KILLERS ASK: 'ARE WE HUMAN?'THE meta-analysis of the media can make certain works of art seem plain silly. Case in point: The pivotal line from the Killers' single "Human," from the band's most recent album, "Day & Age." It asks the widely reviled (at least in the...

The Killers Inside: Rolling in Vegas With Brandon FlowersPhotograph by Max Vadukul Brandon Flowers is having trouble explaining himself. Maybe it’s because nothing about him adds up: a couture-wearing synth-pop fanatic who wants to be Bruce Springsteen; a devout Mormon who sings in a decadent Las Vegas rock band. Maybe it’s because when Flowers talks, he tends to get in trouble — like when he bragged that Sam’s Town, the previous album from his band, the Killers, was “one of the best albums in the last 20 years” before anyone heard it. Or maybe it’s because, as the Killers prepare to release their third album, Day & Age, he’s still not sure what kind of band they are. “Every day, I change,” says Flowers. “One day I want to be dead serious, and the next I just want to write great pop songs and have fun. I don’t have any kind of clear direction. I don’t know if I’d want to.” He sighs. “I don’t even know why people want to talk to me.” Read the rest of Brian Hiatt’s feature from the current issue of Rolling Stone here: • The Killers Inside: Rolling in Vegas With Brandon Flowers, the Biggest, Most Insecure Mormon Rock Star Ever

News Ticker: The Killers, Jonas Brothers, “American Idol”The Killers have reportedly named their third album Day And Age. The album — produced by Confessions on a Dance Floor’s Stuart Price — borrows its name from a lyric in one of the band’s new songs, “Neon Tiger.” The album is due out in November. RS cover boys Jonas Brothers said that they’re up for a sequel to their massively-successful TV movie Camp Rock. A Disney Channel spokeswoman confirmed that a sequel was in development. With Mark Ronson in the producer’s seat, the Kaiser Chiefs will release their new record Off With Their Heads on October 13th in the UK. Lily Allen will appear on the Chiefs’ third album. American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is reportedly scaling back his participation on the next season of AI in order to help launch So You Think You Can Dance in other countries. [Photo: Getty]

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily • Rock & roll icon Bo Diddley died at the age of 79. Billy Gibbons, George Thorogood and Buddy Guy all remembered the creator of the Bo Diddley Beat. • It was another week of Metallica madness, as the band previewed six songs from their new album to positive response and were honored with their very own Guitar Hero. • The prosecution rested at the R. Kelly trial and the defense went to work, attacking key witnesses, alleging extortion, calling music journalists to the stand and asking “Where’s the mole?” • We continued our Guitar Heroes coverage, as Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and John Mayer all told us their secrets. We also asked our readers to tell us their Greatest Guitar Songs list.

Beatles Manager and Mentor Neil Aspinall Passes Away Neil Aspinall, the Beatles’ first road manager and head of the band’s Apple Corps for four decades, passed away in New York at age 66. Considered by many to be “the real fifth Beatle,” Aspinall was a childhood friend of George Harrison and Paul McCartney who left his job as an accountant to become the band’s first roadie, driver, spotlight operator and confidante. Later, after Brian Epstein’s passing in 1967, Aspinall became the head of Apple Corps, spearheading the marketing of the Beatles for forty years. Aspinall was most notably responsible for the wildly successful Anthology project and the recent Cirque du Soleil tribute show LOVE. In a statement today, McCartney, Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison said, “Neil’s trusting stewardship and guidance has left a far-reaching legacy for generations to come. All his friends and loved ones will greatly miss him but will always retain the fondest memories of a great man.”

Arctic Monkeys Side Project The Last Shadow Puppets Arrive in NYC Though no one could quite remember the name of the band, a few dozen New Yorkers showed up at Brooklyn’s Sound Fix Lounge last night for a “surprise” acoustic gig by the Last Shadow Puppets: a collaboration between Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner and his mate Miles Kane from U.K. group the Rascals. The pair worked through unplugged renditions of eight songs from their forthcoming album to a crowd that included Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Rostam Batmanglij. (VW fans will be pleased to know that drummer Chris Thompson is doing just fine after being hit by a taxi in London last week. “He didn’t even need stitches,” Batmanglij says.) The Puppets’ set was decidedly low-key, coming on more like noir-ish Sixties soundtrack music than the loose-limbed Brit-punk of the Arctic Monkeys. Or, as one astute fan noted: “If the Arctic Monkeys are Blur, this is the Good, The Bad and The Queen.” The duo’s debut album, The Age Of Understatement, is due out April 21st, if that sounds like your cup of tea. For our part, we were impressed. [Photo: Bao Nguyen]

News Ticker: Van Halen, Jeff Healey, Wal-Mart and Juvenile Van Halen have canceled a handful of recent dates, and now TMZ claims the band’s entire tour — scheduled to run until April 19th — has been called off due to issues with Eddie Van Halen. TMZ cites sources and recent live footage. The band has yet to comment. Canadian guitarist Jeff Healey died yesterday at age forty-one, two months shy of releasing his first album in eight years. Healey picked up the guitar after being blinded at a young age, and became known for playing his instrument flat on his lap. He was diagnosed with cancer last year and underwent several surgeries. Under a recently proposed five-tier price plan, Wal-Mart could further reduce its CD prices to start at $5, with new releases going for $12. The plan would require labels to cover more of the cost. No discussions between the labels and the retailer have taken place. A teenager in Georgia murdered his mother and two sisters on Friday, one of whom was Juvenile’s four-year-old daughter. The rapper’s manager told the AP, “It really shocked and devastated him to the point where I’ve never seen him before.” [Photo: Getty]
