Weekend Rock List: Jimi HendrixPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty This week brought a ton of Jimi Hendrix excitement: news arrived that the Greatest Guitarist of All Time — who just so happens to be on the cover of Rolling Stone — will be coming soon to Rock Band, and Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister sat down to recall his days working as Jimi’s roadie. So let’s break out the Hendrix canon this weekend: name your favorite Jimi tracks and we’ll tally up the votes Monday. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys and all those post

Q&A: Lemmy Kilmister on Motorhead’s Longevity, Famous Friends and Bad AdviceWhen Rolling Stone dialed up Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister to discuss the band’s 20th studio release, Motörizer (out August 26th), the famously moled rocker was happy to share his recipe for the perfect beverage: “One-third Jack, two-thirds Coke, about five ice cubes. Don’t bother stirring it, it’ll stir you! And then bend over, double and drink it upside down — that’ll cure your fucking hiccups!” Kilmister also opened up about stupid record-company advice, the war in Iraq, his days hanging with Jimi Hendrix and his new documentary, Lemmy: The Movie. • Q&A: Lemmy Kilmister [Photo: Getty]

Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister: Vampire of the Sunset StripPhotograph by Pep Bonet / NOOR Lemmy Kilmister may be the most indestructible rocker alive. At 63 years old, he still spends nearly every day he’s not on tour swilling bourbon at West Hollywood’s legendary rocker hangout the Rainbow Bar & Grill — and his band still plays about 150 shows a year. Rolling Stone’s Mark Binelli put in some quality time at the Rainbow (and Kilmister’s nearby apartment, stocked with a mind-blowing array of WWII and Nazi memorabilia) for a profile of Motörhead’s singer/

Neil Young Confirms New, Electric Car-Inspired LP “Fork in the Road” Due April 7thPhoto: Gosatti/Getty When Neil Young began playing nine new songs a night towards the end of his 2008 tour it became apparent a new album was in the works. Today it was confirmed that Fork in the Road, a theme record about Young’s Linc Volt electric car project, will come out April 7th. The title track was turned into a hilarious YouTube video earlier this year. The only previously unheard song is “Johnny Magic,” a loving tribute to Jonathan Goodwin, who is Young’s partner in the Linc Volt project. Young has spent significant amounts of time working with Goodwin at his Wichita Kansas garage over the past year. Goodwin, known as the “motorhead messiah,” is one of the worlds preeminent electric car experts, and has little interest in his partner’s other career. “For the first month I thought he was Neil Diamond,” Goodwin told Rolling Stone last year. “I guess he is another singer. My wife told me ‘That’s Neil Young. He sings the older songs.’ To this day I’ve never listened to any of his music.” The album was recorded with Young’s touring band, which includes Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar, keyboards), Chad Cromwell (drums), Rick Rosas (bass), Pegi Young (vocals) and Anthony Crawford (vocals, guitar). They just wrapped up an Australian tour and are headed to Canada and Europe later in the year. Here’s the track listing: “When Worlds Collide” “Fuel Line” “Just Singing A Song” “Johnny Magic” “Cough Up The Bucks” “Get Behind The Wheel” “Off The Road” “Hit The Road” “Light A Candle” “Fork In The Road” Related Stories: • Neil Young’s Eco-Challenge • Neil Young Opens Up the Vaults With Crazy Horse Disc, Box Set • Neil Young: “There’ll Never Be Another Crazy Horse” • Neil Young’s Biggest Fan Speaks: “His Voice Is Haunting,” Says Donald Trump

Oops: “Guitar Hero: Metallica” Cover Art Misspells Lynyrd SkynyrdThe cover has been unveiled for the anxiously awaited Guitar Hero: Metallica, and the artwork pumps up the contributions of all the bands not named Metallica featured in the game, like Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, Queen, and Lynyrd… Skynrd (check the left-center). Sadly, it seems the Southern rock heroes have lost a Y in their band name — haven’t they lost enough already? Even the (properly) misspelled Mercyful Fate get their name handled correctly, and the oft-mangled Mastodon pass the fact-checking test. It doesn’t mean that Skynyrd’s bluesy kiss-off “Tuesday’s Gone” will be any less fun to play, though. It’s also been announced that Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister will make an appearance as an animated character in the game, so players can gargle along with “Ace of Spades” without having to see a spiky-haired punk rock caricature singing it onscreen. There are also multiple songs featuring the facepaint-loving King Diamond, so there’s even money on him making an appearance, as well. Metallica’s biggest songs are represented in the track list (”Enter Sandman,” “Sad But True,” “One”), but there are also a few old gems thrown in for the diehards, including “Dyers Eve,” “The Shortest Straw” and “Hit the Lights,” the first song the band ever wrote and released. The XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game — which will be sold stand-alone, so players will already need the rest of the Guitar Hero gear — will be released on March 29. For Rolling Stone’s hands-on preview of the game, check out our Sneak Peek: Guitar Hero: Metallica. Related Stories: • Metallica Reveal Guitar Hero Track List • Have Guitar Hero and Rock Band Peaked?

Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Judas Priest Prove Their Metal Mastery on Long IslandWhen two of the singers who most define the genre are in the house, calling a tour featuring Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Motorhead the “Metal Masters Tour” doesn’t have even a hint of hyperbole. The ashen skies threatened to open at any moment at Long Island’s Jones Beach Theater on Sunday, but even though lightning crackled in the distance during Judas Priest’s night-closing set, the evening remained dry. The band only pulled out one song from this year’s Nostradamus, so the rest of the set was dedicated to the glory days of yore. Apart from the old standbys (”Breaking the Law,” “Metal Gods,” “Hell Bent for Leather”), the deeper cuts provided some of the evening’s finer moments, especially a thunderous rendition of “Dissident Aggressor” and “Hell Patrol,” an unjustly forgotten number from the Painkiller album. Though the ticket read “Heaven and Hell,” a Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath is still Black Sabbath. Guitarist Tony Iommi appeared in great spirits, cracking a huge smile while carving out the jagged solo on “I” (some of those Dehumanizer tracks are a lot better than you may remember). Dio was in fantastic voice, sounding more like one-third of his alleged 66 years, especially on “Children of the Sea” and “Heaven and Hell,” the set’s closing number. As always, Motorhead was Motorhead, and that’s all it takes. From a breakneck “Going to Brazil” to “Killed By Death” and the unstoppable closing one-two punch of “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill,” Lemmy Kilmister’s gravel throat has retained every bit of its charm, and his band is still top-notch. The only downer of the evening is that the audience skewed so far towards the older side, as kids with heavy metal dreams would be well advised to sign up for an evening of education and learn from the best. Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi Sues Live Nation For Copyright InfringementPhoto: Kane/Getty Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has sued Live Nation after the concert giant sold merchandise using the band’s logo after their contract had expired. Live Nation bought merchandise company Signatures in 2007 for $79 million. Unfortunately for Live Nation, however, Black Sabbath’s contract with Signatures expired in 2006, and Tony Iommi reclaimed the band’s trademark. Live Nation and Signatures, Iommi alleges, continued to sell over 100 items of merchandise featuring the band’s likeness, name and logo. Iommi says he sent a letter to the companies in April, asking them to stop selling their merchandise. They didn’t, so now the guitarist has taken it to court, asking for damages in the amount of three times the profits from the merchandise sales, plus a halt to the Black Sabbath product sales. Live Nation has declined to comment on the case. However this ends up, it’s safe to assume that if Black Sabbath should ever reunite with Ozzy Osbourne, Ticketmaster will likely handle the ticket sales. Metallica In The Studio: Working Hard, Air Drumming The big news in Metallica land, according to a message on the band’s official Web site, is that “there is nothing new to report.” Oh, we disagree. Judging by the pictures posted yesterday on their Web page, the San Francisco metal gods are hard at work on their ninth album, the follow-up to 2003’s St. Anger. The photos show Lars Ulrich air-drumming in the recording room, a shaven James Hetfield thrashing about, wearing a Motörhead shirt. The band assures fans: “Work is continuing and all is good in the Metallica hood.” Matt Sorum of Velvet Revolver, a friend of Ulrich’s, recently heard prospective songs and told Rolling Stone that “It’s ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast.” There’s still no indication of when the Rick Rubin-produced album will finally be completed, but it’s nice to have proof of progress.
