Single Minded: New Britney Spears, Plus Ben Lee Covers Against Me!, The Go! Team Covers Sonic Youth, The Killers Take On Joy Division, and De La Soul Meets NKOTB Britney Spears, [Untitled New Song] Britney coos, “Why did you desert me, baby boy?” while an infant’s musical mobile twinkles in the background. And you thought irony was dead. Ben Lee, “White People for Peace” [Against Me! Covers] Ben Lee covers the entire new Against Me! record, quietly, from start-to-finish. Imagine if instead he liked Rihanna? The Go! Team, “Bull in the Heather” [Sonic Youth Cover] British buzz band turn weird Sonic Youth single into weird Go! Team single. Now let’s see them take a crack at “The Diamond Sea.” The Killers, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You/Shadowplay” [Live Frankie Valli/Joy Division Cover] Brandon Flowers and Co. pull off the estimable feat of aggravating two generations at once. If only they’d worked in Fall Out Boy for the trifecta. De La Soul/New Kids on the Block, “Jenifa Taught Me/Step By Step” [Mash-up] Humbly suggests that if we’d had the Internet in the Eighties, we’d be doing the same stupid stuff we’re doing with it now.

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily We confirmed that the controversial Van Halen reunion tour with David Lee Roth is back on (check back Monday for updates from the group’s press conference in Los Angeles). Rolling Stone got a sneak peek at Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, then we all checked out some photos of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere in character. Pearl Jam pointed out that Eddie Vedder’s anti-Bush ad-libs were suspiciously missing from the AT&T Webcast of their Lollapalooza set. Plus, Rock Daily documented the festival with video highlights from some of the best sets, a photo gallery of the hottest performances, footage of Patti Smith and Jeff Tweedy hanging out and twice-daily reports straight from Grant Park. Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore told us how much he enjoys noise rock and Yoko Ono, while My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way professed his love of Joan of Arc, David Bowie and squids. Hello, Brooklyn! The New York borough hosted some major shows: Lauryn Hill resurfaced in Crown Heights, Daft Punk grooved in Coney Island and Beastie Boys rocked the mic in Greenpoint.

‘I’m Not There’ Photos: Heath Ledger and Richard Gere as Bob Dylan As you may have noticed, Rock Daily is following the progress of Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There pretty closely. Last summer our collective minds were blown by eerily spot-on photos of Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan. We visited the film’s Montreal set, then checked out the first clip to leak from the film, which features Blanchett’s Dylan conversing with Allen Ginsberg, played by David Cross. Most recently, we were treated to a special screening of I’m Not There, where we learned about performances by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Sonic Youth. And now we’ve stumbled upon two more photos from the set, of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere in character as Dylan.

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan film, ‘I’m Not There’ Sometimes, life is good: Last night Rolling Stone got an exclusive screening of the new Todd Haynes film I’m Not There in which six actors portray Bob Dylan. We’re pretty much sworn to secrecy, but can’t resist giving you a few highlights: • Cate Blanchett as Dylan, meeting Brian Jones at a party and calling the Rolling Stones a “groovy covers band,” then screaming “play your old stuff” at a statue of Jesus Christ alongside David Cross as Allen Ginsberg. • Christian Bale as the late-’70s born-again Dylan, sermonizing about Christ and delivering the hidden Dylan gospel classic “Pressing On,” from Saved, sung by John Doe. • My Morning Jacket’s Jim James’ heartbreaking rendition of the basement tapes chestnut “Goin’ to Acapulco” in full Rolling Thunder Review white face. • Sonic Youth’s brilliant version of the unreleased Dylan classic “I’m Not There” from the basement tapes session that plays during the closing credits. R. Kelly Trial Controversy Begins, Panic! at the Disco Go Simple, Courtney Love Faces Off With Lily Allen in MySpaceland The girl that allegedly appears in the infamous R. Kelly sex tape will testify on behalf of R. Kelly when his trial begins September 17th. The girl, whose name is still being withheld even though she’s a young woman now, will tell the court that she is not the person in the blurry tape. The prosecution has lined up testimony from family, friends, family friends, and family of the friends that will say under oath that it is in fact the nameless young woman in the video, who was only fourteen at the time. Panic! at the Disco are stressing simplicity on their new album, which will hopefully result in shorter song titles. John Mellencamp, Kelly Clarkson and Faith Hill will help kick off the NFL season by performing before the Colts/Saints game in Indianapolis on September 6th. The Hives have named their new album The Black And White Album, but they still haven’t named a release date. We’re already calling this disc The Oreo Album. After Lily Allen dissed Courtney Love on her MySpace blog and blamed it on hackers, Courtney Love got her revenge by dissing Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

Postscript: Farewell to Lee Hazlewood In 1966 Lee Hazlewood — who died at 78 of kidney cancer at his Las Vegas home this Saturday — instructed a teenage Nancy Sinatra to sing his composition “These Boots Are Made For Walking” like a “sixteen-year-old girl who fucks truck drivers.” The result was the most successful work of Hazlewood’s career, but was hardly alone among the man’s many accomplishments. Hazlewood started his career in the early 1950s as a DJ in Coolidge, Arizona. Shortly afterwards he became interested in producing records and hooked up with guitar legend Duane Eddy, with whom he crafted the 1958 hit “Rebel Rouser.” In the mid-1960s he began producing Nancy Sinatra records, including her number-one hit “Somethin’ Stupid.” His commercial career waned in the 1970s, but by the 1990s he had become a cult hero. In recent years his songs have been covered by Primal Scream, Megadeath and Nick Cave. Recently, Sonic Youth reissued many of his early albums. In 2003 Hazlewood teamed up again with Nancy Sinatra again for the album Nancy & Lee 3, which they supported with a tour. His final album, Cake or Death, was released last December.

Lucinda Williams To Perform Full Albums During Mini-TourEarlier this week Rock Daily celebrated the resiliency of the album, noting how Slint, Sonic Youth and Wu-Tang’s GZA are playing full albums live this summer. Now comes word that alt-country poetess Lucinda Williams will perform five of her eight studio albums, one night at a time, from start to finish in the fall. Williams will take over Los Angeles’ El Rey Theater September 5-6 and 8-10, then head to New York to play September 29-30 at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza and October 2-4 at Town Hall. On the first night of each run, Williams will perform the entirety of her 2003 record World Without Tears. Each subsequent night will feature one of the following albums: 1998’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, 2001’s Essence, 1990’s Sweet Old World and 1988’s Lucinda Williams. The singer-songwriter plans to follow each full-album performance with a separate, more free-form set.

The Album Is Dead! Long Live the Album! As record sales continue to tank by the week, artists and fans are getting crazy nostalgic for the halcyon days of the disc. But maybe the death of the full-length LP has been greatly exaggerated: Could the album actually be waging a comeback? The new video game Rock Band will feature entire albums as templates for aspiring rockers. First up is the Who’s Who’s Next. Metallica, who’ve long resisted putting their music online, will include “Enter Sandman,” with more tracks available in the future. Last weekend at the Pitchfork Music Festival, three headliners performed albums in their entirety: drone-rockers Slint revisted their 1991 cult classic Spiderland, Sonic Youth tore through their 1988 noise-rock masterpiece Daydream Nation and Wu-Tang rapper GZA unleashed his 1995 album Liquid Swords. Reissues are coming out at ridiculous rates. Some are records we thought we bought just yesterday, like Foo Fighters’ repackaging of their 1997 disc The Colour and the Shape. iTunes has been offering up full albums for sale at bargain-bin rates (well, $5.99 and $6.99), focusing on Next Big Thing artists like LCD Soundsystem.

Sonic Youth Rock New York Apple Store With “Eternal” GemsPhoto: Von Holden/GettyIf you hung out in New York’s Soho neighborhood in the early 1980s, chances are you could’ve caught an early Sonic Youth performing in an avant-garde loft space. A lot has changed in the last three decades. Last night, to celebrate the release of their terrific new album The Eternal, the indie-rock heroes returned to the now-gentrified neighborhood to perform a short-but-sweet set at the Apple store. Of course, the vibe was a little weird: Sonic Youth are more suited to p

Sonic Youth, John Paul Jones Give Merce Cunningham’s Dance Show a Fierce SoundtrackPhoto: Stephanie Berger Although you could hear the eerie, creeping and tantalizing sounds being made by Sonic Youth, legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Takehisa Kosugi at the start of their performance at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music Saturday night, you could not see them. The eclectic group of musicians were silhouetted behind a large white canvas while the youthful fit dancers of the Merce Cunningham dance company cavorted, leaped and spun around on the stage in front
