You can even order an action figure of the 3D character you built to faux-shred your way through Guns N’ Roses’ “Shackler’s Revenge.” After uploading your in-game band’s logo using the new Photo Creator, you can order a T-shirt, keychain or bumper sticker bearing the emblem, all in an attempt to further enhance your gameplay. If you’re really committed to your character, you can make him the envy of all your GI Joes by ordering the $69 figurine, created specifically using your personalized in-game avatar and complete with customizable posing. Check out more info at the Rock Band specialty store. Besides, spending $29 on the T-shirt of a band you created in a video game will make you forget all about that so-called economic meltdown. Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Getty Metallica capped off Death Magnetic week with a spot on our front cover and a siege to the top of the charts. We talked to Lars about Napster, James about opening for the Rolling Stones, witnessed the band’s tiny BBC show, went behind-the-scenes on the cover shoot and engaged the argument over whether the Guitar Hero version of the album sounded better than the CD. We put Wish You Were Here on repeat to bid goodbye to Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, who passed away after a brief battle with cancer. We also paid tribute to Motown producer Norman Whitfield and Infinite Jest genius and one-time Rolling Stone writer David Foster Wallace. We called in a few favors in order to catch concerts like Sigur Ros in New York, David Byrne rummaging the Byrne/Eno catalog and Patti Smith at Fashion Week. Plus, Paul McCartney talked about his upcoming first-ever concert in Israel. We caught up with the three members of the Ben Folds Five to talk about their reunion, then watched the trio perform The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Album Preview: Fall Out Boy Explore Soul, Baseball on “Folie A Deux”This morning, Fall Out Boy dropped by the RS offices to feed us breakfast and play a few tracks off their upcoming album, Folie A Deux (out November 4th). On their fifth disc, the guys pump out chunky, Eighties-inspired riffs and lung-busting choruses sure to hook anyone who’s not already a FOB fan. “I must confess, I’m in love with my own sins,” Patrick Stump sings on “America’s Sweethearts,” a strutting, tongue-in-cheek ode to narcissism that cops Beatle-esque harmonies. (A snippet of the song was on FOB’s recent Welcome to the New Administration mixtape.) Another standout track was “Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown,” a dark, New Order-reminiscent stomp about an unfaithful chick. (The title originally name-dropped Pete Rose, but the band was discouraged because of the lawsuit brought against OutKast over the reference to Rosa Parks in the title of an Aquemini single. This bums Pete Wentz out: “I wanted to see Pete Rose in Cooperstown,” he says. “I was all about it.”) Stump shows off his soul chops on the cut, belting, “Does he know the way the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?” before ripping into the defiant refrain: “I will never end up like him.” After the listening session, we asked the blog-happy Wentz for some tips on improving RollingStone.com. “I’m absolutely the wrong guy to ask,” he admitted sheepishly. “I put the wrong stuff on the Internet.” Related Stories: • New Fall Out Boy Video Derailed by Product Placement Controversy • Album Review: Fall Out Boy, Infinity On High • Fall Out Boy: The Boys With the Car Crash Hearts

Fans who pre-order the disc now, however, will receive a download of the digital version for free. Gadget Envy: “Rock Band 2″Photo: MTV Games What It Is: The sequel to last year’s excellent Rock Band, the game that kicked the music video game arms race up a notch by adding drums and a microphone. Who It’s For: Anybody who loved the first game or anybody looking to finally jump in, as the total experience finally justifies the price tag. Why It’s Worthy: Most video game sequels are simple rehashes of what came before, but in the case of Rock Band 2, that’s exactly what was needed. The new game provides more of everything: more songs, more characters and more unlockables. Best of all is the easy compatibility. Got songs you downloaded for the first game? They’re all playable. Want to play the songs included on the first game without switching discs? You can import all those songs (for a one-time fee of 5 bucks). All the instruments from the first game work, but those looking to upgrade will find more fluid-feeling guitars and quieter drums. Our Only Complaint: It’s not much of a complaint, but the scattered release schedule is odd. The game is currently out for XBox 360, though the bundle containing the new instruments doesn’t hit stores until October 19 (the same day it appears for PlayStation 3). Wii users have to wait another month after that. Cost/Where to Get It: $59.99 for the game only, $189.99 for the bundle with drums, a microphone and a guitar. Check out order and pre-order info at the official Rock Band store.

News Ticker: The Killers, Jonas Brothers, “American Idol”The Killers have reportedly named their third album Day And Age. The album — produced by Confessions on a Dance Floor’s Stuart Price — borrows its name from a lyric in one of the band’s new songs, “Neon Tiger.” The album is due out in November. RS cover boys Jonas Brothers said that they’re up for a sequel to their massively-successful TV movie Camp Rock. A Disney Channel spokeswoman confirmed that a sequel was in development. With Mark Ronson in the producer’s seat, the Kaiser Chiefs will release their new record Off With Their Heads on October 13th in the UK. Lily Allen will appear on the Chiefs’ third album. American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is reportedly scaling back his participation on the next season of AI in order to help launch So You Think You Can Dance in other countries. [Photo: Getty]

Radiohead Break Out Covers of Smiths, New Order During Webcast Even though Radiohead slam-dunked their version of Björk’s “Unravel” during last night’s Webcast, it’s become apparent that the band has not got covers completely out of their system. We’re one hour into tonight’s live telecast, and have already enjoyed two covers: The Smiths’ “The Headmaster Ritual” and, for your viewing pleasure above, New Order’s “Ceremony.” The band also mixed in live versions of their own “Reckoner” (the debut performance of its current incarnation) and “Faust Arp,” which was previously recorded and performed in a field with singer Thom Yorke and guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Between performances, the bandmembers have taken turns DJing (who knew drummer Phil Selway loved him some Iron & Wine?) and broadcasting Stanley Donwood animation as well as hilarious skits, like the Se7en-themed music video for “15 Step.” To join in, head over to www.radiohead.tv.

Christina Aguilera Collapses, Nine Inch Nails Hit Paperwork Snafu, Pearl Jam Announce Live DVD Christina Aguilera canceled two concert dates after collapsing backstage from a “flu.” Backstage whispers say Aguilera has been “letting out her costumes” to accommodate her ever-growing stomach, fueling those pregnancy rumors. Nine Inch Nails’ planned tour of Russia has been called off due to an error filling out visas, thus forcing Russians to get their murderous, satanic lyrics elsewhere. Peter Hook is threatening to sue the rest of New Order if they go all Roger Waters vs. Pink Floyd on him. Creation Records founder Alan McGee has lashed out at former label cash cow My Bloody Valentine, calling the band “bloody nonsense … my way of seeing how far I can push hype.” Pearl Jam are adding to their plentiful library of live performances by releasing Immagine Nel Telaio, a concert DVD from their 2006 Italian tour, on September 25th. Guns N’ Roses’ Early Days: Exclusive Photos From ‘Reckless Road’ Author Marc Canter The new book Reckless Road by Marc Canter — an amateur photographer and owner of L.A.’s famed Canter’s Deli — documents Guns N’ Roses’ early years via never-before-seen photos and lots of memorabilia. Canter, who was a childhood friend of Saul Hudson (also known as Slash) was just a teenager when he began shooting photos of his friends’ band. Canter was there, snapping away at GN’R’s first show on June 6, 1985 and he and his camera followed the band’s every subsequent move. The book, which came out Friday, can be ordered with one of six custom covers featuring Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven or a full band shot. Gnarls Barkley Headline 150th MySpace Secret Show in NYC “It is extremely hot,” said Cee-Lo Green from the stage of the Filmore at Irving Plaza in New York City last night. He wasn’t kidding. Show-goers who stumbled from the main floor into the hallway in search of precious fresh air looked like they’d just stepped out of a swimming pool — hair matted, clothes soaked straight through. The occasion was the 150th MySpace Secret Show, an event that — bizarrely — paired Green’s band Gnarls Barkley with brutal New York math rock outfit Battles. Like all MySpace Secret Shows, there was no way to purchase tickets for the event. Interested parties had to add the Secret Show profile to their MySpace “Top 8″ in order to receive instructions on where and when to pick up the wristbands that gained them complimentary admission to the show. “I want to give these kids memories,” explained MySpace music editor Isac Walter. “These shows are designed for me, as a kid. If my favorite band was playing for free, in a venue like Irving Plaza instead of Madison Square Garden, fuck yeah, I’d stand in line.” By the looks of the crowd — capped, Walter said, at 1,050 — a lot of people shared his sentiment. The larger question was how two headliners so musically polarized would appeal to the sweltering crowd. “I honestly don’t get it,” laughed Battles fan Nadia Standard, 26. “The bands are from two different worlds. I’m curious to see how the 16-year-old Gnarls fans and the musichead Battles fans interact.” Seth Dukes, 22, felt differently. “I think it totally fits,” he said. “Battles is ‘out there,’ Gnarls is ‘out there.’ Both bands are, musically, on the edge.” As it turned out, he was right. Though their initial squall of feedback may have disoriented some attendees, almost everyone was won over by the end of their manic set. Gnarls Barkley, needless to say, didn

Megadeth, In Flames, High On Fire Ground and Pound at Gigantour in New York The third installment of Gigantour, Dave Mustaine’s traveling metal circus, had its first of two sold-out shows at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom last night. Never one to blow an entrance, Mustaine opened Megadeth’s set standing alone onstage, ripping into “Sleepwalker,” the first cut from last year’s United Abominations. From then on, the order of business was to thrash as hard as possible for ninety minutes, with items on the agenda including a blistering “Take No Prisoners” and a sneer-heavy “Symphony of Destruction.” Mustaine’s ginger mop doesn’t bob as much as it used to, but his chops were still there — impressive for a guy who had to essentially re-learn his instrument five years ago after suffering nerve damage. The big revelation of the night was newly added lead guitarist Chris Broderick, who made trading shred-heavy lines with Mustaine on “Hangar 18″ seem like child’s play. And speaking of children, the 1984 mullets several attendees forced upon their spawn likely qualify as a form of child abuse. Bouncing back from a pair of albums that were light on memorable moments, Sweden’s In Flames performed a handful of vicious songs from their latest, A Sense of Purpose. Diehard fans gnashed their teeth at the dearth of pre-2000 material, but new songs “The Mirror’s Truth” and “Disconnected” featured enough bite to grab newer ears and likely won back a few of the old ones. Most attendees in the massive line missed an impressive — if unpleasantly early — set from Oakland’s High on Fire, who conjure up as much blood and thunder as Mastodon and do it with only three guys. Phoenix-based youthful Internet buzz band (7 million MySpace views!) Job for a Cowboy followed by showing off solid technical proficiency and was the night’s most straightforwardly brutal act, suggesting the band could become pretty noteworth

In the Studio: The Hold Steady From October 2006 to November 2007, the Hold Steady played nearly 250 shows behind their third album, Boys and Girls in America. Along the way, the quintet saw their crowds mushroom in size, heard their music featured on a Super Bowl telecast and got to jam with Bruce Springsteen at a Carnegie Hall benefit concert. “Bruce said, ‘Does anyone know the lyrics to ‘Rosalita’?” frontman Craig Finn recalls. “I said, ‘I do!’ I sang the first verse, then finished with him. It was surreal.” The band celebrated its success by going right back to work. The Hold Steady have nearly finished their new album, tentatively titled Stay Positive, and it’s full of their trademark sweaty grooves, visceral riffs and slightly soused shout-along choruses. But there are a few changes. For one, Stay Positive is more tuneful than the previous three discs: “Ask Her for Some Adderall” is one of the catchiest things the Hold Steady have ever done, and the slow-burning “Discouraged” evokes the Stones. This increased tunefulness is thanks largely to Finn: The gruff-voiced vocalist recently started taking singing lessons. “It helped ensure my voice doesn’t run out of gas so quickly,” he says. “And they made me less afraid to try new things.” The album is also more expansive: The fivesome tossed in mandolin and talk-box solos, and spent more time layering guitar parts. On “Constructive Summer,” they built a rip-roaring groove around harpsichord lines. Whether or not Stay Positive pushes the Hold Steady to greater success, the guys seem happy to be where they are, especially since they’ve been able to cut down on part-time work while not on tour. “Right now, we’re able to live off the band — or get close,” says lead guitarist Tad Kubler. “But we have to work at it. In order to be good, you can’t half-ass it.” [Photograph by Lucy

Rolling Stones “Shine a Light” on Universal, Tenure With EMI Likely Over The Rolling Stones have signed a one-album deal with Universal Music Group for the release of their next album, the live soundtrack to Martin Scorsese’s concert film Shine a Light. The Universal deal likely spells the end of the Stones’ sixteen-year partnership with EMI, as the band’s record contract with that label expires next month. If they do sign a long-term deal with another label, the Stones would join Paul McCartney and Radiohead as the latest big-name artist to exit EMI in the wake of their tumultuous takeover by private equity firm Terra Firma. Earlier this week, EMI head Guy Hands announced that the label would allow for the corporating sponsoring of bands, as well as cut 1,500-2,000 jobs in order to free up $400 million. Still-contracted EMI artists like Robbie Williams, the Verve and Coldplay hinted at withholding new albums until EMI proved they were capable of appropriately promoting and distributing those releases. Scorsese filmed Shine A Light during two Stones gigs at New York City’s relatively intimate Beacon Theatre in 2006. Among the special guests who joined the band on stage were Jack White and Christina Aguilera. The film will debut at the Berlin Film Festival next month before hitting American cinemas on April 4th. Led Zeppelin: The Full Report From David Fricke For the second encore of their first full concert in twenty-seven years, at London’s 02 arena last night, Led Zeppelin tore into “Rock and Roll,” from their untitled fourth album, with a joyful vengeance. As drummer Jason Bonham hammered with the ghostly precision and ferocity of his late father, guitarist Jimmy Page fired dirty chunks of Chuck Berry and bassist John Paul Jones kept iron time with familiar reserve, singer Robert Plant sang the most obvious words of the night: “Been a long time since I rock and rolled.” Overhead, images of a much younger Zeppelin, in concert during the early and mid-Seventies, flashed on a huge digital-video screen. In those films, Led Zeppelin were the biggest, loudest and most cocksure band in rock. Jimmy Page’s now snow-white hair was still jet black; Robert Plant was a golden god, not yet a Viking elder, and the late John Bonham — whose death in 1980 abruptly ended Zeppelin’s reign — still ruled the engine room. But the band that played underneath those memories last night was not the one that misfired at Live Aid in 1985 or again in New York in 1988. This one was rehearsed, ready and out to kill. This band was Led Zeppelin in every way. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham the Younger opened their two-hour show with the confident wit and colossal nerve of “Good Times Bad Times,” the first song on Led Zeppelin’s 1969 debut album. Even before Plant opened his mouth, the original fury — a surprisingly lean, dub-like crossfire of cannonshot chords, frantic, gulping bass runs and polyrhythmic swagger — was in order and in force. “In the days of my youth/I was told what it means to be a man,” Plant sang, in the slightly lower register of someone who gives those lessons now. It was an appropriate effect, too — an admission of age delivered with feral pride — on a night dedicated to the memory of Zeppelin’s late friend and mentor, Atlantic Records’ co-founder

A Mostly Reunited Van Halen Hit Madison Square Garden There were plenty of reasons to be skeptical walking into last night’s Van Halen concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In no particular order: founding bassist Michael Anthony has been kicked to the curb in favor of Eddie Van Halen’s sixteen-year-old son Wolfgang, David Lee Roth’s vocals have sounded more than a bit shaky in recent years and Ed has done little in these past few years except go to rehab and write scores for porn flicks. Yet when the curtain dropped and the band burst into a note-perfect “You Really Got Me” it became clear this was somehow going to work. It was hard to know where to look first when the show began: a shockingly well-preserved Ed ripping into his guitar, Dave frantically waving a red flag and grinning like a killer clown or Wolfgang, standing confidently on the side of the stage, playing a set consisting entirely of songs written at least seven years before he was born. Ultimately Dave — who reveled in every moment onstage — won out. His voice didn’t sound like it was still 1984, but his vocals were significantly stronger than we’d expected. His signature karate kicks weren’t as high as they used to be and he flubbed his share of lyrics (you’d think he’d at least remember “Pretty Woman”), but his boundless enthusiasm made up for everything. From 1985 until 2004 Van Halen fans had to wade through endless Sammy Hagar (or, worse, Gary Cherone) songs to get to a handful of Roth-era classics — and even when they came, some other guy was singing them. It was barely tolerable, but it was the only Van Halen we had. On this tour, the events from 1985 to the present have been erased. What remains are what Dave has called “favorites that you’ve been hearing tearing out of the back of a pick-up at the Burger King drive-thru for how many summertimes.” The only problem was that the arena sound system sounded like it was composed of 10,000 pick-up trucks taken from the Burger King drive-thru. Maybe it was just where we
