Rise Against on Mixing Politics and Mosh Pits at LollapaloozaRise Against’s fiery Saturday afternoon set at Lollapalooza looked like it could have gone down during one of the great Lollas of the ’90s — mosh pit and all. Frontman Tim McIlrath tells Rolling Stone the show had special significance for the band, not only because it was their first hometown gig in a while (they skipped Chicago on tour with Rancid), but because Grant Park has so much historical weight: “To play the same place where Obama gave his speech, the same place where the riots of 1968 w

Rise Against: Behind “Hero of War” and America’s “Broader Disease”Political punks Rise Against have a lot to celebrate — a new video for Appeal To Reason single “Hero of War,” a Fat Wreck Chords 7″, an upcoming tour with Rancid — but success hasn’t changed frontman Tim McIlrath’s purpose or resolve. After a successful contribution to A Nightmare Before Christmas’s soundtrack, Disney approached the band about doing a cover for High School Musical. “Needless to say, much to my daughter’s chagrin, it was something that’s obviously not us,” McIlrath tells Rolling

Behind Rise Against’s “Audience of One” Video: Political Punks Rock in MiniatureRise Against released one of 2008’s most gripping punk albums, Appeal to Reason (the band’s fifth LP), and the Chicago crew are going to hit the road with Rancid this summer. But first, a new video for fresh single “Audience of One.” The full video premiered on MySpace on January 15th, but click above for a special behind-the-video special packed with exclusive footage of frontman Tim McIlrath and Co. explaining the clip’s concept and execution. The Brett Simon-directed video features an impressive town built in miniature, but unsurprisingly, it’s a town with clear political overtones: there’s a mini Iraq war scene (the band counts the health-care of war vets as one of its big concerns), a forest suffering from clear-cutting, and homes being foreclosed, as well as a woman on a house trying to escape the rising flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. The band recently announced their upcoming summer trek with Rancid, telling fans, “Few things are more exciting than watching Bush finally release America as his eight year hostage, but if anything could rival that news, it’s this: We are more than pleased to announce that we will have the honor of touring the U.S. & Canada with punk rock legends Rancid this summer. If Tim Armstrong didn’t confirm it personally backstage in L.A. a few weeks ago, we wouldn’t believe it either.” When the band saw Reason debut at Number Three last year — their biggest week ever — McIlrath told RS, “That a band like us can crack the Top 10 speaks volumes about how frustrated people are with the world. People are looking for bands that reflect the questions they have about what’s going on.” Related Stories: • Rise Against’s Punk-Rock Explosion • Live Exclusive: Rise Against’s “Blood to Bleed” From Hurricane Festival • Album Review: Appeal to Reason

20 Songs That Need To Be In Rock Band ImmediatelyRock Band 2 has been out for a little more than a month now, and Guitar Hero World Tour is upon us too, and yet, while part of me feels like I should have gotten tired of these games long ago, there are simply too many great songs left to play for me to stop shelling out hundreds of dollars to receive different combinations of scrolling, color-coded boxes. Just off the top of my head (two months worth of thinking), here's a list of 20 songs that need to be included in the Rock Band / Guitar Hero series before I'm too old to scream along to them in a British accent without permanently retarding the development of my eventual children. 20. White Stripes - Seven Nation Army Still no White Stripes in any of the music games (guess it's not as glamorous as Bond credits or a Coke commercial), but this song would finally give the bassist something to do outside of Won't Get Fooled Again, plus you could set the Drumming difficulty to "Infant". 19. Andrew W.K. - Party Hard Bonus 50% multiplier if the lead singer bloodies himself mid-song. 18. Neil Young - Rockin' In The Free World If Neil Young is truly as into self-reinvention and adapting to the times as his fans claim, why wouldn't he allow his song to be divided into a series of five colored boxes for drunk people with plastic instruments? 17. Spin Doctors - Two Princes The day I stop wanting to sing, drum, and play guitar on this song all at once is the day I take my own life. (That's a joke, right Dan? No it's not, reader.) 16. Rancid - Ruby Soho I probably enjoy this song more than anyone still should in this crazy, post-1995 world we live in, but whatever. Here it is. 15. Pulp - Common People It's 2008 and this song hasn't stopped being awesome. 14. Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy See previous. 13. U2 - I Will Follow I just hope when U2 finally does appear in the game, it's not Vertigo and Elevation playing simultaneously. 12. Prince - 1999 Finally, a chance to be Prince outside of your masturbation fantasies! 11. No Dou
