Sonic Youth, John Paul Jones Give Merce Cunningham’s Dance Show a Fierce SoundtrackPhoto: Stephanie Berger Although you could hear the eerie, creeping and tantalizing sounds being made by Sonic Youth, legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Takehisa Kosugi at the start of their performance at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music Saturday night, you could not see them. The eclectic group of musicians were silhouetted behind a large white canvas while the youthful fit dancers of the Merce Cunningham dance company cavorted, leaped and spun around on the stage in front

A Concert Gimmick We Can SupportLast year, Roger Waters mounted a tour in which he performed all of Dark Side Of the Moon in concert from start to finish. Then in December, Lou Reed caused a hubbub performing the entirety of his 1973 album Berlin live in Brooklyn. Now indie rockers are joining in on the fun. Just today we got word that beloved indie rock band Slint will do the same thing with their hugely influential 1991 album Spiderland for a number of dates this summer; Sonic Youth is jumping on the bandwagon too, playing

Rock List: Readers’ Best Beatles Covers Last week, looking to wash out memories of two scarring weeks of Lennon/McCartney disasters on American Idol, we asked our readers for their favorite Beatles cover versions. Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily We confirmed that the controversial Van Halen reunion tour with David Lee Roth is back on (check back Monday for updates from the group’s press conference in Los Angeles). Rolling Stone got a sneak peek at Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, then we all checked out some photos of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere in character. Pearl Jam pointed out that Eddie Vedder’s anti-Bush ad-libs were suspiciously missing from the AT&T Webcast of their Lollapalooza set. Plus, Rock Daily documented the festival with video highlights from some of the best sets, a photo gallery of the hottest performances, footage of Patti Smith and Jeff Tweedy hanging out and twice-daily reports straight from Grant Park. Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore told us how much he enjoys noise rock and Yoko Ono, while My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way professed his love of Joan of Arc, David Bowie and squids. Hello, Brooklyn! The New York borough hosted some major shows: Lauryn Hill resurfaced in Crown Heights, Daft Punk grooved in Coney Island and Beastie Boys rocked the mic in Greenpoint.

‘I’m Not There’ Photos: Heath Ledger and Richard Gere as Bob Dylan As you may have noticed, Rock Daily is following the progress of Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There pretty closely. Last summer our collective minds were blown by eerily spot-on photos of Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan. We visited the film’s Montreal set, then checked out the first clip to leak from the film, which features Blanchett’s Dylan conversing with Allen Ginsberg, played by David Cross. Most recently, we were treated to a special screening of I’m Not There, where we learned about performances by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Sonic Youth. And now we’ve stumbled upon two more photos from the set, of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere in character as Dylan.

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan film, ‘I’m Not There’ Sometimes, life is good: Last night Rolling Stone got an exclusive screening of the new Todd Haynes film I’m Not There in which six actors portray Bob Dylan. We’re pretty much sworn to secrecy, but can’t resist giving you a few highlights: • Cate Blanchett as Dylan, meeting Brian Jones at a party and calling the Rolling Stones a “groovy covers band,” then screaming “play your old stuff” at a statue of Jesus Christ alongside David Cross as Allen Ginsberg. • Christian Bale as the late-’70s born-again Dylan, sermonizing about Christ and delivering the hidden Dylan gospel classic “Pressing On,” from Saved, sung by John Doe. • My Morning Jacket’s Jim James’ heartbreaking rendition of the basement tapes chestnut “Goin’ to Acapulco” in full Rolling Thunder Review white face. • Sonic Youth’s brilliant version of the unreleased Dylan classic “I’m Not There” from the basement tapes session that plays during the closing credits.
