads. Lots of ballads. There's something dignified in this sedentary path, at least, and backed by expert arrangements, the band know how to milk every moment of emotion from their shattered hearts. With lashings of sincerity and sweeping crescendos, the collection is one long parade of metaphoric misery: rain pours down, doors close and card houses stand fast in the midst of hurricanes. Lead single "Inconsolable," full of strings and tormented harmonies, delivers a mid-tempo lament typical of the collection, but it's the scaled-back melodies on "Unsuspecting Sunday Afternoon" that are most touching—the minimal chorus drifting down the

milk inc - racegood morning! i'm in the mood for some fluffy euro pop - and belgian's milk inc with their new single race (off their latest album forever) fits the bill perfectly! the 'vocal trance band' has actually been in existence since like '97 and have since released five studio albums - it sounds like they're quite popular in belgium (any belgians out there? please do chime in!) plus they are the only act to garner 15 TMF awards (14 in belgium / 1 in the netherlands) there's a hot 'race' remix below plus you can also watch the video - it's certainly not ground breaking music by any means but it's totally enjoyable - perfect for this somewhat dreary monday! popbytes over & out for now...xoxo » listen to milk inc's race - original extended mix (.mp3 13.8mb)

And in other "sexually ambiguous pop geniuses ... [Prince]And in other "sexually ambiguous pop geniuses who peaked in the 80s" news today, Prince sent C & D letters to three fansites-- www.housequake.com, www.princefams.com and www.prince.org--ordering them to remove all lyrics and "anything linked to Prince's likeness" from their web pages. They vow to band together and fight back under the banner of internet freedom speech, decrying the action as "the equivalent of waking up Christmas morning to find Purple Santa has pooped on your cookie plate and filled his milk glass with urine."
