Status Quo are a musical joke to a lot of people. Why? Because they haven't changed that much over the years according to those who "hate" them, and besides, they're not cool or hip, and they seem to not have any fan under the age of 30. Well, some of these things are true, but in the mid 1970's Status Quo were huge (at least in Europe) with their musical style that was sort of a boogie version of bands like Nazareth and Slade. They were no geeks then...
This CD release contain two LP's, namely "Quo" from 1974, and "Blue for you" from 1976. On the former "Quo" you will certainly not hear anything like the sickly-sweet "Marguerita time" because here you get a hard rocking band, and "Quo" is probably the guys hardest and heaviest release ever. When I listen to this album I tend to think a bit of Lenny Kravitz's "Are you gonna go my way". Not that you'll find a copy of that song but the structure and approach is somewhat similar. Many of the songs are interesting, like the frantic drum driven "Just take me", the bluesy "Break the rules", the hard rocking pairs "Drifting away" and "Don't think it matters", the country rock inspired "Fine fine fine". This is a great example of good rock in the 1970's.
The other part of the CD is "Blue for you", an album that isn't quite as hard rocking. By 1976 Status Quo had more or less found the sound and songwriting style they're most famous for. But the opening song "Is there a better way" is absolutely a hard rocker. "Mad about the boy", "Ring of change" and "Rolling home" (not the same "Rolling home" Status Quo recorded several years later) are all typical Status Quo numbers following the groovy boogie rock we got used to over the years. The title track "Blue for you" is a pleasant laid back blues inspired song while in "Rain", the band lean more towards the heavier approach featured on "Quo". "Ease your mind" is the albums most light hearted number in (lack of better comparison) Cliff Richard style (remember "Living doll"?). The closing track "Mystery song" is a long time fan favourite, with the capacity to blow the roof off the arenas Status Quo had the privilege to tour back in the old happy days.
"Quo" and "Blue for you" are two of Status Quo's best albums. If you're curious about this very under rated and often "laughed at" band, this is a good start to begin your exploring journey to the musical land of hard rocking boogie. Enjoy!
Blue for for you is one of the best rock albums of the 70's for those who like the genre - Listen to this incredibly underrated song "That's a fact" (better in your car! or full power at home!), which is never cited by any fan nor played by the band.
Two of Quos best albums on one CD ... both of which reached number 1 in the UK charts in the days when it was cool to be a denim clad Quo fan. This album gives Quo at their rockin 12 bar blues best.
