Sum 41 - Underclass Hero Artist: Sum 41 Review: When they deputed six year back, Sum 41 were pretty likable and pretty ordinary - just goofy, popwise Canadians down with vintage metal, Blink-182 and dick jokes. Since then, Deryck Whibley married Avril Lavigne, and the band got famous and lost a guitarist, but Sum 41 haven't exactly taken their sound to new heights: Underclass Hero is long on openhearted tunes about broken homes, youthful alienation and such, which draw on every pop-punk device you could think of, including arena-size choruses... Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Wants to Be Surrounded by Jackasses When Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley isn’t accusing Rolling Stone of trying to have him deported, he’s looking for a few good Jackasses to hang out with. The band’s latest missive to its fans asks that they pull pranks on their friends, Punk’d or Jackass-style, for a chance to lug the Canadian rockers’ gear. The instructions: “Make a video of you pulling a prank on one of your friends. Something hilarious, embarrassing and completely unexpected.” The fan with the best video wins roundtrip ticks to Vegas and a “Roadie for a Day” gig (no pain-inducing pranks, nudity or cursing will be allowed). For a slightly less physical challenge, aspiring stars can instead build their own track on Loud.com using beats crafted by RZA for a chance to open up for the Wu-Tang Clan at Hawaii’s Rock the Bells fest. Deryck Whibley Claims He Was Nearly Deported, Lily Allen Aims at Courtney Love, R. Kelly’s Lawyers Start Their Ignitions Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley claims that an item in Rock Daily about the band’s anti-Bush track “March of the Dogs” nearly got the Canadian rocker deported (to clarify: Rolling Stone asked a Congressman for comment on the song, not for the government to remove Avril Lavigne’s hubby from the country). Lily Allen’s latest incendiary comment is directed at Courtney Love: “One night with [her] made me realize why Kurt Cobain killed himself.” R. Kelly’s sex trial is approaching a start date, as lawyers for both sides are preparing for jury selection. Husband and wife team Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony will embark on their first-ever joint tour this fall. Carlos Santana will release Ultimate Santana this fall, featuring the original version of “Game of Love” with Tina Turner on lead female vocals. Photo: Agostini/Getty

Avril Lavigne Strips Down Sound for Introspective November LPPhoto: Jennifer Rocholl Rolling Stone hits the studio with Avril Lavigne, who’s hooking up musically with husband Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 on her next disc, for a progress report in our new issue. The big news: Lavigne isn’t looking to repeat the success of 2007’s smash single “Girlfriend,” nor is she looking to maintain her status as punk-pop’s snotty princess. On the as-yet-untitled November disc, Lavigne says she’s aiming for a more introspective sound with a stripped-down rock record driven

Deryck Whibley Strikes BackLast week we wrote about Sum 41’s new song, “March of the Dogs.” In it, singer Deryck Whibley preaches anarchy and threatens our current administration (and the President’s life), which we thought was pretty punk rock. So you can imagine that we were a little disappointed when Mr. W flip-flopped about the song’s meaning publicly with the ass-covering statement that the lyrics were merely meant as a metaphor. On his Myspace blog this weekend, Whibely took issue with

Sum 41: Shut Up, Don’t SingThe snot-nosed punks of Sum 41 aren’t the first Canadian artists to pick a fight with the president — that honor belongs to Neil Young. But we’re pretty sure they’re the first to threaten the Commander In Chief’s life on a single. On Sum’s new “March of the Dogs,” frontman Deryck Whibley sings, “And now the president’s dead/ Because they blew off his head/ No more neck to be red/ I guess to heaven he fled.” While calling out the Preside
