"Our Ill Wills" by Shout Out LoudsIndie-pop seems to have become the unofficial national genre of Sweden. Anchored by the freewheeling, childlike approach of I'm From Barcelona and the breakout popularity of Peter Bjorn and John, twee-pop is becoming just as common as Ikea. Following in line with their Scandinavian peers—and the trajectory of their excellent 2005 debut Howl Howl Gaff Gaff—Shout Out Louds' second offering, Our Ill Wills, is a scrapbook 12 songs deep of insecurities, lost nights and lost loves. 1980s British mope-pop is an undeniable influence, as the band cribs The Smiths' juxtaposition of bouncy, jilting guitars with sardonic and self-deprecating lyrics and the vocal stylings of The Cure's Robert Smith. But Shout Out Louds aren't short on creativity of their own. "Tonight I Have To Leave It" kicks off the record (and sets the bar high) with a Johnny Marr-style chord progression fused with staccato percussion and bursts of waltzing strings that undulate

"Open Field" by Taken by TreesBest known as the frontwoman of Swedish band The Concretes, singer Victoria Bergsman embarks on her first solo outing as Taken by Trees with the release of Open Field. In contrast to The Concretes' robust pop compositions, Open Field is a much quieter affair—a collection of intimate folk numbers that occasionally venture into the realm of low-key pop. The album's minimalist arrangements and diverse instrumentation, which feature contributions from co-producer Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John (Bergsman sang on the PBJ hit single "Young Folks"), foreground Bergsman's voice. Each track's success hinges on the delicate balance between the music's simplicity and the vocals' emotional complexity. When Bergsman's delivery attains a pitch-perfect balance of heartache and hope, the results can prove enthralling. On "Too Young," her ethereal vocals convey the bittersweetness of loves lost while the bare-bones accompaniment of droning organs and scant drums

What Are They Listening To: The Bravery, The Honorary Title and The Teeth The Honorary Title singer-guitarist Jarrod Gorbel: “I’m listening to Peter Bjorn and John, Illinois and the soundtrack to the movie Once. I really enjoy the ’60s influence of the first, Illinois is the best indie pop since Built to Spill and the Once soundtrack with Glen from The Frames has amazing ultra-personal love songs that will make you weep — when I came home from that movie I was inspired to write a shitload of cheesy tunes that make you cry.” Bravery frontman Sam Endicott: “I’m listening to the greatest band ever, Smoosh. They are three girls ranging in age from 13 to 8. They sound like a super-indied-out version of Hanson. They are legally only allowed to tour two weeks out of the year, and their mom sells merch. Awesome.” The Teeth (Peter MoDavis, Aaron MoDavis, Brian Ashby and Jonas Oesterle): “James Brown. He taught us how to play our guitars together and how to play a show. We always talk about him in the Teeth van. Who would win in fight? James Brown or a tiger?”
