Rock Tours Target China, Face Government InterferenceLast september, 30,000 people gathered in
Beijing's Chaoyang Park to hear sets by Nine Inch Nails, Public
Enemy and the New York Dolls, at the third annual Beijing Pop
Festival. The show — as well as other recent performances by
acts like the Rolling Stones and Linkin Park — seemed to be a
sign of China's increasing comfort with Western pop culture. That
all changed when Björk was booked in Shanghai in March —
and finished her set with the defiant song "Declare Independence"
before trying to lead the crowd in a chant of "Tibet! Tibet!"

News Ticker: Kanye and “Family Guy,” The New York Dolls, “American Idol”Photo: Kambouris/WireImage Kanye West will lend his voice to the upcoming Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show, playing a small-time rapper named Kenny West. “We just recorded him in the booth and he was fantastic. Once he read it a couple times through, he just owned the character,” executive producer Richard Appel told People. “He said he’d be glad to [come back again]. I said we could write him in to the next 21 episodes!” West’s episode will air Spring 2010. The New York Dolls announced their new album Cause I Sez So will be released on May 4th. The LP was recorded by Todd Rundgren, who produced the band’s 1973 self-titled debut. The album will also feature a new recording of their 1973 song “Trash.” We’ll be streaming a new song from Cause I Sez So in our Spring Album Preview, so be sure to check back tomorrow. American Idol has linked up with Upper Deck to produce a line of AI contestant trading cards, Billboard.biz reports. The 138-card line will feature everyone from past champs like Kelly Clarkson to memorable losers like William Hung. Six autographed cards signed by unspecified Idols will also be snuck into packs, which go on sale April 21st.

New Reviews: Conor Oberst, St. Vincent, New York Dolls and MoreLeading the charge of new releases this week is Conor Oberst, who once again drops his Bright Eyes moniker for his second album in two years, Outer South. Backed by the Mystic Valley Band, Outer South finds Oberst sharing songwriting duties for the first time in his prolific career, resulting in an album that’s more freewheeling and adventurous than its folk-rock predecessor. Among the highlights on Outer South, which earned a three-and-a-half star review in Rolling Stone, is the Eagles-esque “S

New Reviews: The Prodigy, JJ Cale, K’Naan, Papa RoachThe guys who played electronica like they were rock stars in the ’90s grow old, start getting clumsy and uninspired… Hey, just like real rock stars do! Not even the march of time can stop these guys from creating a constant stream of pummeling, vacuous rave noise — which writer Will Hermes says is “useful mainly for thrash dancing and scaring neighbors.” • The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die The great 16th album from JJ Cale comes just in time to influence country blues rockers like M. Ward. Still sticking to his guns at 70, he might even be the model for indie-rock longevity. • JJ Cale - Roll On Somalia-raised, Toronto-based rapper K’naan thinks like Bob Marley, flows like Eminem and mixes African music with conscious hip-hop, unabashed pop and even metal. • K’Naan - Troubadour Sloppy Atlanta “flower punk” band Black Lips clean themselves up for their fifth album, biting the 13th Floor Elevators and singing about the New York Dolls. • Black Lips - 200 Million Thousand One of indie rock’s great also-rans, Clem Snide returns with an album that’s simultaneously edgy and refined. • Clem Snide - Barracuda Intrepid Mexican electronic band Kinky return for their fourth album and still get the party started, even if it’s with ham-fisted chants and mash-ups • Kinky - Barracuda Virginia extreme metal powerhouse Lamb of God delve into grooves and tunes on their sixth album. They change their model, they still stick to an old blueprint. • Lamb Of God - Wrath Papa Roach hasn’t been a rap-rock band for a little while now. But what exactly are they? • Papa Roach - Metamorphosis All Rolling Stone album reviews
