Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhotograph by Terry Richardson TV’s sexiest drama and cult hit Gossip Girl made its way onto Rolling Stone with a scorching cover by photographer-provocateur Terry Richardson. We went behind-the-scenes of the cast photo shoot, hung out with Leeghton Meester and Blake Lively while they posed for the cover and got all the juicy details from the GG set. Click here to get your Gossip Girl fix. Jane’s Addiction, Big Boi, Circle Jerks and Peter Bjorn and John are just some of the acts Rock Daily has seen since arriving in Austin for SXSW. Now he tells AllHipHop the “top secret” LP is “fire.” But there’s no release date yet. Cops tell TMZ the scene after Lil Wayne’s show in Arizona last week turned violent when Weezy’s tour bus brigade pulled into a local apartment complex. Kanye West Loves Rolling Stone. Sort of.When Kanye West’s crazily entertaining new mixtape, Can’t Tell Me Nothing, popped up over the weekend, we were psyched to preview some tracks from The Graduation. (According to one of Kanye’s many shout-outs, it drops “quite soon” — by which we think he means September.) What we weren’t expecting was to be namechecked in the middle of the disc. Over an unlikely sample — Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks” — ‘Ye raps:

Gossip Girl’s Top Music Moments: Thurston Moore’s “Sheena,” MoreFrom the minute Gossip Girl premiered in 2007, music on the show proved to be as important as the headbands and heartbreak. As the carefree whistle of Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks” opened the premiere episode, the scene was set for the show’s delicious combination of Upper East Side extravagance and angst. No surprise there, since Josh Schwartz, the creator The O.C., is also behind Gossip Girl. Schwartz and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas practically pioneered the art of infusing TV with must-see musical moments that rival the show’s plotlines. When they joined forces again to bring the drama to life at Constance Billard and St. Jude, they revisited the tried and true formula of using indie rock mainstays like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party and Cold War Kids and having bands like the Pierces and No Doubt appear onscreen, but the show has also taken even more dramatic steps to showcase artists. In the so-called “Virgins-isode” (official title “Seventeen Candles”), the Virgins’ entire EP served as the score. In honor of our Gossip Girl cover story, Patsavas gave us the rundown of some of her favorite music moments from the show (check out the clip of “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” on the show, above): “We try to mix it up a little on Gossip Girl — bands from NYC, poptronica, indie rock, pop proper and some gems from the past. I work closely with executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz to define the sound of the show, who by the way, are some of the most sincere and savvy music fans around. Some of my favorite musical moments on Gossip Girl are the ones that we can collaborate with the artists. Both Sonic Youth and No Doubt covered some of our favorite tracks from the vinyl archives (in addition to the original versions of a Love and Rockets and Siouxie and the Banshees track from said archives). We had a call to talk “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” with Thurston Moore and [former Be Your Own Pet singer] Jemina Pearl and the result was their version o

New Reviews: Mastodon, The Decemberists, Peter Bjorn and JohnPhoto: Miller/FilmMagic Loudly leading the charge of new releases this week is Mastodon’s Crack the Skye, which garnered a four-star review from Rolling Stone. Setting out to reach their “Metallica moment,” the band hooked up with producer Brendan O’Brien for an album we described as “thrill–ride stuff that conjures not just art–metal predecessors such as Helmet but also old–school prog–rockers like Rush, Frank Zappa and Yes.” The Rasputin-inspired “The Czar” is alone worth the price of admission. Also hitting shelves is the Decemberists’ The Hazards of Love. Combining British folk-rock and heavy-metal thunder, Colin Meloy and the rest of the Portland, Oregon collective make a prog-rock concept album worthy of four stars. “From the glacial, droning opening track to the head–scratcher folk finale, The Hazards of Love takes its time, inviting you to grab a seat in front of the fire, stoke your Meerschaum pipe and take a trip,” Will Hermes writes. Also joining the four-star review parade are “Young Folks” masterminds Peter Bjorn and John, whose Living Thing currently resides in your favorite record store. PB&J’s fifth album features more “infectious electro–acoustic tunes framing tales of romance and its discontents” but with cheeky lyrics and beats that sound like they were programmed by Depeche Mode. For the rest of this week’s noteworthy release, check the reviews below: • 1990s - Kicks • Blue October - Approaching Normal • Sarah Borges - The Stars Are Out • Coheed and Cambria - Neverender

SXSW Day One Wrap-Up: The Kills, Peter Moren and Kaki King Follow all of RollingStone.com’s ongoing SXSW coverage here. The opening day of the annual South by Southwest festival is in the books, and while fans, journalists and industry people were still busy arriving and staking out the best spots for margaritas, there were still plenty of parties and showcases to whet the musical appetite. Here are a few highlights from the opening round of what will be a long and fruitful festival. • Kill the Daylight: The line for the Levi’s/Fader house snaked around the block in the moments before the Kills took the stage on Wednesday afternoon. They opened their set with “U R A Fever,” the first single from their new album, Midnight Boom, and picked up steam — and crowd enthusiasm — over the next couple tunes. Oddly, the room was nowhere near as crowded as I expected given the size of the line. Hopefully the Levi’s/Fader folks, who consistently throw one of SXSW’s best daytime parties, will have the kinks worked out by today. • Friends With “P”: Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn and John played a solo gig at the Parish last night, as part of the Almost Gold showcase. I suspect that people eyeballing the festival guide didn’t recognize Morén’s name from his popular indie rock group, because it was a fairly low-key crowd. Morén, meanwhile, seemed slightly uncomfortable onstage without Bjorn and John, but only in between songs when his monologues rambled on and on. The performance itself, however, was lovely in just the way you’d hope: Apparently, Morén decided to do a solo project after having too much extra PB&J material, and the sparsely orchestrated tunes he played last night sounded like they could have easily fit in on Writer’s Block. He definitely needs to work on editing his own banter, though. • King of the Night: Kaki King slayed the crowd at Club DeVille just before midnight. Playing with her full band, the
