Elvis Costello Updates Web Site, Talks “Momofuku”

In a post on his newly revamped Web site, Elvis Costello confirmed his new album is named after the Momofuku Ando, the inventor of the Cup Noodle. “Like so many things in this world of wonders, all we had to do to make this record was add water,” he writes. The singer/songwriter also confirms that though the album will be available only as a double vinyl today, other mediums will follow. “You may prefer other, more portable, less scratchable, editions that will soon become available for your convenience,” Costello says. “But this is how it sounds the best: with a needle in a groove, the way the Supreme Being intended it to be.” Costello also gives an in-depth track-by-track on Momofuku, including stories behind collaborations with Roseanne Cash, Johnathan Rice and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis. To help boost struggling sales, EMI may re-release albums by many of their veteran artists, including David Bowie and Pink Floyd. Coldplay have announced their first show of 2008: a headlining gig at Osaka, Japan’s Summer Sonic festival on August 9th. The fest also boasts the Sex Pistols, the Verve, Panic at the Disco and many more. Kenny Chesney leads the pack with eleven nominations at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards, to be held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on May 18th. Despite rumors yesterday, actress Winona Ryder is not engaged to Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett, Ryder’s rep tells Us.

Duran Duran Get Caught in Justin Timberlake’s Unstoppable Plot To Bring Sexy Back

First 50 Cent partnered with Justin Timberlake on a track about porn (“Ayo Technology”), now Duran Duran have fallen victim to JT’s SexyBack wiles. The band just shot an X-rated video featuring topless models for “Falling Down,” the first single off their November 13th album Red Carpet Massacre, the NME reports. The track, which was co-written and produced by collaboration machine Timberlake, was initially inspired by frontman Simon Le Bon’s experience recovering from a motorcycle accident in 1992. In the clip, however, the song’s dark themes are represented by a collection of beautiful naked women in rehab (the bandmembers portray doctors) and Le Bon swears this all makes sense somehow. “The concept of models in rehab has so much to do with what the song’s about,” he claims. “It’s very sad but there’s a kind of beauty in it as well. The song is about arrogance and pride, as well as personal breakdowns and the hope for redemption and the resilience of the human spirit.” Sounds … deep. We’ll have to see how it stacks up to this year’s other porn-tastic video, Rilo Kiley’s “Moneymaker.”

"Set the Woods on Fire" by Art in Manila

It was a sad day for dream pop when Azure Ray broke up. The Nebraskan duo of Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor released three increasingly excellent albums of country-tinged melancholia, sending music reviewers constantly seeking new synonyms for "ethereal." Thankfully, the pair's post-Ray projects have been just as satisfying, though divergent stylistically. Orenda Fink's solid new band, Art in Manila, lends a harder edge to her previously wispy work with Azure Ray, molding the well-crafted pop songs on their debut, Set the Woods on Fire, into MOR indie fare—which, in this case, isn't necessarily a bad thing. Like the drugged-out Rilo Kiley or less inscrutable Neko Case they so strongly resemble, Art in Manila deliver comfortably predictable indie pop with darker moods hiding in the corners. A punchy backbeat and Rhodes piano give bite and swagger to "Our Addictions," and a Neil Young-y crunch informs the title track's lovely chorus, but Set

"Under the Blacklight" by Rilo Kiley

Though Rilo Kiley are commonly associated with indie rock, their music often emulates the slick sound of classic rock and country pop. But what was once a casual flirtation with the mainstream has developed into a torrid affair on their latest album, Under the Blacklight, an eclectic set of tunes that draws influences from a variety of decidedly unhip touchstones such as late-'80s teen pop ("Give a Little Love"), Latin fusion ("Dejalo"), sleazy hair metal ("The Moneymaker") and glossy Lite FM balladry ("Silver Lining"). Though a few of the cuts hew closer to the sunny country rock of their 2004 commercial breakthrough, More Adventurous, the standout tracks on Under the Blacklight mostly find the band trying on old-school pop styles as though they were vintage outfits. Rilo Kiley's experimentation largely pays off because of the strength of their songwriting—not to mention the effortless charisma of lead vocalist Jenny Lewis, a woman blessed with a voice so
