On the Charts: Jack Johnson Rides Wave to Big Debut, Top Spot The Big News: Jack Johnson! Johnson’s new album Sleep Through the Static easily had the biggest-selling debut of 2008, moving 374,619 copies to cruise to the top spot on the Billboard charts. Johnson more than quadrupled the sales of the number two album, Sheryl Crow’s Detours. Last week’s top album, Alicia Keys’ As I Am, fell to number three, while Lenny Kravitz’s It Is Time For a Love Revolution debuted at four. The 2008 Grammy Nominees compilation rounded out the top five. Debuts: After the Johnson/Crow/Kravitz trifecta, the next highest debut was k.d. lang’s Watershed at number eight. Nada Surf’s new album Lucky came in at eighty-one. On the indie tip, Hot Chip’s Made in the Dark entered at 108 and Bob Mould’s District Line placed at 190. Last Week’s Heroes: The Mars Volta’s Bedlam in Goliath sank from its number three debut to slot number fifty-one in its sophomore week. Last week’s number two, the Juno soundtrack, fell to six to make room for the debuts. Next week, we’ll find out if Grammy wins helped boost the stock of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black (twenty-four this week), Kanye West’s Graduation (sixty-four this week) and Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters (currently at 158). 50 Cent Bonds With Boxers, New UNKLE Album To Be Collaboration Heavy, Cat Power Plots Another Covers Album 50 Cent was all over this weekend’s Mayweather/De La Hoya fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Here he is chatting with Mayweather during the post-fight news conference after it was decided that Mayweather defeated De La Hoya. It might be easier to list those artists who are NOT going to be a part of the new UNKLE album. Josh Homme, Ian Astbury, Massive Attack’s 3D, Autolux, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, Jeordie White, and the Duke Spirit are among those who will be contributing to War Stories, which comes out July 24th. The Police will descend upon Vancouver this week, whereupon they will start rehearsing etc. for their reunion tour, Billboard reports. The tour ticks off May 28th. “It’s feeling really good,” guitarist Andy Summers said. “It should take a slightly different shape now because in a couple weeks the stage arrives and the lighting and everything and we have to kind of choreograph the show with that. We’ve all been playing for another 20 years, so I think we’re actually much better players than we were even in the Police in the early days.” The new Cat Power album will apparently cover songs by Dylan, Hank Williams, Aretha Franklin, OTis Redding, Kitty Wells, Duke Ellington, and Fairport Convention on her next album. A record composed entirely of new material will follow. [via Stereogum] Kid Rock has a generous streak. After six sets of golf clubs were stolen from a Detroit-area girl’s high school gold team, Rock decided to purchase new custom golf clubs too replace the stolen ones.
