Rise Up, the group’s eighth studio release, set to be (appropriately) unleashed on the blazer-friendly holiday 4/20, features guest appearances from Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and J.Lo hubby Marc

Pickle Defeats “Nickleback” In Facebook Fan BattlePhoto: Pimentel/WireImageFirst, a grassroots Facebook group helped Rage Against the Machine beat The X Factor for the U.K. Christmas Number One. Then, a pair of Facebook campaigns encouraged John Mellencamp to both quit smoking and run for Senate. Now, in what could be the weirdest accomplishment in the history of the social network, a page called “Can this pickle get more fans than Nickleback?” has attracted more fans in the past two weeks than the actual Nickelback fan page has accrued in its

Steve Earle on Townes Van Zandt and Turning Up the Volume: “I’m Too Loud for My Own Audience”Photo: Arnold/Wireimage When Steve Earle was just 16 years old he struck up a relationship with songwriter Townes Van Zandt that would change the direction of the budding musician’s life: Van Zandt became a mentor to Earle, and now Earle is repaying the favor by recording a tribute album to his troubled late friend, who died in 1997. Brian Braiker rang up the rabble-rouser in Nashville to chat about the record, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and Earle’s favorite new band: the Kings of Leon. • Q&A: The Music That Moves Steve Earle

Metallica Previews New Studio Material to Positive Results A pair of British metal magazines were given the opportunity to preview six songs from the upcoming Metallica album, with both publications giving the initial listening positive remarks. Both Rock Sound and Metal Hammer compared the new material to Master of Puppets, while the first single drew comparisons to the hit “Nothing Else Matters.” Of the six song previewed, only “Flamingo” had a working title, and one was described as having a “Rage Against the Machine” vibe. Rage and Wilco to Play Lollapalooza? The latest Lollapalooza rumor has Rage Against the Machine and Wilco added to the bill alongside the already-rumored Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. C3 Presents, the Austin, TX-based company behind Lollapalooza, refuses to confirm or deny any rumors. The official line-up will not be announced until next month. If Rage and Wilco were added to the bill, Lollapalooza would immediately head to the front of the line as the definitive festival of the season. [Photo: Getty]

Rage Against the Machine Schedule Show Near Republican ConventionFollowing their near-riot-inducing performance at this weekend’s Lollapalooza, Rage Against the Machine have scheduled another concert they probably hope has similar results. The band announced that they’ll perform in Minneapolis’ Target Center on September 3rd, which is significant because that’s the same week the Republican National Convention rolls into the Twin City of St. Paul. In 2000, the band played an outdoor show in Los Angeles during the Democratic National Convention, and that show ended with police using tear gas and pepper spray. In the announcement of the Minneapolis show, Rage made no mention of the political overtones their show will carry, but Tom Morello has already revealed he will play a union rally with Steve Earle in St. Paul on September 1st, the first day of the RNC. Protest isn’t free, though: tickets for Rage’s show in Prince’s hometown are $60 and go on sale Saturday. [Photo: Getty]

Perry Farrell Talks Favorite Lollapalooza Memories, Plus Backstage PhotosWith the festival he helped organize now in its 12th year, Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell talked to Rolling Stone about his favorite Lolla moments backstage at the fest. “There’s a zillion of them. Watching Eddie Vedder jump from a stack a story high into the crowd back in 1994,” the onetime Jane’s Addiction leader said, even though he meant 1992. “I’ve seen people having sex backstage. That was pretty exciting. I’ve participated myself.” With this year’s Lollapalooza maybe sporting its most power-packed, headliner-heavy lineup yet, what was Farrell looking forward to the most? “I don’t think there will be anything but mayhem when Rage Against the Machine takes the stage,” Farrell said. Turns out he was right. For more of Farrell from Lollapalooza, plus video interviews with the Black Keys, Gogol Bordello and Mason Jennings, check out our Rock ‘N’ Roll Diary from the Chicago fest. Zach de la Rocha’s One Day As A Lion Unveil First Song The first song from One Day As A Lion, the side project of Rage Against the Machine’s Zach de le Rocha, has been posted on the band’s MySpace page. As “Wild International” proves, the years of recording dormancy hasn’t slowed de la Rocha’s flow, as the rapper comes roaring out of the gate and never loses speed. The song sounds like it could’ve been on RATM’s Evil Empire if not for de la Rocha’s keyboards replacing Tom Morello’s guitar wizardry. One Day As A Lion, who get their name from the quote “It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb,” will release their self-titled debut EP on July 22nd. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: The Grateful Dead, Flaming Lips and Zach de la Rocha Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead said the band stands “at the ready to be of service” for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The surviving members of the Dead last performed together at an Obama fundraiser in San Francisco in February. The Flaming Lips will contribute a new song, “Cosmic Trigger 2,” to the soundtrack to the fishing documentary Okie Noodling II. The song is a nod to the track the Lips recorded for the original 2001 film. Rage Against the Machine’s Zach de la Rocha will release an EP with his side project One Day As a Lion on July 22nd. The band also features ex-Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore.

Paul McCartney Album “Should Be Ready By the Summer,” Morello Record Also Due Just seven months after the release of Memory Almost Full, Sir Paul McCartney is already brewing up a new album. According to his publicist, “Paul started recording last week, but he has been writing for a while. It should be ready by the summer.” McCartney is reportedly working with producer Youth, a founding member of the band Killing Joke and the producer of albums such as the Verve’s Urban Hymns and, in some capacity, Guns N’ Roses’ long-delayed Chinese Democracy. Not to be outdone by McCartney’s prolificacy is Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who released his first solo album as the Nightwatchman in April 2007. Despite touring as both a member of the reunited Rage and as a solo entity, a second solo album is already near completion, with the working title of The Fabled City in place. While no release date is set, Morello expects the album out later this year.

Stooges, Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, Queens of the Stone Age Booked For Vegoose The initial lineup for this year’s Vegoose festival includes Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, the Shins, Queens of the Stone Age and Muse. Additional headliners Iggy & the Stooges will continue the hot trend of playing albums in their entirety with a performance of 1970’s landmark Fun House. Vegoose, which takes place October 26-28 in Las Vegas, will continue to feature outdoor festival-size shows during the day and more intimate indoor shows starring unexpected artist pairings at night. The festival will also draw on the local Vegas lifestyle by bringing back its Impersonators Cafe and a Wedding Chapel (though the vows are just for kicks). Tickets for the day performances are available starting July 28, and the night shows go on sale August 11. Photo: Dyson/Getty
