Serj Tankian Thinks Holograms Are the Future of Touring Serj Tankian has a plan to help improve the environment and cut down on emissions: holographic touring. “I think we could reduce our need to travel if we could project ourselves into meetings and concerts. We have the technology, and we’re not using it right now,” said the System of a Down frontman. “It would open up a whole new world for touring. There would be no travel costs, so bands with very little money could play shows, and tickets would cost less.” Tankian’s humanitarian efforts are well-documented: He recently launched the Axis of Justice tour with Tom Morello to promote peace, human rights and social equality. Tankian also stressed that the fans wouldn’t mind seeing a hologram perform live as “it’s not like the audience can touch me, anyway.” Related Stories: Video: Tom Morello, Serj Tankian, Billy Bragg Rock “Body of War” at SXSW Morello, Tankian and Harper Deliver Weighty SXSW Sets for “Body of War” In the Studio: System of a Down Side Project Scars on Broadway Trades Metal for Melodic Rock

Serj Tankian: “We Haven’t Decided If the Future Contains System or Not”Ten months after releasing Elect the Dead, his solo debut, System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian isn’t taking time to look back. After settling into the role of sole songwriter and the name on the marquee (”I guess people have to get used to my funny name”), Tankian is finding he can’t stop. After a set on Ozzfest’s main stage last weekend and staring a slate of impending European festivals in the face, he’s looking to wind down the Elect the Dead cycle and push on not only with another solo record, but a handful of other projects. “I have five hundred recorded songs that are unreleased,” he said. “I’ve been composing for a play with Steven Sater, who did Spring Awakening. I just did a track with Mike Patton for a film called Body of Lies, and there are other films that I’m composing or co-composing.” With that mischievous smile on his face that makes it hard to tell if he’s on the level, Tankian elaborated on his plans for his second album. “I’m structuring the next record kind of like a jazz orchestral,” he said. “I’ve got a full orchestra interested, so I want this giant electric guitar in the air to be played by a full orchestra. I want the orchestra to be the electric guitar. I want to make an orchestra do what it’s never done before, like a GG Allin type orchestra. Think of that.” As far as the future of System of a Down, Tankian isn’t thinking too hard about what is next for his platinum-selling, arena-filling other band. Two of his cohorts — guitarist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan — released their debut as Scars on Broadway last month (Serj has the record, but hasn’t listened to the whole thing yet), and Tankian says the timing just made sense to take an indefinite breather. “You shouldn’t have to wait until people are not buying your records or your tickets for you to stop, I think that’s ridiculous,” he said. “So I think you should do it when it’s the right time, when it makes sense artistically and personally. It’s a hiatus, we’re all friends

On the Charts: Sugarland Beats Out Miley For Top SpotThe Big News: A week after running-up to Miley Cyrus, country band Sugarland overtook the teen sensation to claim the number one spot as their Love on the Inside pushed 171,000 in its second week. Cyrus’ Breakout settled for second, selling another 162,000 copies. The top five was rounded out by the usual suspects, with the Mamma Mia soundtrack, Kid Rock’s Rock N Roll Jesus and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III claiming the remaining places. Weezy’s TC3 also pushed past the two million sales after eight weeks on the charts. Debuts: Praise rockers Third Day led a relatively weak crop of debuts, selling 74,000 to lock up sixth place. The fourteenth installment of the venerable Kidz Bop series grabbed eight. System of a Down side project Scars on Broadway took 17 with their self-titled debut, Rick Springfield managed to claim 28 with his new album Venus in Overdrive and Alice Cooper’s Along Came a Spider crept in at 53. Last Week’s Heroes: Same last week’s heroes as last week, except they sold a lot less copies this time around. The top five all stayed in the top five with some reshuffling. Despite a 45% drop in sales from the previous week, Sugarland still somehow claimed the top spot, likely because Miley Cyrus dropped 56% in sales. Only Kid Rock managed to stave off any percentile decrease with sales up 3% and a firm hold on the four slot in its astonishing 43rd week on the chart. [Photo: Miller/Getty]

Scars on Broadway Show Off “Crazy Energy” at Los Angeles Train StationOn Monday night, singer-guitarist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan of System of a Down gave fans another vivid glimpse of their new band, Scars on Broadway, at a special show at Los Angeles Union Station, a 1930s-era landmark in the band’s hometown. On the eve of today’s release of their self-titled Interscope debut, Scars on Broadway performed a 40-minute set in the monumental north wing of the train station, as fans moshed on a dancefloor of polished marble and clay. It was only the band’s ninth show ever, following a brief promotional tour of Europe and sets at Coachella, KROQ’s Weenie Roast, a benefit in L.A. with Metallica, and its unannounced April debut at the Whisky a-Go-Go. In the band’s trailer before the show, drummer John Dolmayan said, “We’ve got something special. We’ve got a good live vibe. The energy is crazy. We’re playing with three guys that are very hungry, and we’re very hungry.” The show-closing rocker “They Say” was well-known to the crowd after months of local radio airplay, but the set also introduced several contemplative, angry hard rock songs from the new album. The crowd clapped along to the anxious beat of “Chemicals,” and Malakian opened his arms wide during “Universe,” looking up and singing, “Mother, are we flying through the universe? Are we dying in the universe?” After a driving, dreamy “Enemy,” Malakian’s floppy hat and mirrored shades flew off during the headbanging instrumental “Scars on Broadway,” which is not on the new album and can only be heard live (and maybe on YouTube) as the band riffs through some thundering, Sabbath-like gloom. Malakian’s eyes widened as he wailed the high-tension “Whoring Streets,” and one fan held up an Armenian flag of red, blue and orange. He then began an impromptu take on “China Girl” (the David Bowie/Iggy Pop standard), singing and playing alone on guitar and adjusting the lyrics: “I’ll give you a man who wants to fuck the world!” He was soon joined by guitarist Franky Perez doing his

Coachella Day Two: Mark Ronson, Cold War Kids, Hot Chip, Kate Nash and More “Things could be much worse,” sang Cold War Kids frontman Nathan Willett as a sizable hometown California crowd assembled in front of the main stage in the height of the Saturday heat, and he meant it. The band finished up “We Used to Vacation” with guitarist Jonnie Russell slapping a cymbal with a yellow maraca, tested out some new material and performed their stellar cover of “Hang Me Up to Dry,” with Willett breaking away from the mike to pound away at his keyboard. Meanwhile at the Gobi tent, Bonde de Role was stirring up a Brazilian dance party, dropping rhymes over the music from Grease’s “Summer Nights” and filling in for any language gaps with “bah bah bah”s and “chi chi cha”s. An hour later and a tent away, Kate Nash and a tight four-piece band wowed a massive crowd that ranged from teenage girls to muscle-bound men. Perched a keyboard decorated with a drape of red fabric, Nash gently tipped out of her chair with excitement, crooning witty tracks like her single “Foundations” in her endearing British accent and ending nearly every song with mini rave-ups that transformed her neat little tunes into something refreshing and wild. An even bigger (and more aggressive) crowd was busy cramming itself into the Sahara tent for British electro outfit Hot Chip. Despite the 100-degree temperatures, singer Alexis Taylor emerged in a shirt, tie and light-colored jacket to the sounds of “Shake a Fist,” as the group gave the song a clubby overhaul, packing the track with loopy keyboards. Crazed fans climbing the sides of the tent gyrated madly as the band delivered nearly an hour of melodic, smart dance music. At the exact same time, just a day after singer Serj Tankian performed a solo Coachella set, his System of a Down bandmates Daron Malakian (singer-guitarist) and John Dolmayan (drums) debuted their new band, Scars on Broadway. Few outside the obsessive SOAD fan co

Daron Malakian Cancels Scars On Broadway Tour, TV AppearancePhoto: Vasquez/Getty Scars On Broadway have canceled their North American tour after singer/guitarist Daron Malakian decided “his heart wasn’t into touring” with the side project, the band said in a statement. The collaboration between Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan had planned to embark on their tour on October 19th, but the trek, and the duo’s Jimmy Kimmel Live performance on October 14th, have both been canceled with no plans for rescheduling. With the Scars tour off, rumors are already circulating that this move might foreshadow a reunion for System Of A Down, as the band was in hiatus as Malakian and Serj Tankian both pursued extracurricular musical activities.
