Scott Weiland Talks Axl Rose, Stone Temple Pilots Reunion Tour and More “I feel like there are only a limited amount of years where you can wear those tight jeans. There comes a point where whether you can wear them or not, you shouldn’t wear them,” Scott Weiland tells Rolling Stone. “And at a certain point, bands that have the ability to mature musically should mature musically in a graceful manner, and I see the Stone Temple Pilots as being a band that has that capacity.” Check out the most comprehensive interview Weiland has given since splitting with Velvet Revolver and announcing the reunion of Stone Temple Pilots, plus read Evan Serpick’s story about Weiland’s recent rock adventures (featuring commentary from Slash) from Issue 1053.

Slash Says Stone Temple Pilots to Reunite Stone Temple Pilots will reunite this summer, according to Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash. The top-hatted axeman told Billboard that VR lead singer Scott Weiland will rejoin with his former bandmates, two-thirds of whom have most recently been teaming up with Filter’s Richard Patrick in the band Army of Anyone, for a handful of concerts to take place this summer. Slash’s comments echoed the quotes Weiland gave to the Miami Herald earlier this week, alerting fans they should be “on the lookout for an STP reunion in the coming months.” Velvet Revolver is currently touring in support of their second album Libertad, with songs by Stone Temple Pilots and Guns n’ Roses also featured in the set list. STP broke up in 2002 following the release of their fifth album Shangri-La Dee Da. Velvet Revolver’s Scott Weiland Enters Rehab Following Velvet Revolver’s concert in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, and following his arrest for driving under the influence back in November, singer Scott Weiland voluntarily entered a rehab facility, according to a statement from the band. Weiland’s rehab stay forced the cancellation of the band’s show tonight in San Diego and jeopardizes Velvet Revolver’s planned Australian tour, even though the promoter states, “We have not been told that the tour has been affected and right now I can say that it is still 100% going ahead.” The Australia jaunt is scheduled to start February 15th, meaning that Weiland has seven days to get clean. How this affects the apparent plans for a Stone Temple Pilots reunion (and whether Weiland was just hyping an STP reunion because he was chemically altered) remain to be seen. Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily It was a busy week in the life of Stone Temple Pilot Scott Weiland: he found out he had to go to jail, talked to us about wearing tight pants, his split with Velvet Revolver and upcoming solo work and played two stellar songs on late-night TV. We did no shortage of Coachella reporting, as well as tracked the fate of Roger Waters’ pig, who clearly got around before ultimately deflating. Coachella wasn’t the only big live event, as Rock Daily also checked in on Madonna in a New York club and the Police and Elvis Costello north of the border. We also got some interesting news about the current Disturbed tour. Video was big this week, as Prince covered Radiohead, Kanye West pimped an ultra-violent Justice clip, Cobra Starship and Black Tide both took us behind the scenes and Madonna’s Hard Candy got the New Music Report treatment. Stone Temple Pilots Announce Tour, Plans For New Album The reunited Stone Temple Pilots announced the details of their sixty-five city summer tour yesterday at a press conference in Los Angeles. The tour, which will kick off May 17th in Columbus, Ohio, will roll on until November. If things go smoothly, guitarist Dean DeLeo predicted the band would start work on a new album, their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da. “The story’s not finished,” Scott Weiland said. “There’s more to be revealed and more to be told.” The band also revealed they would make their return to late night TV with an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on May 1st. (Click here to see photos of the band onstage after their big announcement.) Following the press conference, the band played a small, private half-hour show in the Hollywood Hills. It was the STP’s first live performance together in nearly six years. “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline,” were among the songs on the hits-filled setlist. Velvet Revolver on the Verge of Breaking Up? Is Velvet Revolver dissolving following their current European jaunt? Scott Weiland reportedly told a sold-out crowd in Glasgow, Scotland, that they were “watching something special… the last tour by Velvet Revolver.” According to fan reports, the rest of the band all looked at each other in confusion following Weiland’s statement. In a post today, drummer Matt Soren said “So last night was interesting. Had a little band turmoil on stage, as you probably all could tell. Being in a band is a lot like being in a relationship. Sometimes you just don’t get along. I guess there has been more turmoil lately. It has been frustrating, I am not going to lie.” Weiland spent time in a rehab center recently, forcing a postponement of the VR tour. Weiland also recently revealed plans to tour with his old band Stone Temple Pilots this summer. How the band breaking up effects guitarist’s Duff McKagan’s claim that VR will open for a potential Led Zeppelin reunion tour remains to be seen. Festival News: Stone Temple Pilots and Linkin Park in Toronto; Ozzfest Docked in Dallas? The reunited Stone Temple Pilots have added another concert to their summer tour, picking up headlining duties at this year’s Edgefest in Toronto on July 12th with Linkin Park, the Sam Roberts Band and the Bravery also on the bill. Edgefest becomes the second festival to book STP, joining Columbus, Ohio’s Rock on the Range fest on May 17th. Last month, Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash predicted Weiland would leave VR to reunite with the group that gave him his big break. The reunion seemed to be up in the air after Weiland made a trip to rehab in late January, but it was eventually confirmed with the announcement of the Ohio gig. In other festival news, reports suggest that the heavy metal road show that is Ozzfest will potentially morph into a two day non-touring event in Dallas, TX, with the titular Ozzy Osbourne as the main attraction. The going-on-thirteen-summers-old portable festival is facing additional competition this summer from the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour, which touts Disturbed as its headliner. In 2007, Ozzfest offered free admission, with concertgoers procuring tickets through sponsors’ websites. [Photo: Getty]

Scott Weiland Responds to Velvet Revolver’s Overthrow, Recommends Sebastian Bach Scott Weiland has issued a scathing statement in response to yesterday’s non-April Fool’s Joke that Velvet Revolver would continue on without its singer’s services. “I find it humorous that the so called four ‘founding members’ of Velvet Revolver would decide to move on without me after I had already claimed the group dead in the water on March 20 in Glasgow,” Weiland said. Weiland went on to remind everyone that he’s reuniting with Stone Temple Pilots, saying “I choose to look forward to the future and performing with a group of friends I have known my entire life. This also speaks to my commitment to the fans who I feel would much rather watch a group of musicians who enjoy being together as opposed to a handful of discontents who at one time used to call themselves a gang.” In one last parting shot, Weiland comments on the band’s upcoming search for a new lead singer. “Good hunting lads, I think Sebastian Bach would be a fantastic choice.” We personally cast a vote for Axl Rose, but that doesn’t seem likely. Readers’ Rock List: City Songs On Friday, Rock Daily was so inspired by a visit from Tokio Hotel that we wondered what were the finest songs that incorporated the name of a city into the title. What we discovered was that the definitive winner was British, there are way too many songs about New York and a handful of readers think California is a city and that “Paradise City” is real (only in Axl’s mind, children). Check out the twenty biggest winners below, lead by the Clash’s signature anthem “London Calling.” 1. The Clash - “London Calling” 2. Kiss - “Detroit Rock City” 3. Billy Joel - “Allentown” 4. Velvet Revolver Part Ways With Scott Weiland Due to “Erratic Onstage Behavior,” “Personal Problems” According to a press release, Velvet Revolver no longer have a lead singer. “This band is all about its fans and its music and Scott Weiland isn’t 100% committed to either,” Slash reportedly said (the group’s split with Weiland was confirmed by Sanctuary management). “Among other things, his increasingly erratic onstage behavior and personal problems have forced us to move on.” Last week, Weiland and drummer Matt Sorum engaged in a war of words via the press and blog posts, and yesterday Billboard reported that Weiland will announce a full set of tour dates with his old band, Stone Temple Pilots, on April 7th. Last week Weiland told a Glasgow crowd that the band was on its last tour. When Sorum blogged about the incident, Weiland responded angrily via Blabbermouth, lambasting his bandmate while boasting of his own record sales (”35 million copies worldwide”) and professionalism “regardless of how many drugs I’ve ingested into my system.” Weiland voluntarily entered rehab in February, which forced the cancellation of some concert dates. Just yesterday Slash was quoted as saying the band will make a third album with or without Weiland, insisting, “We don’t know how or when but the core four guys will continue.”

Velvet Revolver’s Duff McKagan Claims Potential Led Zeppelin Opening Slot Velvet Revolver is the frontrunner to open up for Led Zeppelin if the band were to go on a full reunion tour, says VR’s Duff McKagan. “I understand that we have it, although I imagine there will be plenty of bands prepared to kick and punch us out of the way for the privilege!” said McKagan. One of those bands who will likely fight it out is the Cult, as lead singer Ian Astbury told a Cincinnati crowd last November that his band would be opening for the Zep reunion tour. Another potential wrench in the works would be Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland’s tour with a reunited Stone Temple Pilots. No Zeppelin reunion tour has been announced, as Robert Plant has scheduling commitments to his joint tour with Alison Krauss until September. [Photo: Getty]

Meanwhile, Velvet Revolver officially cancelled its Australian tour while Weiland is in rehab. Pete Townshend blogged that the Who’s 2008 plans include a potential Japanese tour, as well as planning for next year’s 40th anniversary of Tommy and a possible revisit to Quadrophenia. U2 will rerelease their 1980 debut, Boy, with bonus material this spring. The rest of the U2 catalogue will follow. Dr. Dre is seeking Death Row Records paperwork to determine how much the label owes him for back royalties on album sales. The label is currently for sale.
