To help boost struggling sales, EMI may re-release albums by many of their veteran artists, including David Bowie and Pink Floyd. Coldplay have announced their first show of 2008: a headlining gig at Osaka, Japan’s Summer Sonic festival on August 9th. The fest also boasts the Sex Pistols, the Verve, Panic at the Disco and many more. Kenny Chesney leads the pack with eleven nominations at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards, to be held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on May 18th. Despite rumors yesterday, actress Winona Ryder is not engaged to Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett, Ryder’s rep tells Us.

Elvis Costello Updates Web Site, Talks “Momofuku”

In a post on his newly revamped Web site, Elvis Costello confirmed his new album is named after the Momofuku Ando, the inventor of the Cup Noodle. “Like so many things in this world of wonders, all we had to do to make this record was add water,” he writes. The singer/songwriter also confirms that though the album will be available only as a double vinyl today, other mediums will follow. “You may prefer other, more portable, less scratchable, editions that will soon become available for your convenience,” Costello says. “But this is how it sounds the best: with a needle in a groove, the way the Supreme Being intended it to be.” Costello also gives an in-depth track-by-track on Momofuku, including stories behind collaborations with Roseanne Cash, Johnathan Rice and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis. Duran Duran Get Caught in Justin Timberlake’s Unstoppable Plot To Bring Sexy Back

First 50 Cent partnered with Justin Timberlake on a track about porn (“Ayo Technology”), now Duran Duran have fallen victim to JT’s SexyBack wiles. The band just shot an X-rated video featuring topless models for “Falling Down,” the first single off their November 13th album Red Carpet Massacre, the NME reports. The track, which was co-written and produced by collaboration machine Timberlake, was initially inspired by frontman Simon Le Bon’s experience recovering from a motorcycle accident in 1992. In the clip, however, the song’s dark themes are represented by a collection of beautiful naked women in rehab (the bandmembers portray doctors) and Le Bon swears this all makes sense somehow. “The concept of models in rehab has so much to do with what the song’s about,” he claims. “It’s very sad but there’s a kind of beauty in it as well. The song is about arrogance and pride, as well as personal breakdowns and the hope for redemption and the resilience of the human spirit.” Sounds … deep. We’ll have to see how it stacks up to this year’s other porn-tastic video, Rilo Kiley’s “Moneymaker.”

Rilo Kiley Admit to Becoming Amateur Pornographers for “Moneymaker” Video

Be careful which porn flicks you audition for — you might inadvertently wind up in a Rilo Kiley video. The band’s indie pinup of a frontwoman, Jenny Lewis, has revealed the casting process for the band’s provocative clip for “Moneymaker,” the first single from Under the Blacklight, out August 21. “We told people they were coming in and auditioning for a porno,” the singer recalls. “We sat them down and asked them about their experiences. … We met some really interesting, nice people.” The whole process allowed Lewis to indulge one of her new interests: exploring her own increasingly loose attitudes about sex and music. “As a woman, the older I get the more comfortable I feel writing about sex and singing about it,” she explains. “Now I feel comfortable enough where I can start writing about sex — not necessarily about my own experiences, but the sexual lives of others. And the somewhat deviant sexual lives of others.”

Coachella Day Two: Portishead, Death Cab, M.I.A., Malkmus, Kraftwerk

Saturday’s late-afternoon primetime sets began just before 5 p.m. at the Outdoor Theatre, where Stephen Malkmus was holding court with the Jicks. After joking about the environmental crisis, he half-heartedly crooned Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” adding, “I would have played that if I was over there,” gesturing towards the slightly larger Main Stage. After doodling one of his many lengthy solos during “Elmo Demo” (from the band’s new Real Emotional Trash), Malkmus, outfitted in a giant floppy hat, told the crowd, “That was one was for me. It felt so good to say something so stupid.” Informing the crowd the next track, “Hopscotch Willie,” was actually for them, the band broke into an extended desert jam, with power drummer Janet Weiss playing so integral a role, Malkmus spent the majority of the show turned sideways to partially face her. “These guys are so fucking good, I can’t believe I get to front this shit,” the former Pavement leader concluded. As the mid-day heat finally started to abate, strains of Death Cab for Cutie’s “The New Year” rang out across the Coachella field. Singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard rocked back and forth on his heels in front of several thousands fans at the Main Stage as his band debuted tracks from their new album Narrow Stairs (including winding, dark single “I Will Possess Your Heart” and “Long Division”), which sounded even broodier rubbing up against poppier older favorites like “We Laugh Indoors” and “The Sound of Settling.” Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis carries some glam with her in the form of passionate torch songs and fine threads. Over at the Outdoor Theatre she sang the tortured “I Never” with the lyrics “I’m only a woman of flesh and bone/and I wept much, we all do,” as guitarist Blake Sennett plucked out a romantic Fifties pop melody.

Rilo Kiley, Lupe Fiasco, The Academy Is … Help MTV’s Woodies Avoid Pitfalls of VMAs

Nearly everyone agrees MTV’s Video Music Awards are a lost cause when it comes to offering up what its viewers actually want (live performances! cool presenters!) as opposed to what they unfortunately get (clips of live songs! footage playing up the glitz and glamor of the event! people partying who are not you!). But the VMAs’ little brother, the mtvU Woodies, are thankfully far more in touch with its college-age audience. Last night the fourth-annual show taped at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, and the lineup was packed with fan-voted nominees and performers who’ve carved out their own niches in hip-hop and rock, like Spank Rock. The Academy Is… and Tokyo Police Club. Lupe Fiasco and Rilo Kiley filled in for original headliner Amy Winehouse, who may well have been the Woodie’s Britney in Vegas had she not bailed last week due to visa troubles. Highlights ranged from Lupe Fiasco’s opening performance of “Superstar” with guest vocals from Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump (in the house with his band to present Best Video Woodie) to onetime RS Artist to Watch The Academy Is… performing their breakthrough power ballad “Everything We Had” with a string section of Julliard students adding tear-jerking accompaniment. The performance-heavy lineup allowed most acts to play two full songs, as though mtvU was offering a mea culpa for the VMAs’ hotel-suite snippets. Peter (of Peter, Bjorn and John) was spotted headbanging along with members of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus during “We’ve Got a Big Mess on Our Hands,” The Academy’s guitar-heavy rocker of a second song.
