Readers’ Rock List: Bird SongsPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty In memory of Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell, the musician responsible for the famous introduction to the band’s “Free Bird” (and to honor last night’s great effort by the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl), this weekend’s Rock List was dedicated to Bird Songs. It was a heated battle between two former Super Bowl Halftime Show performers, but in the end Paul McCartney and the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird” edged out Prince and his Purple Rain gem “When Doves Cry” for the prize. To see where Alice in Chains, the Misfits and Wilco all nested, check out our Readers’ Rock List: Bird Songs below: 1. The Beatles – “Blackbird” 2. Prince – “When Doves Cry” 3. Alice In Chains – “Rooster” 4. The Beatles – “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” 5. Bob Marley – “Three Little Bird” 6. The Trashmen – “Surfin’ Bird” 7. The Beatles – “And Your Bird Can Sing” 8. Now on tour, Miller remembered Paul on Thursday with a mixture of sadness and joy. "It's a sad day," he said by phone. "He was my musical guide and my main inspiration."

Alan Livingston, Capitol Records President Who Signed the Beatles, Dead at 91Photo: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty Music industry icon Alan Livingston, the man credited with signing the Beatles during his time as president of Capitol Records, passed away on March 13th due to age-related causes. He was 91. Livingston was at the helm during a tenure that saw Capitol also sign acts like the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, the Steve Miller Band and the Band. Livingston is also noted for creating the Bozo the Clown character. According to Billboard.biz, it was Livingston who decided that the label should release the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” as a single. The record company rejected earlier singles by the Fab Four, deeming them unsuitable for America. After releasing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in 1963, Livingston brought the group over in 1964 and Beatlemania began. Livingston is also credited with reviving the career of Frank Sinatra after the Chairman of the Board saw his popularity lull in the early 1950s. Livingston recommended Sinatra work with composer Norman Riddle, resulting in songs like “I’ve Got the World on a String” and “Young-at-Heart.” Livingston is also responsible for inspiring the famed Capitol Records Tower in Los Angeles, LA Weekly reports, making that landmark the first circular office building ever constructed. Livingston received the Lifetime of Laughter Achievement Award from the Clown Hall of Fame in Milwaukee in 1998 for Bozo. Livingston is survived by his wife, actress Nancy Olsen, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1950 for her role in Sunset Boulevard, one son, one daughter and a step-daughter.

Smoking Section: The Walkmen, Steve Miller, Billy Joel“The Rat,” released by the Walkmen in 2004, is one of the greatest songs of this century. So the S.S. was stoked to get an early listen to their killer upcoming disc, You & Me, which has an equally awesome banger, “In the New Year.” The Walkmen recorded You & Me over two years at home in New York, and also in New Jersey, Philly and Mississippi. “It’s always exciting to come up with a big rocker that just works,” singer Hamilton Leithauser says about “New Year,” “because we don’t even like playing rock that much. That could be the problem: We spend so many hours playing slow waltzes.” Other You & Me cuts (”Canadian Girl,” “Red Moon”) will sound amazing live when the band storms through the U.S. in August and September. “It took everything we had to finish the record,” the singer says. “But we’re really happy with it.” We asked Leithauser for the skinny behind “The Rat.” “We were just screwin’ around,” he says. Drummer Matt Barrick kicked off a breakneck groove, and the boys joined in. “We threw some chords on it, I wrote the words in five minutes, and then we all started slammin’!” ***** We finally hit up one of Les Paul’s Monday-night gigs at the Manhattan jazz club Iridium. At age 93, Paul is still shredding. It was a special night — he welcomed his godson, Steve Miller, who sat in for “Fly Like an Eagle.” We hung with Miller during the gig (interrupted by a waiter saying, “Abracadabra!” while delivering a burger) and rolled back to his hotel, smoking stogies into the wee hours. Miller, 64, is rockin’ the USA once again, selling out sheds across the country. “The band gets hotter and hotter,” he says. “The shows have been a lot of fun.” Though he hasn’t released a fresh album since 1993’s Wide River, Miller told us of his desire to put out a new disc. After a trio of shows in March at the Fillmore in S.F., Miller was in the studio cutting 41 old blues gems. “Nothing but great tunes,” he says. “Like ‘Pretty Thing,’ by Bo Diddley; ‘No More Doggin’,’ by Rosco Gordon

Exclusive: “Guitar Hero World Tour” Adds Songs by Steve Miller, Wings, Rise AgainstPhoto: Getty Guitar Hero World Tour has already revealed an intimidating track list, and today Rock Daily can unveil another nine songs that will be included in the franchise’s latest offering. With a mix of the hyper-technical (Dream Theater), late-night stoner jams (Steve Miller), and full-on screamers (Filter), the new batch of tunes showcases a number of classics, as well as one currently climbing the rock charts: “Re-Education (Through Labor)” by Chicago punk band Rise Against. “I’ll meet one of the kids who live in my neighborhood, and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, I heard you’re in a band,’ ” Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath says. “I say, ‘Well, we’ve sold this many records and we’ve played giant shows and I’ve toured the world seven times,’ and they’re like, ‘No, I’ve never heard of your band.’ Then I say, ‘Well, I have a song in Guitar Hero,’ and they say, ‘You have a song in Guitar Hero? Are you serious?’ “ McIlrath isn’t a heavy gamer, but while some musicians give rhythm-based games grief for being just a facsimile of the real thing, he understands the appeal and even has a strategy for when he dabbles. “It’s like an interactive jukebox,” he says. “Who doesn’t want to listen to AC/DC and Heart all day? I can usually play it on ‘hard.’ I play with an actual guitar pick, and it really helps me. There’s something about the action of a pick going up and down — that’s my secret weapon.” As for the song itself, the average listener might not catch the serious lyrics from underneath the riffing and melodies, but as with most Rise Against songs, the subject matter stands in strong juxtaposition to the borderline bouncy tune (”We don’t live, we just survive on the scraps that you throw away”). “That’s always been the ace up our sleeve as a band,” McIlrath said. “We have songs that can sound good on the radio and can sound good in a video game, but we have lyrics that are still very much derivative from the hardcore and punk world that we came from. They can be very blu
