- Yet another Scorpions greatest hits compilation

The Scorpions are probably my all-time favorite rock band, releasing a number of catchy tunes over the years like "Rock You Like A Hurricane", "No One Like You", "Still Loving You" and "Wind Of Change".

But lately, for some reason, the band seems to want to release a Greatest Hits package right after releasing a new studio album.

Check out the history:

Face The Heat - studio album, last one under the Mercury label, released 1993

Pure Instinct - studio album, under the Atlantic label, released 1996

Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years - greatest hits, released 1997

Eye To Eye - studio album, released 1999

Moment Of Glory - "remakes" album recorded with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, released 2000

Bad For Good: The Very Best Of Scorpions - greatest hits, released 2002

Box Of Scorpions - greatest hits, released May 2004

Unbreakable - studio album, released June 2004

Platinum Collection - greatest hits, released October 2005

At one time in my posession, I owned the "Deadly Sting" set, the "Bad for Good" disc and yet another "Best Of" disc, the "Best of Rockers and Ballads". Then, one day, I saw the "Box Of Scorpions" sitting in the Scorpions bin at my local CD store. That was it! I decided to sell all my greatest hits and "Best Of" sets and purchase this new "Box".

And now, here we are again, with yet another box set. Suffice to say I will not sell off the "Box of Scorpions" and purchase this "Platinum Collection". The reason? Because of Disc 3.

5 tracks from "Pure Instinct" (You And I, Does Anybody Know, Wild Child, Where The River Flows, When You Came Into My Life): Sorry but that's just way too many songs from a sub-par album. Maybe "Wild Child" stays; that's it.

Edge Of Time: This song originally appeared as a bonus track on a limited release of the "Live Bites" album. OK, I can see this here only because it's different, but then again, is it really worthy of being part of a "Platinum Collection"?

5 tracks from "Eye To Eye" (A Moment In A Million Years, 10 Light Years Away, Eye To Eye, Mysterious, Aleyah):

Again, WAY TOO MANY TRACKS FROM A SUB-PAR ALBUM. How can you justify having the same amount of songs from this album as you do from Blackout and Love At First Sting. Totally unbelievable. The only song worth having here is "Mysterious"

The track representation from "Moment Of Glory" (2 tracks) and "Unbreakable" (3 tracks) is acceptable.

The first 2 discs contain the best songs from the Scorpions best years, but you're not buying a 2-disc set here; you're buying a 3-disc set. The poor selection of songs on the third disc brings my rating down from "5" to "3".

The bottom line from this reviewer is:

Save yourself some money and avoid this collection, unless you're a serious Scorpions fan. Even for the average or curious fan, this a very uneven representation of what the Scorpions are all about. For these types of fans, I recommend the "Box Of Scorpions" 3-disc set or the "Deadly Sting" 2-disc set.
