Instead of the low-key electronic chill-out that often fits the BACK TO MINE bill, New Order have brought together a list of innovators and influences that span the stylistic gamut. Downbeat is not the dominant mode here (the disc opens up with Captain Beefheart's "Big Eyed Beans from Venus," for God's sake), and rock experimentalism is given its rightful crown via tracks from Can ("Mushroom"), The Velvet Underground ("Venus in Furs"), and Roxy Music ("In Every Dream Home a Heartache"). <p>As one would expect from these Manchester New Wave pioneers, however, dance, hip-hop, and acid house are given their due, with cuts from Mantronix, Missy Elliot, Donna Summer, and Joey Beltram, among others. Beyond these superb selections, New Order has thrown some curveballs, including garage bliss from The Groundhogs ("Cherry Red") and a melancholic beauty from Doves ("M62 Song"). The transitions are flawless, and the high-caliber picks and smooth flow of the set attest to New Order's deserved reputation as pop-culture tastemakers.
