Nazareth is always going to be one of those under appreciated bands even tho' they had loads of great songs and more hits then many realized. In the US they are pretty much only known for "Love Hurts" and to a lesser extent "Hair of the Dog" (AKA "Son of a Bitch"). Those 2 US singles are the only things average Americans know of Nazareth, but in the UK the Naz had tons o hits, most of 'em chart toppers too. This 3 disc set is a nice way to learn more about Nazareth, being a retrospective of sorts, giving you every single they ever released from the debut in 71' up to 94's "Move Me". But this isn't that much different from the countless Greatest Hits, Best Ofs and collections that already exist for this band, we have enough of those. At least we get to see some songs off 2xS, Sound Elixir, The Catch and Cinema get some attention, as non have appeared on any Nazareth collection yet and those CDs are either out of print or unreleased in America. There is also a cool German version of 'Morning Dew" and some stuff of off Dan's two solo albums...
I wish they would just release the proper studio albums domestically here instead of more anthologies and collections... Those import prices are ridiculous. My biggest gripe is the packaging. It's a "box" set but the actual box is no bigger in dimension then a CD. You open up the box and find the 3 discs are housed in paper sleeves, ouch. Paper sleeves are horrible because they wear out quickly and they scuff and scratch the surface of the discs when you pull them in and out. In fact my disc were already scuffed up when I "carefully" pulled them out and they were brand new. The booklet was nice, full of memorabilia, sleeve art work for all the 7 inches they put out and info of chart position stuff, ect.
The music itself is 5 stars. But this really isn't that much to write home about, most of the songs here appear on the many Naz collections out there already, the packaging was cheap, and for the price it really just makes me want to buy one of the import full album releases 'sted o this. If you just want all the big hits of Nazareth then you can't really go wrong here. It's nice for collectors too if that's your thing.
I have been a life long lover of old school Nazareth and this CD set has some great songs on the first CD, but from there it goes down for me. On the next two CDs there is only one song that I liked. "Gone down train". The rest of the songs are pretty much from raygay to pop. Which isn't what I think of when I think of Nazareth. I should have saved my money and bought three older Nazareth CDs.
