Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell Preview Projekt Revolution

Linkin Park’s annual Projekt Revolution Tour kicks off tonight outside of Boston, so Rock Daily sat down with LP’s Chester Bennington and co-headliner Chris Cornell to talk about this summer’s jaunt. “What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I’m part of the reason they’re there. Linkin Park Announce Summer Tour With My Chemical Romance

Following their appearance at the Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey this weekend, Linkin Park stopped by New York’s Museum of Television and Radio to announce the details of their fourth Projekt Revolution tour, which kicks off on July 25th and hits twenty-nine amphitheaters before wrapping on September 3rd in Englewood, Colorado. The band will be joined on the main stage by fellow Bamboozlers My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday, as well as HIM, Placebo and Julien-K. “If you took Linkin Park off this bill it would still be the best bill of the summer,” says singer Chester Bennington. “Saying yes to this tour was a no-brainer,” My Chem’s Gerard Way adds. “Linkin Park has a vision, just like our band and Taking Back Sunday.” An eco-friendly outing, Projekt Revolution will include side stage performances by Saosin, The Bled and Mindless Self-Indulgence, among others.

Ready for Revolution

How does being around all these different artists on the Projekt Revolution tour inspire you? Chris Cornell: Being on tour can sometimes be less complicated than being at home because your day is regimented. You wake up in the morning, you warm up, you do a soundcheck, you play your show, you sleep or get on the bus — every single day is like that. There's someone putting a sheet of paper under your door telling you what time you're gonna do what. But a festival tour like this is very different. It's much less predictable and a lot of different things can happen. And seeing other bands perform for me changes my whole mood in terms of what I end up bringing onstage. I've often watched live performance footage from any band before I go onstage just 'cause it gets me in that mindset. Chester Bennington: What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I'm part of the reason they're there. For me, last Projekt Revolution was probably the best touring experience I've ever had. For me to be able to bring out Mindless Self Indulgence — a band that I've always liked and I've felt that they've never really gotten the love that they deserve — to see them show up and play with another band like Saosin and 5,000 kids are showing up at noon, just like, "Yes, it's happening." And I felt really proud that they got to do that and that Gerard [Way, of My Chemical Romance] and Lyn-Z [Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lindsey Ballato] reignited their friendship and then ended up getting married backstage on the last show. I was like, "This is freaking awesome." When we did Ozzfest I couldn't go to the main stage because I had the wrong pass. I felt like I was segregated from everybody else. The main stage guys were in their superstar land and it was just like, "I don't feel comfortable here." Smoking Section: Justin Timberlake’s Upcoming Plans, My Chemical Romance and More

Bury the rag deep in your face: The FutureSex/LoveSounds era is about to come to a close. At the end of November, after eighteen months of sold-out gigs, Justin Timberlake is taking a break. “It’s like, I’m over myself,” he tells the Smoking Section. “I’m sure a lot of other people are too.” JT is looking forward to puffing on the sweet Mary Jane and hitting the slopes. In ‘08, he plans to work as the hands-on CEO of his fledgling label, Tennman Records. “After I get all the hotboxing and snowboarding out of the way,” he says, “I’ve got four artists to be in the studio with.” That would be Internet sensation Esmee Denters, a rap group from Memphis called Free Sol, R&B singer Brenda Radney and his old pal, songwriter Matt Morris. Says JT, “Until I get that urge to make my own record, this is what’s exciting to me.” *** My Chemical Romance’s October 7th gig at the Palacio de Los Deportes, in Mexico City, was a milestone for the band. For the last time, the quintet engaged in the macabre processional known as the Black Parade — based, of course, on their album of the same name. Luckily, they caught the perform ance on tape. “To finally see it executed on film is going to be really amazing,” singer Gerard Way tells the S.S. After dates in Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia, the band will take a nice little break, which couldn’t come at a better time for the singer, who got married in a backstage ceremony in September — during the Projekt Revolution Tour — to Lyn Z, the bassist from Mindless Self Indulgence. “Married life is fuckin’ amazing,” says Way. “Especially being in a relationship that I only thought could be a fictional thing.
