Silversun Pickups, Airborne Toxic Event, St. Vincent Score New Fans at SXSWOpening Metallica’s not-so-secret SXSW surprise show Friday night, Los Angeles buzz band Silversun Pickups had the gig of a lifetime. And they knew it: drummer Chris Guanlao couldn’t resist taking a snap of the crowd with his digital camera. Winning over approximately 2,000 very antsy Metallica fans is no easy task — especially for a band whose sound is rooted in mid-’90s alternative rock. “It’s coming, I promise,” said frontman Brian Aubert to the salivating Metallica fans parked at the front of the stage. “The Spin Doctors are coming.” With a fuzzy, glowing sound like a meanderthal version of Smashing Pumpkins, the Pickups won over the crowd almost instantly — cheers after the first song and a few pumped fists by the end. When they kicked into the raucous conclusion of “Lazy Eye,” the big single from their debut Carnavas, it became clear how the band’s new album keeps the power cranking nonstop. (Check out some of Silversun’s set, above.) (For more photos live from SXSW, check out our gallery.) Earlier in the day, America’s most prolific riff merchants, the Hold Steady, kicked off their Club DeVille’s set with Separation Sunday’s “Hornets! Hornets!,” before launching into “Sequestered in Memphis,” from their latest album, Stay Positive. The small stage didn’t provide the gregarious Craig Finn a lot of room to spazz out, but he did his best with what he had, flailing his arms and holding up his hands beside his head like an indie-rock Richard Nixon. Meanwhile offstage, bromance was blooming, as groups of male buddies linked arms and hopped up and down. Later that night, Los Angeles’ Airborne Toxic Event had Ace’s Lounge packed to the rafters (special thanks to the club’s owner for sneaking Rock Daily in). The band was dressed dapper and had sharp tunes to match, churning out introspective rock that wasn’t afraid to shake its booty. Violist Anna Bulbrook wandered into the crowd and onto an amp, but bassist Noah Harmon took the biggest leap of faith, jumping off hi

Kerry Katona’s WAWR On WaterIT’S been a restless night for Kerry Katona’s fan. Yesterday’s front-page news in the Mirror that Kerry might be suffering from pre-eclampsia – “which kills 10 mums and 1,000 babies every year” – was a shock. But today the paper bring news that Kerry will not be the celebrity face of pre-eclampsia but more likely a spokesperson for Women Against Water Retention (WAWR). Tests show that Kerry has “severe water retention”. Speaking from her hospital bed in Warrington, Cheshire, Kerry, 27, tells those spin doctors gathered about her bed: “When the midwife said what it could be, it was a huge worry. It’s such a relief to know the baby is fine and my little boy is doing really well.” Kerry will now be on diet of neat gin to reduce her waters…

Madeleine McCann And Shannon Matthews: Paul Routledge’s Media DebateMADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann and Shannon Matthews DAILY MIRROR: “Class snobs taint hunt for Shannon” Paul Routledge says: “Her stepfather Craig Meehan is right to say that being working-class is a factor in this case.” Shannon Matthews went missing because she is from a working class family? Compare the treatment of Shannon with the hype surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal last year. It pays to be middle-class when your daughter vanishes. How? Madeleine McCann has not been found. How does losing a child pay? The Mirror told us it was the biggest manhunt since the Yorkshire Ripper? Is the police effort not as important to solving a mystery as the media’s comments on it? Huge sums of money flooded into the campaign to find Maddy. Spin doctors, including former TV newscaster Clarence Mitchell, were hired to manipulate the media. The McCanns, young, smartly-dressed, articulate and professional, became overnight celebrities. They flew to America, Scandinavia and to Rome where they met the Pope. In contrast, Shannon’s mother Karen and her partner have been treated almost like lepers. A snooty BBC radio interviewer was keen to find out if she had had seven children by six fathers. Seven children by six fathers… Why does Mr Routledge find a need to repeat that fact? If the McCanns have a spin doctor does it matter if the press refuse to listen to him, decline to repeat his words? Routledge writes in the Mirror, the paper that in the maw of the McCann feeding frenzy told us of “creepy” Robert Murat and placed a yellow ribbon on its masthead. No ribbon now. Not for Shannon Matthews. He says: “God grant they find her safe and well. But this case brings to the surface some unpalatable facts that many would prefer not to face.” No kidding… (more…)
