Primus

Primus Album: “Suck on This [Remaster]”

Primus Album: “Suck on This [Remaster]”
Description :
Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); Larry Lalonde (guitar); Tim Alexander (drums).
Recorded live at The Berkeley Square, Berkeley, California on February 25 and March 5, 1989. Originally released on Prawn Song. Includes liner notes by Les Claypool.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded live in 1990, SUCK ON THIS is the perfect snapshot of Primus in its infancy. The classic line-up of Les Claypool (bass/vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar), and Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums) was only together for a mere few months when these shows were recorded at California's Berkeley Square (in February and March of '89). Almost every song would be re-recorded in the studio on future releases, but several of the original live versions on SUCK ON THIS remain the definitive ones--such as the kooky narrative "Tommy the Cat" and the snide "The Heckler." Other standouts include such early Primus classics as "John the Fisherman," "Jellikit," "Pudding Time," and "Harold of the Rocks."

- Great Album

This is a great album. My first primus album. Les Claypool is an amazing bassist, now i wish i had picked up the bass instead of the guitar!!

- from the opening triangle ringing of rush's "yyz"...

i knew this was going to be quite an adventure to listen to. after buying "seas of cheese" and finally realizing my love for it and then sinking my teeth into the "misc. debris" ep, it was time to continue my newfound relationship with the band called primus. seemed to me the best way to go would be to check out what their live show would be like from a distance. so i picked up "suck on this" and discovered some vintage primus. it was time to try to catch up and this was the perfect way to do it. say what you will about live albums, but if you appreciate a good show in a cozy, smoke-filled bar with a hundred strangers you don't know, you'll appreciate this, especially if you know what you're getting yourself into from the moment you push the play button. i love the live version of "groundhogs day" as well as "the heckler." for a while, it was the only track off "suck on this" that was missing as a studio version on a later disc, so i always wondered what i would sound like. luckily, i finally found out at the end of "antipop".

- Best Primus ever

If you like Primus but have never heard this album: BUY IT. Heck, if for any reason you think you might like this album: BUY IT. It is the best Primus album by far. Even if you don't care for live albums: BUY IT. It just rocks. Not only is Les Claypool amazing, he is almost outshined by Larry LaLonde's guitar playing. And as a fan of Les's crazy voice, I find that it sounds better here than it does on a lot of the studio stuff where he kind of gets drowned out. (Or someone else does the vocals like on Tommy the Cat.) This is quality stuff and as the first Primus album I ever owned, everything after was a disappointment.

- Must for Primus Fans

I was stuck on Primus for quite a while, around a year, which is long for me. (til Zappa pushed them out the way.. he he)

This album captures the essence of Primus in their early days. (edit)Also, this album is the only one independently released by Primus and funded by Les Claypool's father, so the support goes straight to them, rather than a record company. The energy on the album is definite, those cats are just so young and energetic and into what they were doing. The heckler is probably my favorite tune on the album. (also check out the studio version of the heckler at the end of "coattails of a dead man" off of "antipop.")

Sure primus has mellowed a little over the years, but you can't expect every album to be like Seas of Cheese or Frizzle Fry, they've matured, and if you think they're too "mellow" to still put on a show, then you are wrong. Constant Mosh that will not cease til show ends, at least in Houston.

People were even moshing and moving to un-moshable numbers.

Primus, eternal suckage music

- keep suckin it up

This is Primus' first album. If you are a primus fan then why haven't you got this yet? This is rocorded from their earlier live shows. The sound quality is actually pretty good. This is the first release of popular hits such as John The Fisherman and Tommy The Cat. Hey, it's Primus, what else needs to be said?
