News Ticker: Voodoo Festival, Velvet Revolver and Live Nation Death Cab for Cutie, Panic at the Disco, Lupe Fiasco and more acts have been added to New Orleans’ Voodoo Festival on October 24-26. Wyclef and Tokyo Police Club also join a lineup that includes headliners Nine Inch Nails, R.E.M. and Stone Temple Pilots. Unknown singers lobbying to be Velvet Revolver’s new vocalist are campaigning on YouTube to get heard. While VR’s Matt Sorum admitted the band has listened to submissions mailed to the band, it’s unknown if the group is using YouTube to recruit a Scott Weiland replacement. According to reports, Live Nation chairman Michael Cohl is currently negotiating his exit from the concert giant. As we reported last week, Cohl had been feuding with Live Nation over the company’s direction. Cohl’s departure may have affected a potential Rolling Stones deal (a contract the band has denied), as Cohl has promoted every Stones tour since 1989. [Photo: Getty]

In addition to the headliners R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots, Death Cab for Cutie, Panic at the Disco, Erykah Badu and N’Awlins prodigal son Lil Waynein will play in the more mainstream Le Ritual section of the festival. Much like the city itself, the Voodoo Festival is split into three distinct sections. The Le Flambeau area will feature music more in tune with the hometown sounds of New Orleans with sets by Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The third section, Le Carnival, will feature a bunch of Big Easy indie bands, burlesque shows and circus acts. It’s like a three-day Mardi Gras over in that Le Carnival section. Panic at the Disco Debut Stripped-Down Set, Sound on Honda Civic Tour There were some jarring product placements at the opening night of Panic at the Disco’s North American outing — even for something called the Honda Civic Tour. Motion City Soundtrack, the Hush Sound and Phantom Planet opened, and between sets automobile commercials alternated with videos from acts on the record label that distributes PATD’s music. (Click here for photos from last night’s show.) The Las Vegas quartet finally took the stage more than two and a half hours after the show began, opening with the salutary “We’re So Starving” and the current hit “Nine in the Afternoon.” The band alternated considerably less aggressive versions of tracks from A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out with stripped-down selections from its elaborate new album Pretty. Odd. Whether it was first-night jitters, a lack of sufficient rehearsal time, or the simple fact that their music is dependent on dozens of overdubs both from themselves and a myriad of outside players, Panic’s live presence was decidedly tentative. Drummer Spencer Smith proved himself the most confident musician: While other members cautiously approached what was essentially an entire set comprised of new and daunting arrangements, he supplied a momentum otherwise lacking from older album tracks like “Camisado” and intricate new cuts like “She’s a Handsome Woman.” Singer Brendon Urie furrowed and arched his brow to signify emotions he couldn’t fully articulate with hands occupied with guitars, while guitarist Ryan Ross looked uncomfortable and affable bassist Jon Walker acted as spokesman. Despite the fact that Panic had traded its burlesque dancers, frilly costumes and androgynous makeup for muted beige outfits and facial hair, the largely teenage and female audience screamed as if attending a boy-band spectacle. And to some degree, they were: Walker chided Urie for taking a sip from a beer, as the frontman was two days shy of his twenty-first birthday; an event Smith won’t celebrate for several m

VMAs Video: Are Panic at the Disco Depressed? Why Do Paramore Blog?Rolling Stone’s trip to the VMAs was quite educational: we learned that Linkin Park are developing a designer drug with the goal of enslaving all humanity (seriously, watch Chester Bennington explain it), and that Panic at the Disco are in a weird state of mind — see for yourself by watching our interview above. “We’re going to do a record over the winter,” Ryan Ross says, and the band shares an Axl Rose story. Backstage With Panic at the Disco: “Give the Jonas Brothers a Beer”The visitor’s locker room is like home to Panic at the Disco. It’s their dressing room at the Staples Center arena in Los Angeles, and there is the usual spread of chips, salsa and a big jug of Johnny Walker Red, all to help with the idle hours before showtime as Christmas lights blink in the corner. But the band is thinking about making music again. Panic bassist Jon Walker sits on a miniature amp with an electric guitar and begins strumming John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Guitarist Ryan Ross sits next to him in a pink tie and purple blazer, chewing on a bagel, but he soon moves to a small drum kit to tap out an anxious beat. “It’s funny how when you’re on tour you don’t really play music that much,” says Walker, “so we’re trying to make that happen again.” (Click above for exclusive backstage footage of Panic at the Disco). The October 10 date in L.A. is only the fourth night of a tour with Dashboard Confessional, Plain White T’s and the Cab, the first live road trip sponsored by the Rock Band video game. And Panic is keeping miniature amps, a little jazzman’s drum kit and a couple of guitars in their dressing room to work on songs for the next album, a follow-up to this year’s classic rock and pop-influenced Pretty. Odd. Another crucial bit of equipment are the burning the candles they bring to every arena locker room, says Walker. “Candles are a big must in arenas when the night before there were 40 Detroit Red Wings in the dressing room sweating it out.” Singer Brendon Urie sips a beer and drummer Spencer Smith is fresh from the shower. The band spent the last few weeks back and forth between their home base of Las Vegas and California — rehearsing at home, then out to L.A. to shoot a video for “Northern Downpour,” a few days of rehearsal and a show in San Diego, L.A. again for Last Call with Carson Daly, back to Vegas, Phoenix, Vegas and now in downtown L.A. In a few hours would be the tour’s first show to include Panic’s big video wall. “We’re going to film the sho

Maroon 5, Fergie Rule iTunes’ 2007 Chart, Panic! Sets Album Release Date, Lily Allen Covers ELO and More Even though no readers voted for Maroon 5’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long in our Readers’ Top 25 Albums of 2007 list, the band still managed to top another important list: it was named iTunes’ best-selling album of 2007. Maroon 5 beat out Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black and Kanye West’s Graduation for the most-purchased spot. On the singles side, Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” grabbed number one, while her “Glamorous” settled in at number five. In a ruling issued yesterday, a $3 billion invasion of privacy lawsuit against rapper/producer Dr. Dre was dismissed. The suit stems back to 2000, when a conversation between Detroit city officials regarding risqué videos shown during Dre’s concert was included on the Dre/Eminem Up in Smoke tour DVD. Panic! At the Disco will release their second album on March 25th. Panic! will also play a series of U.S. shows before the new, still-untitled album comes out. System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian will collaborate with Wu-Tang Clan’s The RZA on the “futuristic-specific” score for the upcoming sci-fi film Babylon A.D., starring Vin Diesel. After two months of distributing for free the Readers’ Number One Album of 2007, Radiohead finally closed down InRainbows.com yesterday in preparation for the album’s proper release on CD January 1st. Check out Lily Allen’s cover version of the Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mister Blue Sky.”

In the Studio: Panic! at the Disco (With Bonus Pete Wentz Video Interview) Panic! at the Disco guitarist-lyricist Ryan Ross is tired of computer-tuned vocals and software-tweaked drums. “People have taken technology so far, to the point where music is almost sterile these days,” he says from the studio in Las Vegas’ Palms Hotel, taking a break from recording sessions for the band’s second album. “With all those old rock & roll records, you can really feel there’s a character to them, because it was played by real people. I feel like a lot of that’s missing now.” It’s a common argument these days, but Ross is an odd person to be making it: His own band’s platinum debut, the Fall Out Boy-plus-synth-style A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, was a prime offender, overflowing with maxed-out pitch-correction and baroque Pro Tools trickery. “That’s a valid point,” Ross says. “That record is basically programmed to a T. I mean, everything is lined up and perfect.” Click here to watch Pete Wentz talk about the new Panic! songs he’s heard so far, his favorite new lyrics and how he’s watched the band grow up and evolve. For their second album, everything is different: The band is writing songs on acoustic guitars, not on computers. And even though the group members have a far higher budget at their disposal than the $10,000 they spent on the first one, they’re recording the album live in the studio. “We do take after take until we get it right,” Ross says. “It’s a lot harder, but it’s making us play better.” They were still in high school when they recorded Fever, and it seems like they’re faintly embarrassed by it: “I think that everybody kind of changes a lot between the time they’re seventeen and when they’re twenty-one or twenty-two,” says Ross. The growing process hasn’t been easy. The band discarded ten or so songs for what would have been an entirely different v
