Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo to Release Solo Demos, Really Long Book OK, so Albumsix.com ended up being (as of now) a bust, but there is new semi-Weezer music to report on. Rivers Cuomo has told seventy-two of his closest friends on his personal MySpace blog that he plans to release, via Geffen Records, a collection of solo demos he recorded between the years 1992 and 2007. You know the MySpace page is legit and not some imposter fan because MySpace founder Tom left a comment on Rivers’ page, and Tom doesn’t leave a comment for just anyone. Alone – The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo will be released, according to Cuomo and confirmed by Geffen, on December 11th. Cuomo was originally planning to issue his first book to coincide with the recordings, but he has separated the two projects. The book, which is nearly 400 pages at this point, will come in at a “much later date — a year? Two years? Three years? I don’t know.” Meanwhile on the Weezer front, there are vague “developments, which are also extremely great.” We reported earlier in the year that the band would likely release their follow-up to 2005’s Make Believe in Spring 2008, so Albumsix.com might be going active in no time. "Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy" by MúmIceland's Múm have travelled stylistic light-years since the baby-toy electronica of 2000's Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK, gradually beefing up their sound over the years with decidedly mixed results. Early sublime moments came when Kristín Valtýsdóttir's wispy melodies drifted into the same make-believe space as Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason's ethereal, glockenspiel-augmented electronics—the results were classic experimental pop in the Icelandic tradition. Múm are now technically a duo (Valtýsdóttir left to make albums with her husband, Animal Collective's Avey Tare), and reappear with their fourth full-length, Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, an album whose many auxiliary contributors allow Tynes and Smárason to inhabit Múm's new identity as a large-ensemble indie-pop band. Rather than forcing their uneven songwriting to the forefront, as on Summer Make Good,

Radiohead Catalog Goes Digital For the First Time, But Not on iTunes All Radiohead albums are now for sale as unrestricted MP3s at the U.K.’s biggest digital outlet, 7digital.com, marking the first time the band has agreed to sell its entire catalog on a major download site. The band continues to reject iTunes — the world’s largest digital outlet — and other services, refusing to make individual tracks available for sale in addition to full albums, something iTunes requires of most artists. At 7Digital.com, users from the U.S. and anywhere in the world can buy all six Radiohead studio albums and live album I Might Be Wrong for seven pounds — about $14 — each, and one of about twenty-two official single releases, bundled with B-sides, for 1.79 pounds, or about $3.60. Individual tracks are not available. The move was a widely expected next step for Radiohead, who previously made full albums available at 7Digital-powered site warchildmusic.com, with a portion of proceeds going to charity, and temporarily made two albums — OK Computer and The Bends — available on iTunes a couple years ago. Last July, Clark Benson, CEO of industry research frim the Almight Institute of Music Retail told Rolling Stone, “Radiohead, by their next release, will probably come to some terms with iTunes.”

Weezer: Album Six In The Works? We were curious/suspicious when we got a tip that the url albumsix.com rerouted to the official Weezer web site, Weezer.com. As many of you know, the band famously went on hiatus following the release of their fifth album, Make Believe. When he graduated from Harvard and got married, we figured we’d heard the last of Rivers Cuomo for at least a little while. But then a solo demo for Cuomo’s song “Pig” leaked. And now, with this cryptic rerouting link, we ask the question: Is a new Weezer album on the horizon? We did some research. According to a domain search, the AlbumSix web site was registered to Interscope Records and not some overzealous Pinkerton fan. The conspiracy theorists will argue “Weezer is on Geffen, not Interscope, duh.” Well, they’re sort of right. Both Geffen and Interscope are bundled under the giant Universal Media Group umbrella, so the plot remains thick. A query to Weezer publicist Jim Merlis resulted in his insistence that “the band didn’t do this [albumsix.com].” Conclusive…but vaguely hopeful. OK, fine, the band didn’t create the page. (Cuomo went to Harvard but we doubt he knows HTML.) But the question remains: Are there signs that Weezer is prepping a new record? They are under contract for two more albums. Either way, we’ll keep you updated as to whether this recent revelation is truth or hoax.

In the Studio: Al Green While visiting his record company in 2005, Roots drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson picked up Loretta Lynn’s 2004 Van Lear Rose album, the singer’s late-career collaboration with Jack White. “I couldn’t stop listening to it,” says Thompson. “I thought, ‘Why can’t that happen on the black side of music?’” He first attempted to work with reclusive soul singer Bill Withers, but an executive at Blue Note Records asked Thompson if he’d be interested in producing Al Green, who was looking to work with a member of the hip-hop community. (Listen to two new Greens tracks, plus watch a behind-the-scenes video about the making of this LP here.) The pair’s first meeting, in 2005 at New York’s Electric Lady Studios, resulted in an epic evening that formed the core of the glorious Lay It Down (out May 27th). “Every time anybody did something else, I turned around and wrote another song,” says Green. “We ended up with eight songs in that one night. I hadn’t had an experience like that, ever!” The band, built around the rhythm section of Thompson and bassist Adam Blackstone and featuring the Dap-King Horns (best known for their work with Amy Winehouse), reconvened seven or eight times to complete the album. The final results — featuring duets with Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and Anthony Hamilton — sound looser, funkier and more emotional than anything Green has released in decades. Green’s last two albums (2003’s I Can’t Stop and 2005’s Everything’s OK) reunited him with producer Willie Mitchell, who led all of his classic sessions for Hi Records in the Seventies. Thompson describes those records as “solid but sonically frustrating,” and says that he had a different ambition for Lay It Down. Noting that new albums from legendary artists tend to go either the standards-filled “Tony Bennett rou

Coldplay To Exit EMI?, Dr. Phil Cancels Britney Episode, OK Go! EP to Benefit New Orleans and More Coldplay seem poised to follow in the footsteps of Paul McCartney and Radiohead by being the latest major act to leave EMI, according to reports. A source close to the band says Chris Martin and co. feel they “don’t necessarily need a label” and want to “see what happens” before re-signing with the company that helped jumpstart their career. Contrary to an earlier announcement, TV psychiatrist Dr. Phil McGraw announced today that he will not dedicate an episode of his syndicated show Dr. Phil to Britney Spears latest turmoil, saying that the “Spears situation is too intense now.” McGraw also promised that the details regarding his weekend visit to Spears’ hospital room will remain confidential. When they’re not fine-tuning their synchronized treadmill routines, OK Go! are practicing philanthropy. The band and New Orleans funk group Bonerama will release a five-song EP called You’re Not Alone exclusively on iTunes on February 5th. The EP will benefit New Orleans musicians displaced by Hurricane Katrina. As if French President Nicolas Sarkozy marrying a French pop star named Carla Bruni wasn’t cool enough, there is now evidence that Sarkozy’s son Pierre is a budding hip-hop producer, having already produced tracks for Mississippi rapper David Banner under the name DJ Mosey. It’s been a bad couple of weeks for hip-hoppers in central Texas. Already having lost Pimp C, the city of Houston was hit with a double-dose of tragedy, as two local rappers died in separate incidents late last week. Eric “O.G. Style” Woods passed away at thirty-seven after suffering an aneurysm, while Arcani Crosswords (née Michael Francis) died at thirty-two from an accidental gunshot wound.
