Derek Trucks Q&A: Guitar Hero on Jamming With Legends and Covering DylanPhoto: Brecheisen/Wireimage When Rolling Stone’s Brian Braiker recently called up Derek Trucks to talk about his band’s latest album Already Free, the guitarist revealed he was in Atlanta rehearsing with the Allman Brothers. “We’re getting ready for the Beacon Theater run. It’s not until March but this is the only break in everyone’s schedule,” he said. “This Beacon run is a tribute to Duane Allman. They’re trying to call in all the favors and all the friends Duane played with over the years. I can’t release any of the tunes, but it should be pretty epic if it comes together the way we think it will.” Are Trucks and Co. worried that if they rehearse now they’ll be rusty by March? “You end up thinking through the sets, what songs you haven’t played in a while,” he said. “We record the rehearsals so everyone get a disc to listen to. There is a day or two in March before the Beacon shows where we rehearse, but it does feel odd to cram and then you have a month and a half to forget it.” For Trucks on the legends he’s played with (Santana, Clapton) and hasn’t yet had the privilege (B.B. King), plus which covers are blasphemy, read the full interview here: • Q&A: Derek Trucks

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Natkin/Wireimage Rock Daily remembered the Stooges legendary guitarist Ron Asheton, who passed away from a suspected heart attack at age 60. Iggy Pop paid tribute to his “best friend,” we looked back at Asheton’s legacy and his greatest riffs, revisited Asheton talking about his influences and Talk Show Flashbacked to the band’s good old days. Phish Phans and Dead Heads crowded the streets in celebration as both jam band greats announced tour dates for 2009. That’ll give Trey Anastasio ample time to play with that new compressor fans bought him. Not to be outdone, the Allman Brothers announced their annual Beacon run, and we asked readers to tell us their favorite jam bands. In what could be considered good news and bad news, Jimmy Page’s manager announced that plans for Led Zeppelin to tour with a replacement for Robert Plant have been called off. Unfortunately, Page’s manager doesn’t think the band will be touring with Robert Plant at any point either. 2009 is shaping up to be the Year of the Shady Aftermath as Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle” from Relapse and Dr. Dre’s “Could Have Been You,” maybe from Detox, leaked on the Web. Kelly Clarkson revealed her glossy new look and her re-embrace of pop with the covers of both her single “My Life Would Suck Without You” and upcoming album All I Ever Wanted.

Weekend Rock List: Jam BandsPhoto: Slevert/Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty For jam band fans, the past seven days were probably the best week since Phish played that Lemonwheel festival back in 1998: Trey Anastasio and gang, the Dead and the Allman Brothers all announced plans to tour in ‘09. To honor all of the proprietors of 30-minute songs, this week’s rock list is dedicated Jam Bands, those wonderful artists that give us a reason to quit our jobs, stop showering and caravan around in worship. If they jam, they count (thus, Sonic Youth qualifies — we’ll expect to see plenty of Disco Biscuits and moe. in the votes, too) So tell us your picks, and on Monday we’ll bust out Europe ‘72 while we count the votes. Until then, good luck in the Phish ticket lottery and check out our picks: • The Grateful Dead • The Allman Brothers • Phish • Sonic Youth • My Morning Jacket

News Ticker: R.Kelly, Widespread Panic, Achozen, RIAA R.Kelly, via his remix for Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body,” announced that his new album is titled 12 Play: Fourth Quarter and that it will be released “soon.” Widespread Panic have been recruited to headline Sunday night after Bonnaroo after the Allman Brothers canceled their performance. Achozen, a collaboration between System of a Down’s Shavo Odadjian and Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, will begin to digitally release songs from their new album next week. The band describes their music as “heavy hip-hop.” The RIAA spent $2.8 million lobbying in Washington D.C. last year. Backstage at Mountain Jam: What the Bands Were WatchingPhoto: Dino Perucci Last weekend, rock fans flocked to upstate New York’s Hunter Mountain for the annual Mountain Jam (check out our full report here), and while legends were noodling in nature, Woodstock-based WDST — which staged the fest with Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes — welcomed performers to their broadcast booth in the mountain’s ski lodge. After playing Sunday with his band BK3, Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann hit the booth and praised the working chair lifts

The Allman Brothers: Live At The BeaconThe Allman Brothers Band opened their April 7th show at New York’s Beacon Theater — the fourteenth and next-to-last night of the 2007 edition of their annual spring residency here — with a brilliant surprise: Dr. John’s acid-voodoo crawl “I Walk on Gilded Splinters.” Behind the organ, Gregg Allman growled like a man who has spent much of his life defying death and evil — which he has. In the breakdown after the chorus, guitarist Derek Trucks emulated the

Last Night at the Beacon With the Allman Brothers … Phish EditionPhoto: Scwartz/Getty As the Allman Brothers Band get more comfortable in New York’s Beacon Theatre, their home for the rest of March, more friends are stopping by each night to jam. Rolling Stone brought you a full report from night one, which featured Taj Mahal and Levon Helm. Night two brought Johnny Winter and David Hidalgo and Cesar Rojas of Los Lobos, who guested on cuts ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Bob Dylan. Last night’s show upped the ante with living legend Buddy Guy, who led the band through a pair of blues standards before being joined onstage by Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell of Phish for first set-closer “Southbound.” Fresh off their highly successful reunion shows, Anastasio and McConnell later added their own sound to “I Know You Rider” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Boz Scaggs has been confirmed to appear tonight, and Rolling Stone’s Smoking Section broke the news that Duane’s old Derek and the Dominoes bandmate Eric Clapton will be appearing on March 19th and 20th. The newest list of rumored cameos counts Sheryl Crow, Billy Gibbons, Kid Rock, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh among the possibilities. Many of the guests were chosen to help honor fallen guitarist Duane Allman, whose sudden death in 1971 left a gaping hole that was briefly filled by Warren Haynes and later by slide-guitar prodigy Derek Trucks in 2000. Gregg Allman, the band’s patriarch, has denied on multiple occasions that founding guitarist Dickey Betts will appear. Betts left the band after an ugly dispute in 2000, but rampant speculation suggests an offer may have been extended. His presence on the Beacon stage would reunite the four surviving members of the original lineup (Allman, Betts, drummer Butch Trucks and percussionist Jaimoe Johanson). The sold-out, 15-night residency runs through March 28th. Live streaming video of the entire rest of the run can be purchased at Moogis, a live-concert video service started by the band’s own Butch Trucks. The shows mark 20 years of visits to

Allman Brothers Kick Off Beacon Theatre Run With Levon Helm, Taj MahalPhoto: Splash News Last night the Allman Brothers Band kicked off a sold-out run of 15 shows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre by digging deep into their storied catalog and welcoming the first of what promises to be a steady stream of special guests (the leading rumors say Eric Clapton, Ron Wood and members of the Dead will make appearances). The Allmans opened their 176th show at the Beacon since 1989 with “Little Martha” and from there plowed through a string of sonic chestnuts, including “Midnight Rider,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Stormy Monday,” “Mountain Jam” and “Southbound.” The Allmans are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and the crowd at the Beacon, which recently underwent a $16 million renovation, was in a celebratory mood. The band was forced to cancel their 2008 run at the theater because founding member Gregg Allman was recovering from Hepatitis C. Taj Mahal played harmonica and sang with the Allman Brothers on “Leaving Trunk” and sang on “44 Blues” and “Statesboro Blues.” Levon Helm opened the second set by leading the Allmans through the Band’s “Ophelia, followed by “I Shall Be Released” and “The Weight.” Helm played his own drum kit and was joined by Levon Helm Band members Larry Campbell on guitar and vocals, Teresa Williams on vocals and Brian Mitchell on keyboards. He shared vocal duties with Williams and Warren Haynes on “I Shall Be Released while Allman and Mahal joined Helm on “The Weight,” with each taking a verse. If you got shut out on tickets, the band is offering a live Webcast of the entire run for $125; information is available at their official Website. After the Beacon run, the Allmans are scheduled to play May 16th in George, Washington, with the Dead and the Doobie Brothers; May 22 in Valley Center, California, with the Doobie Brothers; June 5-6th at the Wanee festival, Live Oak, Florida.; and May 31 at Mountain Jam, Hunter, New York. Set one: “Little Martha” “Don’t Want You No More”/”It’s Not My Cross To Bear” “I Walk On G

Barack Obama Selects the Dead for Inaugural Ball: “It Was Quite an Honor”Photo: Barnard/Getty Just a week after confirming their first tour in five years, the reunited Dead are booked to rock the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. on January 20th. “A DJ will open up — it’s a long, strange trip!,” Mickey Hart jokes to Rolling Stone (the DJ in question is celeb spinner DJ Cassidy). “[Barack Obama] picked us specifically,” he adds, “so it was quite an honor. There was a short list and we made the cut.” As for the most important question — can the band jam at the ball? — Hart is dubious: “It’s pretty tight, about an hour set. When you play these kinds of things you say, ‘How can I be of service?’ The entertainment committee makes it so that it fits into their huge schedule.” Another pitfall of political rocking: a background check. “It gave me pause when I had to get a security clearance to play a gig!” Hart says. So did they get past the security scan? “Oh, yeah, we don’t look so bad on paper. It’s not as bad as you might think.” The Dead partially reunited for a Deadheads for Obama gig in spring 2007, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann rejoined the group for a “Change Rocks” Obama fundraiser at Penn State in October. The tour that kicks off April 12th in Greensboro, North Carolina, features founding members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir as well as Hart and Kreutzmann, joined by keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes. Springsteen, Jay-Z Lead Obama Swing State DriveFrom Bruce Springsteen leading 50,000-strong crowds in chants of
"Yes we can!" to the Beastie Boys headlining a last-minute
voter-awareness arena tour to Jay-Z putting a political twist on
his full-band stage show, musicians are coming out in force for
Barack Obama as the November 4th election approaches. It's a burst
of enthusiasm that recalls 2004's Vote for Change Tour: Some
events, including a Dead/Allman Brothers show on October 13th in
State College, Pennsylvania, and a Springsteen/Billy Joel/John
Legend concert in New York on October 16th, are official Obama
fundraisers, held under the campaign's Change Rocks banner; others,
like the Beasties' tour with the nonpartisan Rock the Vote
organization, are focused on encouraging fans to show up at the
polls.
