Rise Against on Mixing Politics and Mosh Pits at LollapaloozaRise Against’s fiery Saturday afternoon set at Lollapalooza looked like it could have gone down during one of the great Lollas of the ’90s — mosh pit and all. Frontman Tim McIlrath tells Rolling Stone the show had special significance for the band, not only because it was their first hometown gig in a while (they skipped Chicago on tour with Rancid), but because Grant Park has so much historical weight: “To play the same place where Obama gave his speech, the same place where the riots of 1968 w

Rise Against: Behind “Hero of War” and America’s “Broader Disease”Political punks Rise Against have a lot to celebrate — a new video for Appeal To Reason single “Hero of War,” a Fat Wreck Chords 7″, an upcoming tour with Rancid — but success hasn’t changed frontman Tim McIlrath’s purpose or resolve. After a successful contribution to A Nightmare Before Christmas’s soundtrack, Disney approached the band about doing a cover for High School Musical. “Needless to say, much to my daughter’s chagrin, it was something that’s obviously not us,” McIlrath tells Rolling

Behind Rise Against’s “Audience of One” Video: Political Punks Rock in MiniatureRise Against released one of 2008’s most gripping punk albums, Appeal to Reason (the band’s fifth LP), and the Chicago crew are going to hit the road with Rancid this summer. But first, a new video for fresh single “Audience of One.” The full video premiered on MySpace on January 15th, but click above for a special behind-the-video special packed with exclusive footage of frontman Tim McIlrath and Co. explaining the clip’s concept and execution. The Brett Simon-directed video features an impressive town built in miniature, but unsurprisingly, it’s a town with clear political overtones: there’s a mini Iraq war scene (the band counts the health-care of war vets as one of its big concerns), a forest suffering from clear-cutting, and homes being foreclosed, as well as a woman on a house trying to escape the rising flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. The band recently announced their upcoming summer trek with Rancid, telling fans, “Few things are more exciting than watching Bush finally release America as his eight year hostage, but if anything could rival that news, it’s this: We are more than pleased to announce that we will have the honor of touring the U.S. & Canada with punk rock legends Rancid this summer. If Tim Armstrong didn’t confirm it personally backstage in L.A. a few weeks ago, we wouldn’t believe it either.” When the band saw Reason debut at Number Three last year — their biggest week ever — McIlrath told RS, “That a band like us can crack the Top 10 speaks volumes about how frustrated people are with the world. People are looking for bands that reflect the questions they have about what’s going on.” Related Stories: • Rise Against’s Punk-Rock Explosion • Live Exclusive: Rise Against’s “Blood to Bleed” From Hurricane Festival • Album Review: Appeal to Reason

Exclusive: “Guitar Hero World Tour” Adds Songs by Steve Miller, Wings, Rise AgainstPhoto: Getty Guitar Hero World Tour has already revealed an intimidating track list, and today Rock Daily can unveil another nine songs that will be included in the franchise’s latest offering. With a mix of the hyper-technical (Dream Theater), late-night stoner jams (Steve Miller), and full-on screamers (Filter), the new batch of tunes showcases a number of classics, as well as one currently climbing the rock charts: “Re-Education (Through Labor)” by Chicago punk band Rise Against. “I’ll meet one of the kids who live in my neighborhood, and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, I heard you’re in a band,’ ” Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath says. “I say, ‘Well, we’ve sold this many records and we’ve played giant shows and I’ve toured the world seven times,’ and they’re like, ‘No, I’ve never heard of your band.’ Then I say, ‘Well, I have a song in Guitar Hero,’ and they say, ‘You have a song in Guitar Hero? Are you serious?’ “ McIlrath isn’t a heavy gamer, but while some musicians give rhythm-based games grief for being just a facsimile of the real thing, he understands the appeal and even has a strategy for when he dabbles. “It’s like an interactive jukebox,” he says. “Who doesn’t want to listen to AC/DC and Heart all day? I can usually play it on ‘hard.’ I play with an actual guitar pick, and it really helps me. There’s something about the action of a pick going up and down — that’s my secret weapon.” As for the song itself, the average listener might not catch the serious lyrics from underneath the riffing and melodies, but as with most Rise Against songs, the subject matter stands in strong juxtaposition to the borderline bouncy tune (”We don’t live, we just survive on the scraps that you throw away”). “That’s always been the ace up our sleeve as a band,” McIlrath said. “We have songs that can sound good on the radio and can sound good in a video game, but we have lyrics that are still very much derivative from the hardcore and punk world that we came from. They can be very blu
