Conchords, Kimmel, “Idol” Grab Emmy Noms A pair of Flight of the Conchords songs will compete for an Emmy at this year’s awards ceremony for television excellence. Both “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)” and “Inner City Pressure” from the band’s self-titled HBO series were nominated in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category. The duo will have some serious competition though, as the viral hit “I’m F***ing Matt Damon,” performed by Sarah Silverman and the Bourne Identity star for Jimmy Kimmel Live, was also picked among the five finalists. Another f***ing song was also nominated in the Outstanding Picture Editing of Clip Packages for Talk, Performance, Award or Reality Competition Series. In that category, “I’m F***ing Matt Damon” and Kimmel’s response-song “I’m F***ing Ben Affleck” will curiously compete against the “David Cook Goes Home” segment from this year’s American Idol. AI was the beneficiary of many nods, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Technical Direction and Outstanding Host for Ryan Seacrest.

Metallica to Perform With Jason Newsted at Rock Hall Induction, Thanks to BlondiePhoto: Buckner/Getty Metallica will reunite with former bassist Jason Newsted when the heavy metal gods are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Cleveland on April 4th, the Pulse of the Radio reports (via Blabbermouth.) Considering the group didn’t even include Newsted’s likeness in their Guitar Hero: Metallica video game (more on that here), bringing back the bassist comes as a surprise. But according to Kirk Hammett, the decision to invite Newsted to join Metallica during the induction and performance can be credited to another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee: Blondie. “We went as a band when Black Sabbath was being inducted, and at that time Blondie was also being inducted that night,” Hammett said of the 2006 ceremony, when former Blondie members Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison practically begged Deborah Harry on television to let them perform with the rest of the band, to no avail. “And there was so many politics and so much drama that, you know, we collectively said to each other, ‘We don’t want any of that,’ because it kind of, it puts a really bad, sour note on the whole celebration itself.” Therefore, “Jason Newsted will be there, and he will be playing with us at one point,” Hammett said, ensuring that Flea, who will induct the band, won’t have to deal with any unexpected awkwardness onstage like Shirley Manson did when she presented Blondie. Plus, with Newsted, Flea and current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo all involved, we finally have sufficient bass to support Run-DMC’s performance. The Rock Hall ceremony will air on Fuse on April 4th. Until then, check out Rolling Stone’s full coverage of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jonas Brothers Talk World Tour, Fourth Album and TV ShowPhoto: West/WireImage With the Jonas Brothers on the verge of embarking on their first world tour, the trio recently held a conference call to discuss their new concert arrangement, their Monkees-inspired JONAS television show and their new June album. “The tour will be in-the-round,” Nick Jonas tells Rock Daily about the arena shows that will plant the band at center court. “We’ve always talked about wanting to do a tour like that, and this has been our first opportunity. It’s a way for us to really connect with our fans.” The tour will kick off this Sunday, March 22, with a show in the Bahamas, after which the JoBros will invade South America, before returning to North America and then heading to Europe. In our Spring Music Preview, Nick Jonas explained to Rolling Stone the origins of the title of their fourth album Lines, Vines and Trying Times, due out June 15th. “Lines are something that someone feeds you, vines are the things that get in the way, and trying times—well, that’s obvious,” Nick said. (Despite these “trying times,” top-tier JoBros ticket prices have leapt to $89.50 from $49.50 last year.) Nick hinted at his current influences, mentioning Elvis Costello six times, and Prince four, during the call. “This new album for us I wouldn’t say it’s a big jump but it definitely is a progression in our music and a growth for us. We’re very excited about this new album,” Joe Jonas said. “It feels like just a good growth in our music and it has a lot of more kind of horns in the record and a lot more strings. Also there’s more to the music rather than just a typical kind of relationship song.” For much more on the Jonas’ new album—and upcoming LPs from Dave Matthews Band, Eminem, the Flaming Lips and many more—check out our Spring Album Preview: Spring Music Preview: Inside 45 of the Year’s Biggest Albums

Eminem, Jimmy Page, Flea Among Presenters At 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame CeremonyEminem, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among the artists who will induct the 2009 class of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers at a ceremony in Cleveland on April 4. Eminem, who returns from a long hiatus with a pair of Relapse albums due out this year, will welcome rap icons Run-DMC into the Rock Hall. San Francisco metal gods Metallica will be inducted by Flea, whose own band will become Rock Hall-eligible next year. (Photos: see this year’s Rock Hall class and the artists who will honor them.) One Yardbird will induct another as Jimmy Page salutes his former band mate and fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Jeff Beck. This will be Beck’s second time as an inductee: he entered the Hall as a Yardbird in 1992; this time it’s for his solo work. (Page, himself a two-time Hall of Famer reentered as a member of Led Zeppelin in ‘95.) This year’s all-star jam already promises to be a guitar fan’s dream. Not only will Beck, Page and James Hetfield be on hand, but Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood will be there to induct R&B singer-guitarist Bobby Womack. A pair of popular late-night television musicians will also be on hand. David Letterman’s sidekick Paul Shaffer will honor songwriting great Spooner Oldham, while E Streeter and Late Night with Conan O’Brien bandleader Max Weinberg will welcome DJ Fontana into the Hall. Another E Street Band member will take the stage when bassist Garry Tallent posthumously inducts Elvis Presley’s bassist Bill Black. Finally, Smokey Robinson will take the podium to pay tribute to vocal group Little Anthony & the Imperials. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be carried live on Fuse at 9 pm on April 4, and Rolling Stone will have you covered in the days leading up to the event. Up Past Midnight With The Roots: Hanging With Jimmy Fallon’s New House BandWith due respect to Paul Shaffer and the Max Weinberg Seven, when Late Night With Jimmy Fallon premiered on March 2nd, the Roots instantly became the hottest band on late-night television. Rock Daily recently caught up with ?uestlove and the Roots as the hip-hop vets rehearsed for their full-time gig as the house band for Fallon’s show — check out the video above for shots of the group in action and ?uestlove giving us the scoop. Fallon recently told Rolling Stone that because the Roots are serving as his house band, “there’s no way anyone’s falling asleep.” The group was faced with an almost insurmountable task leading up to the debut episode: Write around 200 new songs for the program. “I’m personally saying now that I don’t want the rehearsals to stop. This is the most we’ve ever written as a group,” ?uestlove says. “I think that once we get 200 songs under our belt, I’ll lay off the three-to-five hour rehearsals.” So how did NBC convince the prolific road warriors to settle down on one stage? Incentives like spending more time with their families and rehearsals on NBC’s tab definitely helped, as did the increased pay for the decreased workload. “If you total up the seconds we appear on TV, we’re on camera for 640 to 800-something seconds a week,” ?uestlove says. “That’s the equivalent of 10 nights on the road. Our manager would not let us take this gig if it didn’t match or surpass what we get on the road. Chris Isaak’s New Show to Feature Smashing Pumpkins, Yusuf IslamPhoto: King/WireImage Singer Chris Isaak returned to television last night as his new show, The Chris Isaak Hour, made its debut on the A&E/Biography channel. Not to be confused with the situation comedy The Chris Isaak Show that was on Showtime a few years back, Isaak Hour shares a similar feel as fellow songwriter Elvis Costello’s Spectacle over on the Sundance Channel, both shows featuring guest artists both talking music and playing music. Among the guests that will hit up Isaak’s couch in the first season are the Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, Stevie Nicks, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Chicago, Michael Buble and Trisha Yearwood, who appeared on last night’s debut episode. The show will feature the guests performing around five or six songs, with Isaak collaborating on a couple of the tracks. The one major difference between Costello’s program and Isaak’s show is that Spectacle records in front of a live audience. The Smashing Pumpkins episode looks especially promising, with Corgan bringing his trademark stage banter to Isaak’s set. “Life is dark, and we know we’re going to die one day,” Corgan tells Isaak, according to a set visit by the LA Times. The band’s publicist told the paper that Corgan talks to Isaak about things “he’s never opened up about before.” Isaak also released his new album Mr. Lucky on Tuesday to coincide with his new television venture.

Bruce Springsteen on His Super Bowl Slide: Rocker Opens Up in Candid JournalPhoto: Squire/Getty More than a week after his rocking 12-minute set during halftime at this year’s Super Bowl, Bruce Springsteen took to his official Website for a play-by-play of the exciting days and moments leading up to performing in front of the largest audience of his life. From figuring out what boots to wear to practicing the now-famous “Springsteen slide” in the rain, Bruce the blogger provides an amusing account of how one prepares for the biggest gig of your life. “I’m somewhat nervous. It’s not the usual pre-show jitters, not ‘butterflies,’ it’s not wardrobe malfunction anticipation anxiety, I’m talking about five minutes to beach landing, ‘Right Stuff,’ ‘Lord Don’t Let Me Screw the Pooch in Front of 100 Million People one of the biggest television audiences since dinosaurs first screwed on earth kind of semi-terror,’ ” Springsteen writes, reminiscing about the moment before the band was called onstage. “I feel like I’ve just taken a syringe of adrenalin straight to the heart.” How Pulp Fiction! As for Springsteen’s slide into America’s living rooms, the Jersey rocker writes, “Then the knee slide. Too much adrenalin, a late drop, too much speed, here I come Mike… BOOM! And I’m onto his camera, the lens implanted into my chest with one leg off the stage.” The whole journal entry is accompanied by candid behind the scenes pictures by Danny Clinch capturing the Super Bowl rehearsals and post-performance comedown (after all that adrenalin, it had to be rough). Rolling Stone’s got photos from Springsteen’s big moment, too, and much more in our Super Bowl hub.
