The Collective edged out Eagles, Animals and many more furry and feathered bands. To see if your favorite Animal Band made it, check the Readers’ List below: 1. Animal Collective 2. Eagles 3. The Animals 4. Fleet Foxes 5. Grizzly Bear 6. Modest Mouse 7. Super Furry Animals 8. Cat Power 9. Panda Bear 10. Wolfmother 11. The Monkees 12. Def Leppard 13. Steppenwolf 14. Wolf Parade 15. Weekend Rock List: Animal BandsPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty We’re going to the SXSW Festival next week, where bands like An Horse, Department of Eagles, Kittens Ablaze and countless more acts are playing, so we’re dedicating this week’s Rock List to bands that looked to the animal kingdom for inspiration when it came to time to name their group. Tell us your favorite Animal Bands, and on Monday we’ll count up the votes and reveal the king of the rock jungle. And just to keep this from being a landslide for one certain band — cough, the Beatles — bugs don’t count, but birds do. Readers’ Rock List: Bird SongsPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty In memory of Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell, the musician responsible for the famous introduction to the band’s “Free Bird” (and to honor last night’s great effort by the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl), this weekend’s Rock List was dedicated to Bird Songs. It was a heated battle between two former Super Bowl Halftime Show performers, but in the end Paul McCartney and the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird” edged out Prince and his Purple Rain gem “When Doves Cry” for the prize. To see where Alice in Chains, the Misfits and Wilco all nested, check out our Readers’ Rock List: Bird Songs below: 1. The Beatles – “Blackbird” 2. Prince – “When Doves Cry” 3. Alice In Chains – “Rooster” 4. The Beatles – “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” 5. Bob Marley – “Three Little Bird” 6. The Trashmen – “Surfin’ Bird” 7. The Beatles – “And Your Bird Can Sing” 8. The Grateful Dead – “Bird Song” 9. Steve Miller Band – “Fly Like An Eagle” 10. Phish – “Birds of a Feather” 11. The Misfits – “Where Eagles Dare” 12. Nelly Furtado – “Like A Bird” 13. Fleetwood Mac – “Songbird” 14. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird” 15. Wilco – “Hummingbird”

Weekend Rock List: Jam BandsPhoto: Slevert/Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty For jam band fans, the past seven days were probably the best week since Phish played that Lemonwheel festival back in 1998: Trey Anastasio and gang, the Dead and the Allman Brothers all announced plans to tour in ‘09. To honor all of the proprietors of 30-minute songs, this week’s rock list is dedicated Jam Bands, those wonderful artists that give us a reason to quit our jobs, stop showering and caravan around in worship. If they jam, they count (thus, Sonic Youth qualifies — we’ll expect to see plenty of Disco Biscuits and moe. in the votes, too) So tell us your picks, and on Monday we’ll bust out Europe ‘72 while we count the votes. Until then, good luck in the Phish ticket lottery and check out our picks: • The Grateful Dead • The Allman Brothers • Phish • Sonic Youth • My Morning Jacket

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Gries/Getty As if Bonnaroo didn’t attract enough hippies, we revealed that Phish will likely headline two nights at the Tennessee festival in 2009. Let’s just hope Trey Anastasio refrains from calling anyone “squid brains.” We learned Prince has a new album but doesn’t know what to do with it. Rather than just letting it collect dust, the Purple One played four songs on a Los Angeles indie rock station, then a fifth song appeared on a blinding, mysterious Website. While pundits debated whether the wave may be crashing for rock video games, Guitar Hero announced an all-Metallica game, then Rock Band struck back with Pearl Jam’s Ten. U2 announced No Line on the Horizon would be out March 3rd and then filled their wallets with the $19 million that Live Nation owed them. The whole thing made our readers extremely excited… almost too excited. Axl Rose blogged, so we analyzed his rants and Chinese Democracy continued its descent down the charts. Perhaps Axl would’ve been better off signing with Wal-Mart rather than Best Buy.

Video: Phish’s “Weekapaug Groove” from New “Walnut Creek” DVD Despite their near-reunion at Rothbury, it looks like the summer of 2008 will pass without a fresh dose of Phish. However, August 5th sees the release of Walnut Creek, the latest live DVD put out by the band. Taken from what many fans consider the band’s greatest period, Walnut Creek captures a famous Phish show from the summer of 1997 during which the band played through a tremendous rain storm at the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC, and features classics like “Down With Disease,” “Mike’s Song” and the extremely rare “Bye Bye Foot.” The DVD won’t be out until August 5, but click above for a sample clip of the band performing their staple “Weekapaug Groove.”

Pavement Return as Indie-Rock Heroes at Debut U.S. Reunion GigPhoto: Melissa Moore “I’d say it’s nice to be back,” remarked Bob Nastanovich not long into Pavement’s show last night at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California. “But I’ve never fucking been here before!” True enough, Bobby boy. The jocks pumping their fists to “Cut Your Hair,” the chick doing the Phish-fan noodle dance to “Stereo,” the countless balding dudes diluting their beers with tears during “Here” — this was definitely new territory for arguably the greatest indie-rock band of all time.
