Coachella Day Two: Mark Ronson, Cold War Kids, Hot Chip, Kate Nash and More “Things could be much worse,” sang Cold War Kids frontman Nathan Willett as a sizable hometown California crowd assembled in front of the main stage in the height of the Saturday heat, and he meant it. The band finished up “We Used to Vacation” with guitarist Jonnie Russell slapping a cymbal with a yellow maraca, tested out some new material and performed their stellar cover of “Hang Me Up to Dry,” with Willett breaking away from the mike to pound away at his keyboard. Meanwhile at the Gobi tent, Bonde de Role was stirring up a Brazilian dance party, dropping rhymes over the music from Grease’s “Summer Nights” and filling in for any language gaps with “bah bah bah”s and “chi chi cha”s. An hour later and a tent away, Kate Nash and a tight four-piece band wowed a massive crowd that ranged from teenage girls to muscle-bound men. Perched a keyboard decorated with a drape of red fabric, Nash gently tipped out of her chair with excitement, crooning witty tracks like her single “Foundations” in her endearing British accent and ending nearly every song with mini rave-ups that transformed her neat little tunes into something refreshing and wild. An even bigger (and more aggressive) crowd was busy cramming itself into the Sahara tent for British electro outfit Hot Chip. Despite the 100-degree temperatures, singer Alexis Taylor emerged in a shirt, tie and light-colored jacket to the sounds of “Shake a Fist,” as the group gave the song a clubby overhaul, packing the track with loopy keyboards. Crazed fans climbing the sides of the tent gyrated madly as the band delivered nearly an hour of melodic, smart dance music. At the exact same time, just a day after singer Serj Tankian performed a solo Coachella set, his System of a Down bandmates Daron Malakian (singer-guitarist) and John Dolmayan (drums) debuted their new band, Scars on Broadway. Few outside the obsessive SOAD fan co

"Fur & Gold" by Bat for LashesBack in the '80s and early '90s, there seemed to be an endless supply of witchy women—Tori Amoses, Kate Bushes, and Bjorks (oh my)—but they've since been de-fanged, redressed in Joanna Newsom's Renaissance faire garb or Evanescence's aggro-posturing. On Fur and Gold, her debut as alter-ego Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan carries the torch for her mystic sisters, draping her moody pop with the sort of echoey, gothic pianos, harpsichords and autoharps that evoke a castle tower filled with candles in mid-melt. And yet, there's something missing—Khan affects the pose, but can't quite muster the conviction and lyrical elegance the genre requires. It's hard to put one's finger on, but Khan's coy vocals seem just a tad too Bjork-like to be convincingly her own, her lyrics alternately too generic (the chorus of "Trophy" monotonously repeats the old chestnut "heaven is a feeling I get in your arms") or too implausibly freaky (the album

Mercury Prize Nominees: Rock Daily’s Fave NewcomersEarlier today, nominees were announced for the U.K.’s Mercury prize, which is sort of like the Grammy for Album of the Year, only with better artists and no de facto requirement that you’ve moved a million units. You already know the frontrunners, including Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal and Arctic Monkeys, who won the Mercury last year. But there are some fairly obscure names on the list — like Breaking Artist Bat for Lashes. So here’s a primer for the non-Anglophiles out there: Rock Daily’s favourite Mercury newcomers. Maps Who: James Chapman, a one-man-band from Northampton, England. Sounds Like: Maps’ debut, We Can Create, is full of lush, atmospheric pop that recalls My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless — only warmer and less noisy. Fun Fact: Chapman recorded the album in his bedroom, mostly on a sixteen-track recorder. Jamie T Who: Twenty-two-year-old London singer-songwriter Jamie Treays. Sounds Like: Treays’ debut, Panic Prevention, is long on tuneful, sharp-witted character sketches and charming, ramshackle tunes built on keyboards and samplers. The album has been compared to both the Streets and Badly Drawn Boy. Fun Fact: Treays has self-released a series of mixtapes called Panic Prevention Disco, which have included songs by Primal Scream, Kate Bush and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The View Who: Scottish quartet whose debut, Hats Off to the Buskers, debuted at number one on the English pop charts early this year. Sounds Like: Bright, spiky Britpop with action-packed grooves and sweet melodies — like a more cuddly version of the Artcic Monkeys. Fun Fact: The View got initial exposure opening for Babyshambles this year after Pete Doherty saw them busking outside one of his gigs in Scotland. New Young Pony Club Who: London quintet who debuted this year with Fantastic Playroom. Sounds Like: Popwise, danceable electro-rock — something like LCD Soundsystem, or what Brit kids call “New Rave.” Fun Fact: NYPC were introduced t

Pete Best Wants To Reminisce With Paul McCartney, Keith Richards Warns Pete About Kate, Fall Out Boy’s Various Issues After forty years spent thinking about what might have been, ejected former Beatle Pete Best has said he’s finally ready to make peace with Paul. “We’re not getting any younger,” he said. “We know what we’ve done and we’re not going to think any worse of each other if we had a chat now. God bless us all: it was all 40-odd years ago.” In a recent interview with the NME, Keith Richards apparently described Kate Moss as someone he knows “very well” and went on to say that Doherty should leave her alone before implying that Kate is dangerous force in the lives of the rocker boys she dates. “He (Doherty) should shut the fuck up and leave her alone,” Richards said. “I don’t know the man. All I know is he’s pushing his luck and there it is. But so is Kate … Kate wants to play with the bad boys and she’s done one, then another, then another. She’ll live, the boys will die.” Last week Fall Out Boy were postponing the start of their tour because of “personal issues.” This week the band has posted another vagary-filled statement saying that it’s all about health. “it [sic] is in the best interest of the health of the band and its members to take just a couple weeks to catch up,” the statement reads. Fall Out Boy sure know how to talk a lot while saying nothing. Eminem may write arguably misogynist, homophobic, hatred-filled rhymes, but the rapper proved he’s something of a traditional gentleman after he rear-ended a woman while driving his Mercedes in Fraser, Michigan. Eminem reportedly got out of his car, joked and laughed with the woman while exchanging insurance information, and gave her a hug before getting back in his car and driving off. White Wedding, No ShowersKate Moss is planning a traditional white wedding. The supermodel - who got engaged to rocker lover Jamie Hince last month - is finalizing details for the summer nuptials and wants them to be completely different from the commitment ceremony she had with ex-boyfriend Pete Doherty last year. A source told Grazia magazine: "Kate and Pete's blessing in Thailand was only attended by a few people as no one really approved of them getting married. But all her friends love Jamie, as does her mother Linda. "At the moment, she says she wants a white wedding at the little church in her village in the Cotswolds. She wants something typically English, with lots of flowers and her daughter, Lila, as bridesmaid." Kate - who began dating The Kills guitarist last August - is also deciding which lucky designer gets to create her bridal dress. The source added: "Kate is very close to a number of British designers, including John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, but she wants to take her time deciding. However, she has said she wants something simple that reflects the English countryside theme. She might even go for something vintage." Kate Moss gets soaked on 'Jurassic Park' The Ride at Universal Studios in L.A (04/07/08).

Kate Bosworth is So Over Orlando
After break-up from Orlando Bloom, Kate Bosworth needed something to take her mind off her romantic woes. So, she threw herself into her work, her latest film, "The Girl in the Park," in which she plays the long-lost daughter of Sigourney Weaver's character. The role was an emotional one and helped Kate exorcise some demons.
"Last year was difficult on many levels, and this film was very therapeutic for me. I was able to have a cathartic experience through this character. I was grieving quite a few things."
I'm guessing that model boyfriend of hers (James Rousseau) probably had a little something to do with uplifting Kate's spirits. In addition, I must comment that I'm digging her mod-French outfit here. It's oh, so Foux Da Fa Fa.

VigilsLegit Reviews: Playwright Noah Haidle continues his string of imaginative parables with "Vigils," a simple, sweet exploration of human memory and grief. Directed with sensitive flair by Kate Whoriskey in its premiere at Chi's Goodman Theater, the likable but slight show emanates plenty of whimsical melancholy and warm-heartedness, even if it never deepens in tone or substance into something more forceful.
