Tegan and Sara - The Con Artist: Tegan and Sara Review: As lesbians who never reference their oppression or even their sexuality, Tegan and Sara don't have men to lash out at, put up with or gripe about. This may be why their uncommonly detailed love songs are so short on drama - a riddle worth pondering, because their keyboard-heavy, New Wave-ish music is also uncommonly catchy. When Sara changes up a chorus with a melodically climactic "But I promise this/I won't go my whole life/Telling you I don't need," or Tegan caps a verse with a hook tha... Rating: 3.5 Stars

Breaking: An HorseWho: Aussie indie-pop duo Kate Cooper and Damon Cox, whose tunes snagged them opening spots on 2008 tours by Tegan and Sara and Death Cab for Cutie. The pair — whose debut, Rearrange Beds, came out in March — met as employees at their local record store in Brisbane. “We used to close up the store and practice,” says Cooper, 29. “Damon would drop me off after work and joke, ‘We’re in Cincinnati tonight. Tomorrow we’re in Boston!’ He was just talking shit, but now it’s actually happening.” Sounds

Tegan Quin Talks Against Me! Video, Side Project With AFI’s BurganTegan and Sara’s Tegan Quin dialed up Rolling Stone’s Jenny Eliscu from Los Angeles, where she’s prepping to film her appearance in the video for Against Me!’s “Borne on the Waves of FM Radio.” Quin shared some info on how she wound up on a punk track and her side project with AFI’s Hunter Burgan: How did you first hook up with Against Me! ? “When their first record came out, I loved them, and when they put out the next record, I interviewed them for Much Music during the Warped Tour. I gushed about how much I loved them and I think they thought that I was really weird. Then they told me they were making a record with Butch Vig and I was like, ‘You should have me on the record! I’ll play guitar.’ And then a month later they called and said they had a song they wanted me to sing on: It’s about a long distance relationship, and it basically summed up everything I was trying to say on The Con.” How was it different from recording with Sara? “Well, they had been in a really amazing studio and were joking they hadn’t seen a girl in months, so they were really nice to me. I’m used to just being in a ghetto studio with Sara going, ‘Get away from me!’ But I was at Warped Tour in L.A. yesterday, and I saw the Against Me! guys, and they were all sweaty and stinky. So I hope they smell better when I see them to make the video. I ran into my friend Hunter Burgan from AFI — we have a side project together.” What’s the deal with this side project? “We met like three years ago after he e-mailed me when we were on tour with So Jealous. I sent him a lot of B-sides and things and he started redoing the instrumentation and turning it into a dance electro thing. Sometimes it sounds like Kelly Clarkson, actually. I think it could make us both really rich. Sara and I just did a tour with Cyndi Lauper, and she co-writes on every song. That’s my retirement plan, to sit and write with really cool artists. It was funny writing with Hunter, though. Like, actually being in the same room. I’ve

Coachella Day One: The Breeders, Tegan and Sara, Black Kids and More While most attendees were still smuggling their stashes past security at the front gates on Coachella’s Day One, math-rock outfit Battles had a large, vocal crowd enraptured at the Gobi tent with their pounding single “Atlas.” Battles are more concerned with complex rhythms than melody, and with a pumped festival crowd feeding off their energy, the band effortlessly locked into curious, mind-blowing grooves, turning what can come off on record as slightly joyless exercises in syncopated songwriting into something spectacular and energetic, like a dancey, mutant Rage Against the Machine. A tent away, the Black Kids were proving that they’re rapidly growing into the band their early buzz promised they would become. The Jacksonville, Florida five-piece’s Motown-garage jangle came off as robust and charming in the mid-afternoon heat. The band got the crowd moving to single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You,” a bit of poppy disco-rock that brings out the Robert Smith in frontman Reggie Young’s yelpy voice, and hit their peak on “Look at Me When I Rock With You” as Youngblood took a break from ripping out smooth-toned guitar flourishes to sling his instrument off his shoulder and boogie. Back at the Gobi tent, Dan Deacon took the stage — or rather, the floor just in front of it — and smashed away at his keyboard as walls of synth noise kept the kids jumping around to no particular rhythm, while at the Outdoor Theatre, Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrington scaled the scaffolding and threatened to jump, to the delight of his fans and dismay of security (he didn’t make the leap). Click here for photos from Day One of Coachella Meanwhile a modest (and slightly older) crowd gathered at the main stage to watch the Breeders play “some songs from Pod, some songs from Last Splash, Title TK and Mountain Battles,” as Kelley Deal put it. “I can feel it,” Kim Deal intoned as the band kicked into “Overglazed,” the triumphantly droning opening

Tegan and Sara’s Coachella Blog: Prince, The Raconteurs and “The Dog Whisperer” Tegan and Sara will be filing dispatches from Coachella. Here is their opening entry. Click here for more from Rolling Stone at Coachella. Tegan: We watched The Dog Whisperer this morning when we got up, that helped us ease into Coachella. Sara: It’s like a safe place to watch Cesar Millan talk to the dogs. I own two seasons of The Dog Whisperer on DVD, and I don’t even like dogs, I’m a cat person. T: It really trained us. Then we got up and we got on a cart, a really nice girl came and gave us a ride to our dressing room, and it’s covered in stars and butterflies and rainbows and hearts. It’s super girly, it’s hilarious. S: The people who do the trailers say they have a sweet spot for us every time we play, so they put extra effort into it. T: For each artist, they get artists to paint funny paintings. The one we got this year is two bunnies and their umbilical cords are all tangled up. Which is kind of funny because yesterday we got a fan video for the song “Floorplan” on our new record, and in it there’s a little girl character that’s supposed to be Sara and she’s wearing bunny slippers and they’re all evil at the end, so when we walked in today and it was the bunnies I was like, oh my God! Then we ate, so we took another ride in the cart. S: And that was scary for me, because Tegan and I did not go to camp, our mother was a single parent and camp was totally out of the question. We found out later because she went to Catholic boarding school, she doesn’t like communal living without parents, so she enforced a no-communal living rule when we were growing up, so we have never done camp really. Now we’re at Coachella and we’re in the catering tent and all the bands are there and I’m sweating profusely, I’m very uncomfortable, I’m afraid everyone hates us. I see people looking at me, I think maybe we know each other. I avoid eye contact. The next time we play Coachella I hope we are the size of Prince … T: We are the size of P

Smoking Section: Dave Matthews Does It for the Kids “I can’t tell you that this is not an unusual gig for me,” Dave Matthews confessed on a hot Saturday night in East Hampton, where he and Tim Reynolds were playing at the Hampton Social, an over-the-top concert series held at the posh Ross School. “Unusual in a good way.” With champagne flowing, lobsters cracked and chaise lounges in full effect, the star-studded crowd saw the duo crunch out DMB faves, fresh cuts like “Corn Bread” and, for the first time ever, “#27.” But they opened with “So Damn Lucky,” from Dave’s 2003 solo album, Some Devil — arguably the best tune Dave’s ever written. Dave agrees: “I was jumping up and down screaming, ‘This should be the single!’ But it was like shouting into a cushion.” So download “So Damn Lucky” for 99 cents, and head out to East Hampton in late August for another Ross School show, featuring Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — two tickets will run you only $6,000.* * * * Guitar phenom Kaki King’s unique slapping, finger-picking and fret-hammering style turns up on new albums by Northern State, Tegan and Sara, and the Foo Fighters. “She’s a fucking genius,” says Dave Grohl, who tapped King for “The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners,” a Foos instrumental. King is currently in the Catskills cutting her fourth album, with producer Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois), but she’s hoping for a reunion with Grohl, who wants them to cut a whole album together. She reports, “When he realized that I also played drums, he said, ‘This is ridiculous! I’m a guitarist-drummer too!’” When January recording plans fell through, she says, “It became, ‘Hey, let’s do the record in one night at my house in L.A. - it’ll be better than Guns n’ Roses!’” Faster, too.
