Weekend Rock List: One Album Wonders

When we heard Wolfmother split up after a lone album together, we pondered other bands that released a great debut before calling it a day (Andrew Stockdale says his Aussie band will carry on, however). Whether they were a one-off supergroup or just a bunch of folks who couldn’t get along, tell us your favorite One Album Wonders and we’ll tally the votes. Obama's Secret Record Collection

When Barack Obama moved into the White House on January 20th, he gained access to five chefs, a private bowling alley — and a killer collection of classic LPs. Stored in the basement of the executive mansion is the official White House Record Library: several hundred LPs that include landmark albums in rock (Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed), punk (the Ramones' Rocket to Russia, the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols), cult classics (Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, the Flying Burrito Brothers' The Gilded Palace of Sin) and disco. Not to mention records by Santana, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Isaac Hayes, Elton John, the Cars and Barry Manilow.

So, John Lydon: Will There Be a Public Image Ltd. Reunion?

There’s been a lot of hubub today about Johnny Rotten’s fight with Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke backstage at a Barcelona festival. So much talk has been devoted to accusations of racism and details of the melee that few are focusing on what began the spat: Okereke supposedly walked up to Lydon and asked him about the possibility of a Public Image Ltd. reunion. Accounts differ on what happened after this, but who cares? It’s a perfectly legitimate inquiry. The Sex Pistols put on a fine show these days, but seeing as they only have one album to draw from the set list is pretty limited. PiL lasted 14 years and eight albums. Jah Wobble and the many, many other PiL alumi certainly have the time to get back onstage — and who wouldn’t want to hear “Rise” live again? So, Johnny, what do you think? To help boost struggling sales, EMI may re-release albums by many of their veteran artists, including David Bowie and Pink Floyd. Coldplay have announced their first show of 2008: a headlining gig at Osaka, Japan’s Summer Sonic festival on August 9th. The fest also boasts the Sex Pistols, the Verve, Panic at the Disco and many more. Kenny Chesney leads the pack with eleven nominations at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards, to be held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on May 18th. Despite rumors yesterday, actress Winona Ryder is not engaged to Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett, Ryder’s rep tells Us.

David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Turns 35, Beck Hits the Studio, Ray Davies Loses His Day in Court

Everyone’s going milestone crazy. Rolling Stone is honoring Appetite for Destruction’s 20th birthday, the Sex Pistols are getting ready for Never Mind the Bollocks to hit the three-decade mark, and everyone can celebrate the 35th anniversary of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust by voting in the new album cover contest on his Web site. Our favorite: number thirty-nine’s post-modern take on the iconic Bowie image. Comedian Zack Galifianakis reminisces about that time he and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy went down to the farm and lip-synched to Kanye West. The man who shot the Kinks’ Ray Davies in New Orleans in 2004 has had the charges against him dropped due to Davies’ failure to make it to court (Davies says the district attorney didn’t notify him in time). Beck and Jamie Lidell are sharing studio time while recording on a direct-to-disc device. To honor Gene Simmons’ birthday, the minor league baseball team Brockton Rox will pay homage to his band Kiss on August 25. The team will don Kiss-inspired uniforms and, if we’re lucky, the starting pitcher will paint his face like Ace Frehley.

Sex Pistols Reissue Bollocks, Warped Organizer Dismisses Free Ozzfest, Wilco Add Tour Dates

The Sex Pistols will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction by honoring the 30th anniversary of their own seminal album Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols. The album will be reissued on vinyl with the “Submission” 7″ on Oct 29, thirty years to the day of its original release. Throughout October, Virgin Records will also release four replica 7″ singles from that debut album. Warped Tour organizer Kevin Lyman calls this year’s free Ozzfest “a ploy.” Wilco have announced additional dates for their East Coast-shirking fall tour. Apple sold nearly 10 million iPods last year, helping Steve Jobs accomplish a 73 percent overall rise in sales. And that’s without factoring in iPhones. Rough Trade Records, proud home of the Smiths and the Libertines, will join Matador and 4AD under the Beggars Group corporate umbrella.
