Disco de Nada Surf: “Karmic”
Descripción (en inglés) :
Nada Surf: Aaron Conte, Daniel Lorca, Matthew Caws.

Recording information: 1993.

Originally issued in the mid-1990s and re-released after 2005's lauded THE WEIGHT IS A GIFT, the KARMIC EP offers up a portrait of Nada Surf in its formative stage, before the New York City-based power-pop band made the leap to a major label (for '96's HIGH/LOW) during the alt-rock boom. With its relatively lo-fi production and restless energy, KARMIC highlights Nada Surf's punchy, guitar-driven attack more than frontman Matthew Caws's earnest charm or keen songcraft (see the surging "Telescope" and the revved-up "Treehouse," a track that would also appear on HIGH/LOW), making it perhaps better suited for diehard fans than latter-day converts.

- For Long Time Fans
With Nada Surf's success over the past 5 years, they've rereleased their first EP, Karmic. Because of the band's evolution over the years, I would only recommend this EP to the band's oldest fans. It's slightly edgier with fewer pop sensibilities than their most recent releases (The Weight Is A Gift, Lucky). In terms of style, it closely aligns to High/Low.
Karmic is a post-grudge alternative recording and I love it for this. If you've been listening to Nada Surf since their MTV days in the mid nineties, this recording is for you. If not, the songs are still good, but don't expect it to be exactly the same as their newest stuff.

- Great EP
This is their debut EP and is pretty good. The first song, "Telescope" is probably their oldest song judging from the style of it to their current style, but it isn't bad, semi-heavy. The 2nd song is "Sea Knows When." This is BY FAR the best song on the album, with a catchy melody and great vocals. The 3rd song is "Everybody Lies," a slower song that isn't one of their better songs in my opinion. The 4th song is "Treehouse," which is the original version of the rerecorded single on their 2nd album Hi-Low. This version has more snare drum and some differnt guitar effects and isn't quite as good as the rerecorded version, but good nonetheless. The last song is called "Nothing" and is the heaviest one on the album. It has some distortion at the beggining and isn't really too catchy, but not terrible. Anyhow, buy this album if you are a Nada Surf fan.

- good stuff!
I just picked up this album recently, definately a must have if you are a fan of nada surf's earlier stuff. In my opinion a few of these songs are some of the best nada surf I have heard in YEARS. I cant stop listening to Telescope and Pressure Free.

- Karmic EP being rereleased
Good news for people who love Nada Surf - this EP is being rereleased on Hi-Speed Soul Records with a bonus track ("Pressure Free") and is due June 12, 2006 on CD and limited edition vinyl. Keep yer eyes peeled.
Rumor has it we're in store for a new full length in the fall. :) Hooray.
- Good OLD Nada Surf
When I bought this I thought it was a new EP, but when it arrived I realized it was a re-issue of a 90's era release. No matter, it's good music (the only kind Nada Surf makes) and is a must have for any NS fan.
