"Sleeping Sun" is a gorgeous single from symphonic metal band Nightwish. Though this single can be a little dull since it only includes three versions of the same song, "Sleeping Sun" is an absolutely gorgeous song.
This single includes the original song that was recorded in 2000 to be included on the "Four Ballads of the Eclipse" EP, which was released to commemorate a solar eclipse that occurred in Europe. The song was re-recorded and re-released in 2005 as part of the "Highest Hopes," a best of compilation of Nightwish songs -the full version and a live version of the song are included here.
Listening to both versions, there isn't much of a different. The music sounds exactly the same to me, but the only difference lies in Tarja's vocal style. The 2005 version is a little less operatic, and really features the more "Once"-era style of Tarja's voice with less emphasis on traditional opera.
A beautiful song, "Sleeping Sun" is one of the most powerful ballads Nightwish has ever recorded.
